Air India Kumbo Aircraft deal

Its official and public. Air India's Jumbo Aircraft order has been made public. I am posting it here since I thought this is the most relevant thread. ( Admins can consider a new thread related to Air India Jumbo order). Here is the exact break-up variant wise from each manufacturer.

From Airbus
140 A320Neo
70 A321Neo
34 A350-1000
6 A350-900

From Boeing
190 737Max
20 787-9
10 777x

Total order value of about $80 billion (₹6.4 lakh crore) for purchase of 400 narrow body and 70 wide body aircraft, with options for another 70 aircraft (50 737Max and 20 787s). Deal includes aircraft's engine order of about 800 nos from Rolls Royce, CFM International and GE Aerospace. While the Rolls Royce engines will power the Airbus A350s, GE Aerospace will power 787s/777s and the CFM engines will power all the Single aisle aircraft.

What is more surprising is that the presidents of USA, France and England announced made this order public before Tata Sons Chairman or Air India CEO did. Such important is this aircraft order for their economy.

Alliance Air is still government owned. It wasn't a part of the Air India deal.

Before Air India was sold to the Tatas, Alliance Air was a subsidiary of Air India. Alliance Air was not a part of the sale and the airline is currently owned by the Government. Alliance Air was to be put on sale too separately. Alliance Air continues to use Air India's Centaur logo on their aircraft.

Speaking of Alliance Air, I was surprised to know they now operate to Keshod airport from Mumbai. Keshod was a small airport that served smaller towns/cities like Junagadh, Veraval etc in Saurashtra. The airport was not been used by any major airline since 2001, when Jet Airways was the last airline to fly into Keshod.

An article in money control about the engine options across the orders. Seems good for GE and Rolls Royce

I flew by Alliance Air to Hyderabad a few times recently and the service and aircraft (ATR 72 only) were decent. And they gave a nice discount for senior citizen tickets. I thought they are still part of Air India because of the discount as well as the logo.

Re: Tata-owned Air India confirms purchase of 500 aircraft

I hope they come up with a Retro livery for some for the new planes and also add a tagline acknowledging JRD Tata with his sketch and maybe signature. Back in the days during the relative infancy of commercial aviation, AI was a pioneering/ landmark airline of sorts. I felt some of that spirit in this news , because of the deal size and the overall impact on the industry ecosystem. Kudos and all the very best!

Tata-owned Air India confirms purchase of 500 aircraft-565b6041ba464e07bd8316d2ce773001.jpeg

The first aircraft’s to arrive will be 25 brand-new Boeing B737-800s and six Airbus A350-900s in the second half of 2023, with deliveries really ramping up in 2025 and beyond. Of the total order, about 450 aircraft are single-aisle aircraft from the Airbus 320 family and Boeing 737 MAX, which will fly domestic and short-haul international flights. The rest 90 planes are dual-aisle planes which will fly to Europe and the Americas.

737-800s? They are supposed to be 737 MAX 8s and as per the official Boeing release, some of the MAXs will be 737 MAX 10s.

And there are reports that we will see them sooner, by 2023 itself as there are 6 undelivered -900 aricrafts which were originally allocated to Aeroflot, before sanctions prevented further deliveries.

"Quantity has a quality all its own", something attributed to Stalin.

India with its population and market opportunities is bullying through things
Be it in doing whatever it wants to whoever disagrees, doing things just for the heck of it, like in cricket. We have heads of state coming on to cheer our orders.

Feel happy and not so much at the same time. We are doing this even with miniscule percentage of the people enjoying the fruits. Imagine what if most of our population are lifted out of the wretched, contemptible conditions

Re: Tata-owned Air India confirms purchase of 500 aircraft

A noob question for the ones who are well versed with the industry - What does Air India and the sister concerns plan to do with so many aircraft? Indigo which is dominating the industry and with a high reputation is doing with 300 or so narrow body aircraft. What would AI do with 400 Narrow body aircraft? Do they expect market to grow and them to soar beyond 6E?

Even the bigger aircraft numbers surprise me when AI isn't an international favorite either.
