The R&D facility is at Vellivoyalchavadi - in the general vicinity of the Ennore Plant. And the vehicle testing group is probably based out there.

It is AL's ICV vehicle which is going to hit Eicher & Tata like a cyclone..
And yeah its AVIA cabin as revealed in AutoExpo..
Of course the registration is Chennai as AL R&D is in Chennai where they make these prototypes..

Any idea what engine AL plans to fit in the Avia? In Europe it comes with Cummins B 5.9 of which the primary user in India is Tata.

This will have regular engines but differenct power train, IMO.
Definitely it will not come with Cummins.
In fact for rest of Europe market like CIS and Middle east, Avia will be available with AL aggregates.

It comes with H series 4 cylinder 120 hp engines. And as Ashley said, with a different power train than what is used in the ecomets.

I think AL is planning to have a 9T, 11T & a 15T for this model. I wonder when the official launch of this model would be though!

AL's track record has not been great in the LCV and ICV segments. Based on lessons learnt from the past one can expect that the AVIA cab based ICV with the tried & tested Ashok Leyland (Hino) engines will meet market expectations.

@ Powerhouse - Would you mind sharing why you believe this vehicle will have a 'cyclone' effect on the competitive landscape?

The Cargo. And I dont think it was just one model - the entire range on offer failed to set the sales chart on fire. I recall this was in the late 80's or early 90's.

And since that time AL has not really been able to make a dent in the LCV segment while TML, Eicher and Swaraj have managed to establish themselves pretty well. The recent launch of the Dost has been an exception.

But lets leave the past aside and address a more relevant question,

Im sure many of us on this forum are keen to understand what competitive advantage the new ICV range offers that will make lure potential TML & Eicher customers towards the offering from AL. Perhaps you can throw some light.

Cargo range was launched in early 1990s. In the 1980s, AL had launched the CHITAL range which used 4 cylinder version of Hino engine. It too was a failure.

You didn't mention Allwyn Nissan and DCM Toyota which also failed.

Re: Scoop : Ashok Leyland Avia D120 spotted near Vagamon (South India)

Thanks directinjection - just that I did want come across as being confrontational by providing more than the one example that Power House wanted - although im keen to see what AL will do differently this time

You are right about DCM toyota falling by the wayside...but in spirit the Allwny Nissan lives on as the Mahindra Loadking - which sells in reasonably respectable volumes, if im not mistaken.

Re: Scoop : Ashok Leyland Avia D120 spotted near Vagamon (South India)

Zed & directinjection : fykip..I specifically asked whether u can name 1 LCV coz i know perfectly well that the Dost is the first attempt by AL at LCV.. The Cargo and Chital you guys mentioned are all ICV's.. And for how it is going to be a cyclone effect, Action speaks louder than Words..wait and see.. As for the Dost, it has a marketshare of 22% in the 4 states it has been released in less than 1 year.. That figure itself speaks volumes..

And unlike our earlier attempts, the new ICV's are not just another attempt.. AL has done lot of homework and it has taken its own time.. Yeah the core is the same H 120hp.. But the core doesnt mean the whole vehicle..

I should believe that AL has done some extensive load testing as I see the carriage broken and mended mid-way! Or is it just me?
