Re: Rust In Pieces... Pics of Disintegrating Classic & Vintage Cars

During my recent visit to UP state, I came across a town called PANAGARH (literally meaning SPANNER TOWN). The town lies between Asansol & Barddhaman. Main population consists of Sikhs with workshops strewn across the town. You can see acres & acres of spares lying on both side of NH-2.
The town is closer to a main military base.

Here are my finds.

This place looks like heaven for people who're looking for ex-army stuff. Not seen any private-owned SHaktimaans yet though. But yes.. lots of ex-army jeeps now in Mumbai.

Hello Pramod,

Me and a few friends would like to take you to Panagarh. Even we are interested in visiting this place.

Please note that we have never been there and also we have no contacts there.

Please lets go on Saturday as that would be most convenient for us.

Rajdeep

Rajdeep Da,

Have sent you an SMS with Deepak Bhalla's number. He has the largest stock of army vehicles in Panagarh, you might find something useful. Best of luck!

Also, desist from sharing your mobile number on a public forum

Re: Panagarh - The scrap vehicles graveyard of Kolkata

Went to panagarh, it was quite a disappointment to say the least. The jeeps and gypsis were not priced reasonablly, they were asking for 2+ lacs for a gypsy which was partially restored and similar price for a restored jeep. Might sound tempting but beats the purpose of buying a ex army jeep gypsy. If you want to do a ground up restoration, the prices for a mg410 (not wide track) is priced at 1 lac plus. same goes with a 413 W carb, they just say a very random price. Papers would cost another 25k, plus transfer to your name would cost you another 20 odd thousand. it makes more sense to buy a used 540/gypsy from the city at a steal price than going for a money pit.

There were some petrol cj3b's and were equally well priced at 1.8 lacs onwards for a non restored example. But the day was not a disappointment, made some new friends. Met a legend.

Thank you Pramod,

That sums up our report on Panagarh.

I would like to add a special thanks to UBS sir for asking Rik Chakravarty to meet us there.

Also would like to thank Rik Chakravarty and Sayantan De who came to Panagarh from Shantiniketan and showed us around.

Re: Panagarh - The scrap vehicles graveyard of Kolkata

It is good to see an updated report on Panagarh as me and Predatorwheelz last went there quite some time back.

It is surprising that they have increased the prices. Last time we checked 410W's were going for 80K and carb 413W's for 1.2 lakhs (unrestored).

There must be some reason these guys are asking so much considering all that stock lying there and getting absorbed into planet earth.

Could someone with knowledge of scrap metal figure out how much would a gypsy in this shape go for at a scrapyard. Just want to know as it could be a bargaining tool

Re: Panagarh - The scrap vehicles graveyard of Kolkata

I got to visit Panagarh for an Inspection of the MM550's being auctioned on 26th of this month.
Thanks to Rajdeep Mitra (mitrajdeep) and his friend Jaideep without whom i would not have reached the spot in time.
Myself and Rajdeep got to inspect some good 550's and also a few NGCS models not on auction though.
After the inspection we visited the scrap market very near to the Military Base.
As some body has rightly quoted somewhere on this forum, It is not a graveyard but a Mecca for Jeep enthusiasts and re builders.

I just crossed Panagarh a few minutes ago while traveling on GT Road, the range of vehicles in the work shops is fascinating. I even saw a couple of shaktimans which were for sale. There were at least 20 Enfields and dozens off gypsys along the highway for sale. Didn't have time so couldn't stop.

Re: Panagarh - The scrap vehicles graveyard of Kolkata

To all those interested in army surplus lots of jeepM&M and gypsys have been disposed off by army and picked up by vendors in Panagarh. Early birds may get good deals.
