Exactly. Following this method from ever since I can remember. Also helps in having a large number of personal "compilations" on hand. Unfortunately had huge caselogic FULL of these stolen :'(

Why need pointer when there is also no need for that. Copy the songs in the Pendrive in such a way that they are sorted by the folder in that way. Simple

Point taken.. Don't want to start an argument about that. The original poster wasn't asking what a playlist is though, he was just assuming that I was being vague about the term. Anyway, I see that he was only being helpful, and my apologies, amplyfryed, for being rude.

Exactly. Play list is for ipod where you have 2000-3000 songs at hand. For pendrive of 2 gb Folder option is the best one.

I have a pen drive of 8GB!!!, and a girlfriend who hates most of my music.

This is an effort to have three playlists:

P1:
All tracks on the pendrive.
P2: Few tracks out of these that appeal to women (sting, collective soul etc.)
P3: Few tracks that appeal to old folks (classical Indian stuff).

Simplistically, P1 = Metal + P2 + P3

So anyway my solution for the time being is three folders:
F1 = P1
F2 = P2
F3 = P3
which means that songs in F2 and F3 get repeated in F1 - not a big deal, until I start running out of space!! Then it makes no sense to duplicate tracks (and tracks at 320kbps are around 11MB each).

O computer-master-ji, "Pointers to pointers" (**p in plain c) is exactly what @vebmetal is wants. A "Playlist" is the script equivalent of the same.

Unfortunately, the directory system in HUs follow DOS conventions and not Unix conventions. Otherwise he could have had a directory for his girlfriend with only links instead of actual files, another for his parents, so on and so forth. The actual files could be kept in one place.

Tried playlists ... didnt work. Here the hierarchy:

MUSIC
---ENGLISH
---HINDI
===MANY ALBUMS AS FOLDERS
---TAMIL
---OTHER
---DATA
---Test.m3u

All the above drives under the single folder MUSIC. Chose list, but the HU didnt find any playlist in the music folder.

Playlist was the Winamp default file; edited to remove all Drive: [H: in my case]

So according to the manuals (under Additional Information), the 7950 supports .m3u playlists but its successor the 6050 does not!!! How weird!!

(btw the 7950's manual highly recommends you use Windows Media Player 10 to make the playlist. MAybe if I am bored I will give it a try with the 6050UB as well.)

USB Compliant Headunit (Mass Storage Class)

Whilst I sent you this msg, I did a bit of research on the internet. Wow man this thing is flourishing. Lots of people have turned their cars into audio heavens. A friend of mine has used his old notebook (with a faulty screen) as his control panel. There is no monitor, just the bottom bit of the laptop, with keyboard, touch pad and trackpoint. He got it fitted in a motorised tray under the rack slot in his range rover. He has a 1.8 inch mobile drive which consumes less than 500mA of power with less spins. Its 250gb and comes in a shockproof rubber enclosure.

I got a deal on this unit- Pioneer DEH-P4000UB and it is USB MSC (Mass Storage Class) compliant.

USB audio playerlUSB memory
compatibility
• USB version: 2.0,1.1 and 1.0
• USB data transfer rate: full speed
• USB Class: MSC (Mass Storage Class) device
• Protocol: bulk
• Minimum amount of memory: 250 MB
• Maximum amount of memory: 250 GB
• File system: FAT32 and FAT16
• Su pply cu rrent: 500 mA

There is information on folder management as well. Here is a link to the manual here for the benefit of other bhpians who might be interested.

Cheers !!

Can you explain what exactly you mean by folder management? Is it something that gives you playlist like functionality?
