Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

Saw this in the RD parade today and was amused to see volvo puller with the DRDO. What could have made DRDO choose volvo, rather than our favourite Tatras, Hippos and Tatas? The Tatras have been carrying heavier missiles for years and agni 4 is nothing new, but nice to see a lovely volvo. But this volvo doesnt seem like a mean military machine. (driver is wearing seat belts )

Fantastic picture. Thanks for sharing. Love the way the rock is lit up with the sea in the foreground.

The A4 is the heaviest missile in the inventory at this time. Also this is a Rail/Road mobile launch system. The overall weight of this us upwards of 60T including the hydraulics. The Volvo puller is old and has been used in the past as well .The Tatra can pull these loads however as a Truck Trailer arrangement vs a tractor trailer arrangement. Recently the DRDO has ordered a few Prima's for the same. Also the Volvo is less noisier compared to say a Hippo. In a real situation a volvo/prima/ new AL will be able to pull such loads faster and move around better than the older workhorses.

Can some one explain why such high camber angle was provided on the wheels of this vehicle? (Since there is no overloading in this case, there is no possibility that the wheels become straight when the vehicle is loaded)

Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

I request all of you to please hide/blurr the Tactical Numbers in the pics that have been clicked by you.
(Tac Nos-those three digit/two digit/four digit numbers which you see on the front and rear of the vehicles in bold white over a black background)
I also request you to not mention the location where the vehicle was spotted or where the pic was clicked.
Moderators please enforce this( and forgive me for acting like a Mod).

When defence websites (including official ones) do not blur those numbers, I don't see any need for doing so here. It is not as if it poses a security threat.

It seems INS Viraat and here air wing are not taking part in these exercises :-(.
Its good to see Indian Navy officers observing carrier ops so closely, it will certainly help when INS Vikramaditya gets commissioned in the Navy with her air wing of MiG-29K/KUBs.

Re: The Indian Armed Forces...Army/Navy/Airforce Vehicle Thread

India's largest warship and aircraft carrier - the INS Vikramaditya (erstwhile Admiral Gorshkov) has arrived at her home port Karwar, Karnataka after an uninterrupted 6-month 8500 nautical mile journey from Severodvinsk, Northern Russia.

Some snaps from the Indian Navy:

And Google maps clearly shows her being docked at one of shipyards in Severodvinsk, Russia:

Google Map co-ordinates - 64.582647, 39.809386

Quote:
Upon its arrival in India the carrier will be refitted with additional systems, including air defense missiles and electronic systems which could not be installed in Russia.

According to Sevmash, there are some 180 Russian specialists on board the warship who are tasked with monitoring the vessel’s overall performance and the on-site training of the Indian crew, as well as providing assistance in fixing any possible glitches in the operation of the ship’s systems, including air conditioning. Part of the Russian personnel will stay on the Vikramaditya after its arrival in India in order to provide maintenance services under a one-year warranty agreement, followed by a servicing contract for a period of up to 40 years, the Sevmash said.

Thanks for sharing the pics.
One correction though, Vikramadithya was commissioned on Nov second week I guess, so that means it took a 6 week journey and not a 6 month one.

Indeed it is 6 weeks. I am not sure how/why months crept in there!

Did some digging and came across a whole lot of snaps and super-cool information from a thread in Militaryphotos.net forums:
