I had mentioned earlier that I have pictures of Police Jeeps and Trucks having an attachment for use on rails. The difference here is that this attachment was fixed permanently, and the vehicle could still be used on roads.
In this picture on the back they mention that this picture was taken at some exhibition in Nashik.
The Jeep is LHD, and they have even fitted a "cow-catcher" in the front. That is to knock off straying animals without comming under the wheels.

Cheers harit

There were reports of a 200 wheeler truck spotted in Belgaum quite a while back. It used to travel only in the night. Belgaumites, any idea about this ?

Looks like a simple mechanism, with a belt drive connected to the front axle/shaft and probably a similar attachment at the rear.

It probably folds up above the front chassis cross member infront of the grille when on road.

Simple but effective.

Now why would Police Jeeps need to get on rails?

How is this relevant to the thread?

I have seen the normal TATA 1210 trucks running on rails in Kerala, when the parallel track was on construction in south kerala several years back.

Here is what i caught on my way back from college, thank god my phone was in my hand.
It was flying across the tracks at an impressive 30-50 kmph(thats what i think because it was difficult to judge speed because of the moving train)

A similar image as the one posted above was also featured in "Auto India"'s back page sometime in 1997.

IMHO it was the same truck, same colour, albeit clicked from the front.

The 'autocar mag' picture..

What is this? (Truck on rails in Belgaum)-new_transport-small.jpg

They've attached two trucks back to back to allow the contraption to move forward and backward without having to turn the truck around, which would need the use of a 'Turnstile' found in some railway stations to turn the engine around.

That reminds me, last week I had gone to Kochi SEZ site.
And there were "rail tracks".

After few minutes I saw our very own TATA trucks on the rails there ...

Never knew anything of this type could ever be done.
A good practical option to the locomotive.

Sorry for digging an old thread. The flag on the truck was officially adopted by INC in 1931. The Belgaon (the then Belgaum) congress meeting was held under the presidency of Mahatma in 1924. So this truck happened post 1931 before 22nd July 1947 (when the current flag was adopted to adorn the masts of independant india from 15th Aug). I'll dig more in to this. Now what major thing could have happened in and around Belgaon in those 16 years?

My best bet would be the civil disobedience movement during 1932. Belgaum had loads of people detained/ arrested which included women. Also, this was the flag hoisted on 26th Jan 1930 when they proclaimed poorna swaraj. So could be then as well.

I have seen a few of them doing duty near Diva junction when a few new lines were being laid down. This was many years back.

This photo was taken in Sakleshpur almost 4-5 years back . This was used by the engineers to reach the tracks which were under renovation from narrow gauge to Broad guage
