My quest is to cut down engine noise and have as quiet a cabin as possible. To that extent will damping of the front doors help? How easy or difficult is it to damp the the partition (firewall) between the engine bay and cabin? I could only find some inconclusive discussion on the complications of firewall damping. Is it best left to A.S.S.? Do they do it?

My car, an Aveo U-VA is pretty sturdy in build and has good in-cabin noise isolation. The only 'noise' I have a problem with, is from the HU. The HU has a removable faceplate and I think that rattles and creaks. I've tried sticking double-sided tape underneath the face plate. It worked for a few days, but now the noise is back :Frustrati.

Any suggestions?

Which make HU? Stock HU?

Most HUs have a hinging system with built-in damping. I am not sure it is creaking; that could be a noise from the HU mounting - metal rubbing against dash plastic, or something else inside the dash.

If it is *really* rattling you might not have mounted the face plate correctly. Remove the face plate, engage the hinge properly before pressing it in.

It is also likely that the sound is originating somewhere else. Inside a car, it can be really confusing trying to find the exact source of rattles & squeaks.

This is a stock Nippon HU. The hinging mechanism small clips on the right inside of the faceplate) does not seem to have any damping mechanism. Its plastic clips.

I don't think the mounting of the HU is a problem, because if I take the faceplate off and drive - no rattles at all! Without the faceplate on the HU, my car is totally slient. So it is definately the faceplate.

I'm going to try another experiment this evening. Will try some double sided tape on the top/bottom of the faceplate (when held vertical) to fit into the clearance between the top/bottom of the faceplate and the HU casing front. Worst case, I'll secure the faceplate with enough padding, permanently (I don't remove it often anyways!).

I am thinking of doing some damping in swift! Doors and boot lid is already damped,to a decent extent.
In this phase I'll be damping the floor,firewall,pillars,spare tyre wall floor and rest of boot floor.Should I damp the roof as well?
Any idea how much sq feet will be required to get the job done(ex roof)?
What is rate of Noisekill and Wuerth per sq feet?which is better of two?
If any other option(same price range) is available,do share!

i think 100 to 150 sqft will be required for all including the roof area, noise kill cost 150 sqft. 15k for damping. will first damp the boot floor,boot lid, rear door panels,and the all the plastic trip which need damping after this see if you need to damp the floor area and the roof.

KK,Boot floor and engine firewall is on top of list! I'll damp the floor as well,but not sure about roof,so I"ll skip it.I need to damp the dash from inside too,esp the glove box.If 150 sq feet is required then I will do it phases!
Is noise kill a direct application or it needs a hot gun?

Guys I need a clarification. How much does it take to add sound deadening materials to cover the entire trunk of a Lancer? iam talk just the trunk here not leaving a gap.

There is a guy in CHennai who charges 8k for using peices of Wurth covering SOME space on both side walls of the trunk some pieces near the spare wheel pit and some here and there inside the trunk some pieces on the trunk lid and 11k for a Dynamat material for just the 2 doors in the front.

harmon i don't how much will it take to damp the entire boot of lancer, but dynamat has one product for boot which contains 20 sqft. which is sufficient for the boot area. cost india dynamat 4/500rs per sqft and other material 150/- sq feet.

the front door require approx 30 sqft damping for 3 stage damping, do the calculation.

@gill its a direct apply thing but is always good to use a hot air gun

One month back I had spent 6k putting four sheets of Dynamat Xtreme on the two front doors of my Getz: two sheets on each door. Of course you can choose to install one sheet each on each door. That was in Delhi. This should give you some idea of the cost involved.
