More questions for gurus - I do not plan to add a subwoofer in my car. as informed earlier I have JBL co-AX in rear and COMPO in front. is it good idea to install 4 channel amplifer to drive the front and rear speakers. will this setup improve the sound quality and overall bass from co-ax?

Opera House has a few dealers but dont know any personally. I prefer dealers who have garages large enough to keep my car over night in case the work is not complete in a day.

The HU itself puts out about 22 W RMS per channel. This may not be enough to drive the speakers loud, and if you crank up the volume it will certainly distort. Hence you need an amplifier, even if you don't blast the speakers, the sound will be much clearer.

More like 12W rms at < 0.1% THD 20-20kHz. 222W rms might be at 10% THD 1kHz.

My Pioneer 4750 user manual says "no more than 5%THD at 22W Rms, 50-15000 Hz"
My question to the Gurus: what levels of Thd are acceptable?

Good (high end) products are measured at 0.01%THD. Sometimes even less.

THD is not acceptable, it is tolerated while making power measurements. The level of tolerance is specified. In the case of tyour HU, while it is giving out 22W power, the THD is 5% (HIGH!) The pioneer too can be measured while it gives out 0.1% THD (for example, like navin says) but expect it to give out 10-12W rms at this point. No more.

If you want to go louder then go for a AMP. Like Jbl 75.4

and the fact that THD rise at the freq extremes shows why they have loped of almost an octave in the bass and the last 1/3rd octave in the HF.

Let me simplify what Navin said (Oh nostalgia)

Instead of measuring that at 20Hz - 20Khz (the way it's supposed to be measured), the power has been measured from 50Hz to 15Khz. Because the distortion would be much higher than 5% at those frequencies. So very conveniently, the measurement has been done in the middle band. And that too shows 5% THD lol.

This is a clear example of a marketing con job.
