Do check the maximum size permitted. I remember reading some specs (very initial USB HUs) that they support USB drives only up to a max capacity.

Couldn't find it anywhere in the manual. It has some other thing - ITS playlists, but I think that is more for multi-cd changers, rather than mp3s.

Which HU do you use playlists with Abhibh?

Also, I didn't realize that random may not work with playlists! That would be a bummer!

More and more it looks like my options are to create different folders instead of playlists, and to place any common mp3s in both folders. (Then just play it on Random and Folder Repeat).

Hey dont worry about random. Winamp has an option to randomize the playlist. So instead of playing the tracks in the play list at random, you can randomize the playlist.

In the winamp playlist window choose Misc->sort and then Randomize list. Now your playlist is re-arranged in a random order. It's not the perfect random since each time it'll play in the same "Random" order but it's a small work around so that you dont hear music from the same film one after the other. But the problem is to get the playlist to play first.

the 5050 should have the smae capacity as the 6050. BTW make sure your USB hard disk needs less than 0.5A. Some hard disks needs more and wont work.

I enquired the price of pioneer 4050 with USB pen drive attachment facility in a place in Alwarpet Chennai. The price they are quoting is 9990/- and then 20 % discount on that , effectively 8000/- . for a set of pioneer 4 inch 1300/- and 1850/- for a set of pioneer 6 inch.

Is this normal price?

Corsair over trancend any day, however i would suggest to invest a bit more and get 40GB external 2.5" drive w/ USB casing with at least 7200 RPMs for faster access.

Do remember to take the "0.5A to be used" only in consideration, as suggested by navin.

The price quoted for the 4050 seems way too high. It should be around 6K. For that price you can get a higher model and for about 9K - pioneer 7950 or 6050.

Unless budget is really a constraint here, AVOID pioneer and sony speakers. If possible, look at JBL GT5 series. The JBL set may cost you around 2.5K more. They are good VFM

I dont think that External hard disks would be good in a car environment with bumps on road and high temperatures during parking. Also they take more time to access.

If you badly want to use a hard disk, go for a laptop disk with USB casing as it might be better designed for mobility, both in terms of size and robustness. And do keep it on a sponge cushion or something to avoid vibrations getting to it.

But USB flash drives are the way to go

Bought a Corsair 8GB FlashVoyager pen drive for 1,850. Works well, and one can definitely see that read speeds are much better than average!! My HU hardly has a pause while changing tracks!

rrnsss, there are plenty of Pioneer HU threads already open. No need to hijack my thread.

Mods, please delete / move the above two posts.

The Transcend V10 is even cheaper - Rs. 1,500 for 8GB. But Corsair has fantastic read speeds, which is why I went for it. And no regrets either - it's really fast even with a car HU!

Playlists don't work with the 6050 :( Have to resort to using different folders.

The transcend prices are rising since the dealers have noticed that its too much VFM.
