Hello everyone. I've been running my baby (mm550xdb) since march 2009 and completed 21000 Kms in it. Its my almost daily drive to office which is about 5-6 Kms away. recently had starting problems.. got starter checked and carbon brushes replaced . Starter now works perfectly.it ran smooth but again problem as the engine tends to overheat the temprature start crossing 100degree in my normal drive as suggested by mine mechanic replaced the head gasket but the result was same.Later replaced the engine head but the problem was same.At last planned for the engine transplant to bolero di engine and ngt gearbox started enquiring in secondhand market in mumbai [kurla]. But the rates where to high as they were demanding 1.5lac for the engine and gearbox. So i decided to take my chance and start hunting for the di engine in local garage at udupi. After lots of confusion and research i got the toyota qualis engine as mine local mechanic suggest as an silent engine. As the work as been started under the supervision of mine trusty mechanic.Toyota qualis engine mated with ba10 4wdgearbox.

Sounds like an interesting project.

DI Engines are expensive as it is the preferred engine by most commercial operators. I think the Qualis engine will be much better as your jeep will perform much better than with the DI engine. I have the DI Turbo Engine and it is okay upto 80 KMPH. Beyond that it struggles to keep momentum. I am running 4.27 diffs.

Does the qualis engine have enough clearance above the front differentials? I have been thinking about replacing my DI Turbo with something more peppy and am hunting for a XYLO D2 engine.

Sir, i have seen a qualis engine in a mahindra commander.
it was so silent that i thought it had a petrol engine.
but i dont know if it was 4wd or 2wd. call ali to know more on this jeep, as it was always coming next to his garage often.
Also why dont you try the dcm toyota T16 turbo engine, as done in the orange jeep of arjun. it does 120-140kmph also very very good offroad.

Sekaran, the project is way far ahead to re-consider another engine. Besides, the engine you mention is probably many times more expensive than scrapped Qualis engine.

Tini, the oil sump was moved back and reduced by 1/3 to avoid hitting the diff. Even the bell housing was modified to interface the BA10 to the Qualis engine.

Yesterday I got a test drive on the newly heart transplanted Jeep. It was very smooth, accelerated very strongly without any racket. Very unlike Jeeps.

Here are some photos I took last month before the engine was mounted.

The Toyota Qualis 2.4L engine

Here is the answer to the question everybody had. Doesn't the oil sump touch the differential? No, the oil sump has been moved to the back. If you look at the bottom, the oil sump used to be where the wooden block is now.

The oil sump has also been reduced in size by 1/3 on the right side.

The BA-10 bell housing has been modified. The starter position has been moved upwards to accommodate the Qualis starter.

This is how the BA10 mates with Qualis engine. It is not bolted yet, hence the gap.

Master Mechanic Prakash Poojary or better known as Prakashanna with his creation.

Toothless wonder waiting for the transplant.

Now this Jeep has AC too.

BTW the modification to bell housing will reduce its rigidity, right? (aluminum welding is very difficult & unreliable)

any alignment issues?

Nice...

Whats the going rate for a Qualis engine (the one your friend got)?

Edit - Whats the weight of the qualis engine? Any major diff over a XD3P?

I'll let him answer those questions. I don't have the answers for them.

Hi santosh i got the engine for 18k.Ya there is lot more diffrence comparing to xd3p the engine sounds like a petrol engine with lot of torque and power, now still waiting for wiring to get completed and also air filter.

No issues with the alignment and aluminum welding as the work was done by the professionals.

Looked up the Qualis engine specs and as such the bhp and torque seem fairly similar to the XD3P

"2446cc, 4-cylinder, 2-valves, SOHC, Diesel engine
Power: 75PS@4200rpm, 151Nm@2400rpm, 130kph top speed"
Source - carwale.com

Am assuming refinement is the most significant plus as compared to the XD3P? Given that the max rpms are in the vicinity of each other, even top speeds may not vary much.

Having lived with a XDP engine for a while I totally understand how much we Jeepers start valuing refinement and sound-levels in an engine

The matt finish is awesome!

Cheers,
Aditya

That does not seem to be a qualis engine! It looks like a Turbo 2L engine or a 2LT with the turbo removed. Look at the aneroid on top of the diesel injection pump!

Hmm, what other Toyota engine is this? Can you mark the aneroid in question on the image?

The aneroid is the part on top of the injection pump. It usually comes only in turbo-charged engines. If you are sure about it being a qualis engine then I am probably wrong. I will check a qualis engine to be sure.

@sashas:

Is the oil pump in the front or rear? Just wondering how you handled the oil pump when you modified the sump..
