Hello everyone, I own the new Thar Diesel HT AT.
It has 255/65 R18 Stock tyre and wheel setup. My usage is mostly on roads, Rough roads and mild off-roading which is required for my country side drives.

Switching to R16 Wheels is advisable? How will it effect the handling and ride comfort?

I plan to switch to R16 wheels combined with 255 or 265 section tyres with side wall height of 70 or 75 R16 All terrain tyres. Not sure about the availability of tyres in these sizes.

And coming to the wheels, I suppose the new Thar has a PCD of 114.3 with 5 lug not holes. So which wheels are best in this setup? Zero offset wheels would look good.

- Assuming the tyre and wheel combination is for daily use -

Avoid exceeding the weight of OEM tyre+wheel by a lot when you do your upgrade, the wear on suspension components, the vehicle`s acceleration , braking etc will suffer.

Avoid going too far from stock offset in terms of wheels, it will affect your steering response and vehicle handling - this is a rather fast Jeep, you really do not want to mess with its dynamics.

Check for brake caliper clearance when reducing the wheel size, I think R17 is perhaps the limit there for that platform as seen on Scorpio from 2014.

Lastly, cost. The current OEM set up is very competent for mixed use while offering an inexpensive tyre that you would not mind putting it through all the abuse. Those who need to take their vehicles offroad regularly uses rather cheap tyres or at best something like bridgestone dueler for offroad + highway use. The replacement costs after 30-40-50K kms is not cheap for this tyre size if going for premium brands.

Hi there,

Switching to higher profile Tyre definitely improves your ride quality but the handling suffers slightly due to the increased flex in taller sidewalls.

There is a genuine accessory from Mahindra to downsize the wheels or to upgrade from steel wheels in AX variant. It’s listed on m2all website. OEM quality and spec. As a bonus it looks quite good as well. 245/70R16 will be ideal and lot cheaper when it comes to replacement.

Hello friends.

I'm on the look out for A/T 245/75/16 tires for my upcoming Gurkha.

I have found only Appollo Apterra AT2 in that size readily avaialble.

Looking for Radar RT+ or Maxxis AT or any other recommendation?

Have not found any solid leads as most of the dealers are out of stock.

Could you guys please point me to any dealer who might have some stock left.

Thanks in advance.

How's the review of Maxxis MT? Road noise and tyre life? Would be grateful for Inputs please.

What is the factory wheel size for a 2011 3.0 D4D 4x4 MT Fortuner?

Hi BHPians,

I picked up my first jeep recently, an Invader 4x4 Di-Turbo and have few upgrades in mind, including better wheels.

I've got 16" 8J steel rims and would be going for AT tyres since the vehicle would be mostly used on roads, in estate and for light offroading (don't intend to take part in any events or competitions as of now). I also plan to do highway trips with it.

1) What would be the apt tyre size for the same? 235 or 245 section, with 70 or 75 profile?
2) Confused between Yokohama Geolander, Maxxis AT, Michelin LTX and Conti Cross Contact.

Experts, please guide.

Anyone who has used buckshot tyres on 8 J (16 inch) steel disk ? First of all is that possible? and share your experiences please.

As for A/T options, anyone have experience/ thoughts / comparisons between
Apollo Apterra AT2,
CEAT Czar,
JK Elanzo

...or anythíng else affordable, incl more M/T oriented, in more or less a Gurka/ Getaway (30-31" tall) 16" tyre?

Third option is only 5k right now with one online seller, but nobody seems to like them much.

Apollo online reviews appear to all be sponsored.

All seem to be a bit more road/ hard-track biased, whereas in truth we have to consider Manali's snow and Mizoram's slick clay in the overall picture. Good wet grip definitely useful. Treadwear less important.

We also strongly dislike punctures (like everyone) - Jeep's imported Bridgestone LT-rated have had only one (via a very sharp & hardened steel drywall screw almost certainly picked up in our own driveway) in several years of driving.

Thanks,
Eric

*and it seems the Goodyear Wanderer A/T is also there in OE size*.

Not sure any of these are great or highly reputed tyres.

All these but the Elanzo are showing up around 7-7.5k

I just posted about the Apollo Apterra AT2 here. Highly recommend them!

I use Apollo Apterra AT2 on my Gypsy. These are M+S Snow rated all-weather tyres with a rubber compound that will not harden in low temperatures (better than all-season variety). In summer driving also they provide a soft and compliant ride with all the benefits of an AT tyre. And none of the weakness of the weak Yoko sidewalls.

I love mine and intend to plonk new ones in the next SUV I get from the showroom itself whenever I buy it. Recently did a 8000km ride to Ladhak on them and they performed very well.

Bumping up this thread to check what are the delaers around Thane/ NaviMumbai reason who sells Maxxis 980 or similar AT tires with good price

Hello everyone,

Need suggestion regarding tyres for my Maruti Suzuki Gypsy 4x4 that I recently bought.

The Gypsy is running on four Accelera 235/70 R15 A/T tires. Spare wheel is MRF Wanderer A/T of same size (I know it's odd, but that's how it was when I bought it).

While the spare and 2 rear tires are in good enough condition, two front tires have uneven wear and inner edges are more.worn than outer edge, therefore these two tires need to be replaced as they cause steering to be wayward.

My budget does not allow replacing all four or five tires at once and I would hate to let go the 3 good tires, so I am thinking of replacing two front tires only. I have seen people running different brands at front and rear and want to know if that is okay. So here are the options:

1. Go over budget and buy 3 Accelera 235/70 R15 A/Ts to have all 5 similar tires.

2. Procure 2 Accelera 235/70 R15 A/Ts and keep an odd but decent conditioned spare tire.

3. Buy 2 MRF Wanderer 235/70 R15 A/Ts for front and keep Acceleras at rear. That way I'll have 3 MRFs and 2 Acceleras.

4. Buy 2 tires of entirely different brand for front.

Also, What if Acceleras or Wanderers are not available in same tread and size as existing ones?

Please help. All inputs will be appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,
GS

Best Option #2 IMHO

Worst Option #4.....sidewall roll and tyre size will likely be slightly different. This may adversely effect handling.

Go to the Tyre Temple and sacrifice an innertube to the Tyre God Tyrone so that quality foreign tyres will be allowed for sale in India en masse.

Thanks for input. Much appreciated. I myself believe tires should be uniform. Therefore, trying to budget for first option. But, I dread the scenario where I am unable to find the same brand, size and tread pattern. Apperently Acceleras are not a very popular brand and not readily available.

Every motor enthusiast in India prays daily for easy availability of imported tires at reasonable prices. May the almighty relent soon. :)

So its the year 2023 and I still have my 2011 Thar Crde in stock form. I was thinking of using 32x11.5xr15 with a new set of negative offset wheels, but im not sure how far it will affect the off-road capability like articulation and general driving dynamics. All this without any lift or regearing. If any Thar Crde owners can advise it will be much appreciated.
