Yesterday we had another OTR session. Started off from home at 5am. Travelled around 60kms at an average speed of 80kmph and started noticing vibrations! Got off and checked. Again the brand new 2 day old water pump was loose. I suspected that the pulley was loose. Called Arka from the road and took instructions on how to tighten it.

It seemed to work for another 20kms and the vibrations and noise started again and more amplified. I was very scared that the fan would damage the radiator and i shut the car. Thankfully we were only 3kms from lonavla and Danny towed me there with his Gypsy.

Went to Apollo garage at lonavla. They are authorized service center for Maruti but were happy to help. The mechanic was shocked when i said this is a 2 day old water pump and the second one in 3 months. He scratched his head and said this is not caused due to over-tightening but due to the fact that the pulley has gone bad.

He removed the assembly and sure enough, the center hole of the pulley as huge!!!

They put in a new Lucas water pump and a new pulley and it cost me half of what i had paid at Mahindra A.S.S.!

After that i drove more than 200kms and through bad terrain as well and the pump has held! The last one konked after 65kms!!!!

Shouldn't have both the two authorized and highly recommended mahindra workshops have noticed the issue with the pulley? This is gross oversight. I have kept the pulley and the two water pumps. Will take pictures and post them.

Now what do i do with the Mahindra guys? Will they refund me the part and labour?

Any contacts i can email to?

Tejas,

I got a dumb question. What is a pulley? Is it the metal wheel that holds/turns the fan belt? Are you saying that the groove that is supposed to seat the belt has worn out? As in gone deeper than normal, thus harming its functionality?

And could you share the 'expensive' details? Pulley, belt prices? Both in M&M a.$$ & MA$$?

Pulley is the round disc with the groove for the belt.

The center hole of the pulley (where it connects to the rod of the water pump which in turn powers the pump and circulates the coolant) had gone big and uneven.

Mahindra charged approx 2500 + labour + tax for only water pump. (will check exact price and get back)

Maruti charged 2200 including labour and tax for both water pump and pulley.

The belt is fine and not changed. Will post pics later too.

I do not understand why everyone want to go to Mahindra A.S.S as there is nobody who knows anything about the JEEP. All those who were working with Mahindra A.S.S during JEEP days have started their own garages when Mahindra moved to Scorpios and boleros.
In bangalore it would be approximately 1500 bucks for a OE water pump + labour.

I just did that. Gave my car to Milestone again today and have asked for a refund.

Attaching the pics of the 2 water pumps and pulley below.

@ Behram.

A Public Apology: I'm sorry for the public outburst on the forum; i know you are a busy man, but you try to understand my position. You were also to help me since a month for my electricals, obtaining parts, etc but nothing happened. Rather, say: "i can't do it" and that's fine with me; but keeping me hanging ticked me off. Sorry again.

Yeah its the pulley thats gone bad, maybe a good idea to give the jeep a complete check up. Since you do regular offroading.

Yup. Discovered a huge dent in the exhaust too. Told him to check everything as well as the engine mounts, etc.
