VW owners: Now get Apple CarPlay / Android Auto on your head-unit (MIB II)

If you own a late model VW Polo / Vento / Jetta with the MIB II system, you're in luck.

Big thanks to a Team-BHP fan (who prefers to remain anonymous) for sharing the following information:

Quote:
I'm happy to inform you that VW cars sold with MIB II now have the option of getting App Connect (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link) activated at the nearest VW Service Centre. I got it enabled on my 2015 Jetta which came with MIB II.

To enable it, the service centre installed the following components:

1. App Connect package, part number 5G0054830A ₹17717.51
2. USB Port, part number 5NA057342A ₹9039.65

These are available officially at VW Service Centers (some dealership executives might not be aware of the same). I got it installed from a Mumbai VW center. VW has sent an mail to all workshops regarding the procedure to enable App Connect and Voice Commands.

You can also enable Voice Commands, but the licence for that has to be purchased separately.

Once the phone is connected to the car via the USB cable, the voice control button (on the steering wheel) can be used to interact with the voice assistants on iOS or Android.

Very nifty. So just to clarify a stupid question in my head, this costs Rs. 26,xxx to activate? Or are those just notional costs mentioned alongside it, and it's provided complimentary to MIB II car owners?

This is a great move, but where is the USB port located?

I was made aware of this by the VW dealer when I bought the Jetta last month. However, they did not have the pricing then but hinted at ₹20K++

Nothing is complimentary from VW or is it? It's to be paid for even with the new vehicles.

In the Jetta the USB goes on to one of the blank slots next to the parking assist button in front of the gear shift just before the rubberised cubby hole.

Am sure it'll be made standard sooner rather than later. But until then, even new car owners will have to pay.

Very expensive. You could buy a full featured head-unit for that money. But then, most OEM accessories are. One could order these online at a lower cost.

In response to adi_petrolhead: the USB port location remains the same.

Also, Voice Commands is a separate license which is used to interact with the default VW software, it provides basic voice functions like "Call XYZ" etc. You can check out YouTube for the same, the functions are pretty rudimentary.

Whereas, on purchase of the App Connect package, the same Voice Control button on the steering can be used to interact with voice assistants of iOS and Android.

Why is the USB port purchase necessary. There is already one. Does a new one have to be purchased and wiring installed ?
How does it work. Its a pity apple maps is not available on carplay in India.

Hey GTO, But as far as I know, only Jetta comes with MIB II infotainment system. Polo and Vento are still lacking them. However, Apple India Website lists 2016 Polo also as supported vehicle. Polo Models in Germany, UK, and Australia already have CarPlay.
Longing to see that feature on Vento/Polo.

Hi

Would be grateful with some help on this
I got the App connect activation as well as the USB port,
But apple car play doesn't work

Before I changed the USB port, I would get "USB: Device not supported" error

So got the USB part number mentioned here
Now after the USB port change, there is no error, but system doesn't recognise the iphone.

I use a iPhone 7plus
For the record I have tried all other models of iphone too from 5s to7plus
The system doesn't recognise media on the phone, images on the phone, nor does it show up on the app-connect
Also peculiarly, on the app connect main
Android auto
Apple car play
Mirror link
Shows up in the settings, for preferred connection, it shows android auto and mirror link only
Please advice

Wouldn't it be easier to rip this out and buy a pioneer HU like this? (ok, list price almost 40k) https://pioneer-india.in/buy/car-ent...s/avh-x8890bt/

For your issue - I've heard that security profiles and/or corporate VPNs installed on the phone can sometimes disrupt car play. https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0

Go after VW and demand a fix - if you pay them nearly 30k rupees ..

In my view, you shall never get the OEM perfection and integration with any third party devices. OEM would also ensure future upgrades and compatibility with any other applicable systems in the vehicle.

Re: VW owners: Now get Apple CarPlay / Android Auto on your head-unit (MIB II)

We own a 2016 Skoda Superb L&K which came with the MIB II system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto & MirrorLink. We have also had issues with it connecting to our iPhones though the OEM USB cable that came supplied with it. Sometime it charges the phone and sometimes it does not. We have a feeling that there is an issue with the USB port more than the USB cable.

Personally we find this system pretty useless as it does not have Navigation. We tried opening Google Maps hoping we could use it through MirrorLink but it doesn't work. Skoda Authorized Service Center guys are as clueless as us.

Hi
Finally succeeded in installing and using car-play in the VW jetta MIB2 unit.
Had to procure VCDS cable from Ali express.
However, now the feature is enabled and working

Re: VW owners: Now get Apple CarPlay / Android Auto on your head-unit (MIB II)

Can someone with 2017 Polo GT TSI please confirm what's the scene with Android Auto in the car? I visited the VW showroom on Hosur road in Bangalore, but the GT TSI available there was a 2015 model and just had MirrorLink.

I am considering buying a GT TSI as a daily drive, primarily due to the DSG, but don't want to be constrained for lack of MirrorLink on my phone (how many phones really have it!?) and lack of Android Auto in the head unit in the Polo.

If someone can confirm that Android Auto works/does-not-work in stock 2017 Polo GT TSI with/without having to buy VW App Connect package, that will help me negotiate better. Thanks.
