Interestingly they are having shackles in front instead of rubber ended leaf.

MH RTC should move on with their body design. This bus looks like a new bus rolled out in then90's. Wonder if there is a reason for sticking with the same design all these years.

The single front windshield makes the front look like a cold storage truck from the south west coast.

I've had this doubt for years, but no one seems to have the answer to this, hopefully you guys can help. Why do all the KPN buses carry the 'Sharvesh' decal? Is he owner of KPN or something?

"Volvos Not Suitable For Indian Roads"

Quote:

Briefing the media here on Wednesday, CID additional director-general T Krishna Prasad said that after conducting the probe, investigators concluded that besides negligence of the bus driver and faulty geometry of the road, there were several loopholes in the design of the Volvo bus, which led to the mishap on the fateful day.

Since 2005, five major accidents took place involving Volvo buses in various parts of the country and 43 persons died and 53 suffered injuries, the CID official said.

"Volvo buses plying in India have a battery below the driver's seat and behind it the main 300-litre diesel tank is located," the CID chief said.

When the bus had hit a culvert, a rod on its railing first pierced the fuel tank and then the bus body by disturbing the flooring of the bus, made of wood. Due to the impact of the bus hitting the culvert, the sparks emitted from the battery immediately ignited the already punctured 300-litre diesel tank. The bus was also supported by two more auxiliary tanks which were of 150-litre capacity each.

"The first impact of any accident involving Volvo will be on the battery, which is near the fuel tank made of plastic. So, the sparks from the battery can easily trigger a fire mishap in a Volvo bus. Unlike other buses, the floor of the Volvo is made of wood instead of metal. We will send the report to the Union government informing that design of the Volvo bus used in India is not road worthy,'' Krishna Prasad said adding that Volvo's bus design varies from country to country.

Is this particular design of the Volvo followed elsewhere too? Or is it only in India?

Also, isn't having a different design for different countries a more expensive affair for Volvo?

Why does it look rear-heavy? And is this a new bus? Not seeing many new AL 12Ms of late.

This one was carrying pilgrims and was on a 'Contract Carriage' kind of trip. I noticed the heavy rear only after you pointed out, I'm guessing it must be filled with food for 40 people, the groups like to cook and carry their own food usually

This was a bare bones rendition of the 12M Bus. Ashok Leyland conceptualised the 12M for Interstate travel on expressways, it already had the 210 and 222 wheelbase Vikings to cater to the 'Contract Carriage' segment, however, this Bus Owner bought the 12M and used the additional length to fit in as many seats as possible, the recline angle of the seats and the calf support was tampered with to give space to all rows. This chassis in some engine configurations has engine driven AC, retarder and air-suspension options, however this was a plain-Jane non AC non air-suspension version. Did not look too closely if it had weveller suspension or did not ask the crew if it had a retarder

After sometime, you get fed up of talking to the crew, these guys know a lot less than what many on the forum know about their vehicles. 9 out of 10 times if you would speak to the crew you would get replies like the Bus costs 50 lakhs, top speed in 130kmph and mileage is 4 to 5, that it has Japan engine etc.

Probably.

The 12M is offered in 160bhp (inline FIP), 183bhp (EDC) and 225hp (CRS) engine options. All of them have Weveller suspension as standard, and can be ordered with factory-fitted Air Suspension (rear only, or F&R). The 225hp version offers retarders as an option, and has rear air suspension as standard. AFAIK.

That's true. They don't get to see what goes under the body.

Traveled in RA100, B7R Volvo of KeSRTC today from TVM to EKM. The odo reading at beginning of trip was 998365KMs. The bus really shows the age and rattles at some windows. Seems the KMs run did not show in performance. Covered the 210KMs through the busy two lane highway in about 5 hours including a 15 minute tea break.

Happened to see the pics of the Luxura in an FB page:

It is from Sri Lanka. Any idea how old this bus is? Is AL planning to revive this FBV?

After a very long wait, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation would finally get to lay their hands on Volvo 9400XL B9R coaches:

A total of 10 buses are made ready, and they will reach the KSRTC's HQ in Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow. From what I heard, all the ten buses will be used to connect various places in Kerala with Bangalore.

It's heartening to see that all seats are provided with Seat-belts. Among the buses I've traveled in, the only other bus that had seat-belts for every seat, was an ABT Leyland AC semi-sleeper.
