Restoring my Ford GPW Jeep

Dear Friends,

I had bought this Jeep in 2009 and it has served me without any trouble since then. I have participated in a few offroad competitions as well.

From the last few years, the Jeep was not maintained and I have now decided to restore it within my budget.

I will require your suggestions and support in getting this task accomplished since the car is not in original shape.

Waseem.

Yes.I have managed to source a grill (pic attached)

It is on XDP 4.90 engine and original 3 speed Gear Box. I got the engine overhauled in 2009.

Hi Waseem, is it really a Ford GPW Jeep.... What year is it?

Edit: Does it have the Go-Devil engine?

re: Restoring my Ford GPW Jeep

It's been a while since we had a good restoration thread. Please do keep this live.

Also, please try to restore it to its originality, since a lot of look-alikes out there have depreciated the value of pain, patience, skill and money involved in a proper restoration.

May this one stand out.

Since this is converted to diesel and RHD, one practical option will b to pick up a full body kit from Ganesh industries, jaipur. It comes totally finished with windshield and paint to b fitted on restored n ready under frame n mechanicals.

Its a Peugeot diesel mated with the old Willys/ Ford three speed gearbox. The first gear is not synchromesh and cannot be engaged while on the move. So it's effectively two forward driving gears ! Do please try to get the old side valve engine, which though scarce, may be availiable subject to your good luck.

The meter console appears to also be borrowed from the 540 DP. Please check availiability of original meters to fit your beauty. These meters are again rare to come by. As such jeeps were rarely owned by those in metros, our main sources from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai reply mostly in the negative. The Tier II cities had quite a few and still do, but stockists here do not keep spares for such old jeeps. Hence, the disadvantage vis-a-vis cars for owners of such 4 X 4"s .

It's a rare beauty and do try to keep it as original as possible. A friend has sold one very original Ford GPW for Rs 15 L recently.

You can check with these websites for imports :-

I am a bit puzzled how the XDP can fit under a low bonnet.

This post of mine from 2008 has many images of a well restored GPW Jeep, including under the bonnet.

I totally second above suggestion. Mukesh Jangid has perfected body for GPW with awesome detailing. and he comes highly recommended as this entire kit was developed on inputs from veterans.
Icing on the cake, you can order it pre-painted. Just complete mechanicals and chassis and fit the body.
Will save your precious time running around denter who dont even know GPW body dimensions and specifics.

PS: i have no commercial interest with Ganesh industries.

XDP is easy to fit in GPW. In fact XDP engine from 90s can be fitted in GPW while retaining LHD.
Its difficult to fit Di engine in GPW.

My dieselised GPW for reference.
