Jeep Vs Gypsy is an eternal topic.
And a pretty useless at that. They are different machines
from different eras and different parts of the word.
Can't really put them together in one scale, can we??

And as far as the classic heritage is concerned,
I agree with Headers, get a CJ3B (or older)!!
MM540/550 have zilch (so called) heritage. They maybe excellent
4X4's, but definitely not JEEP.cheers:

Gotzuk,

I agree with most of what you mentioned, but even the 550/540 belong to a very old breed of Jeep that has transformed with years similar to that of the Willy's.

Cheers !!!!!!!!

Jeep is more authentic as it arrived first on the scene, otherwise both are capable machines and equally good looking too.

Infractions: 0/2 (8)

of course they can be called jeeps - M&M manufactured jeeps under license in India for years.

Even the early MM540's of the 1980's and early 1990's vintage used to have a black and silver decal saying JEEP on the panel between the doors and the front mudguard/ wheel arches.

of course, now that the Jeep license is no longer with M&M, one cannot use the name any more, but these have pretty much come to be looked at as generically jeep type vehicles.

this is why the new productions of the Mahindra Major etc is called "Major", essentially it is the same old Jeep CJ design.

cheers

Guys, if the above information is correct, pls stop using word 'Jeep' for your 540/550 which are manufactured after 1990 . Good that atleast I have a licenced real Jeep (make 1990). I heard somebody was calling Gypsy as Jeep si, so now post 1990 all the MM540/MM550 can be called Jeep Si/Jeep Jaisi. (sorry that somebody break your hearts but pls take lightly)

Was just about to mention that. What else needed to term it as a jeep when the manufacturer stamps the same 'certification' on this!
1st it was jeep vs gypsy and now the debate has shifted to authentication of 540/550's as jeep, guessing where DK's thread will head finally

Kandisa,

I think DK should rename his thread and call it " JeepSy, JeepSi or Jeep"
or

"Dk's Jeep vs JeepSy vs JeepSi"

Cheers !!!!!!

Guys, as long as DK is involved in the posts, does it really matter. The fact that i said that the MM540 is not a "true" jeep is still true!

Agree with shankar.balan that it was made under license etc etc..but it still cant compare to a true CJ 3 series Jeep!

And why arent any CJ owners here, espcially the 2A, 2B, 3B ones!

The first jeeps were literally go anywhere and thats what we still exploit in offroad thereby learning our limitations as drivers!

The MM540 is a Cj5 / CJ 7 series vehicle which was evolved out of the basic CJ3 for different purposes.

Now assuming 540 series belongs to the jeep genre (hope that is agreeable), how 'true' is it as a jeep, is definitely debatable. But i do agree the CJ series (2A,3A,3B) has more 'classic appeal' provided they have been restored and maintained to the stock specification with their legendary engines. Also for exclusive off-road purpose yeah Cj3b rocks

Wait for some months patiently. An all-original one-of-its-kind CJ2A restoration is on. I am very fortunate to see it physically in my viscinity!
-regards,
