Re: Railway Pics

Dont know where else to post it. Quick thinking by elderly couple prevented train derailment and saved many lives at Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu .

Re: Railway Pics

With two more VB's introduced, the number of VB's are four now crossing the Baiyapanahalli station out of which 3 crosses the station in a span of 30-45 minutes in the afternoon. The reason I mention Baiyapanahalli station is because two trains terminate at SMVT for now and two carry on towards Bangalore Cantonment and City stations. And while departing, the Kalburgi and Coimbatore trains cut off soon after Baiyapanahalli station.
This afternoon I ]managed to capture some action at SMVT and Baiyapanahalli.

This first picture probably dates back 20 years or so and is the same location at which the white VB is coming down the Salem ramp. Picture was taken by fellow member SandeepMohan when we used to trainspot back then.

The white VB is the pairing rake to Kalburgi since the turn around time is less for cleaning. The orange one just arrived.

Re: Railway Pics

I have been a old fan of Indian Railways. Back in college days, I used to travel by Poorva Express in sleeper class from Dhanbad to New Delhi. As I started working, I upgraded to Howrah Rajdhani Express. With life getting busier, I had to fly in order to save time.

But in year 2023, I got chance of doing multiple train trips including Archana Express, Bangalore Rajdhani, Bhopal Shatabadi, Rampur Agra Express and Vande Bharat Express. It was pleasant surprised to see the level of improvement in Railways. Nonetheless, had to lodge online complain twice with respect to faulty charging point and inadequate linen and was happy to see the issues addressed quickly once in Jhelum Express and Goa Express respectively between Agra to Pune.

I will be travelling again in Howrah Pune Duronto Express on 25th April. A train journey now affords me time to relax and unwind myself. Nostalgic memories have been revived by this thread.

Attaching a pic of Gaya Howrah Express, which I clicked yesterday.

.
WAG12’s go all over mainly because of their long maintenance intervals as well as the remote diagnostics capability from the home shed.

Not a picture, but a lovely video of first train crossing the world's highest railways bridge in the yet to be inaugurated J&K sector of northern railways. Skip to 1:01 to get the perspective.

Once you watch the video, then only one can fathom the engineering marvel the Chenab bridge is. That train looks so tiny on that massive bridge!

Brave loco pilots risking their lives to fix an air leak on a train stranded on a bridge. Leak is fixed around 1:30 and the pilots make their way back to the cabin!

Re: Railway Pics

Continuing with the Chenab bridge, a speed trial was conducted today at 100kmph. Operational clearance would be for 75kmph.

Let me be harsh here. It is bravado of idiots. How can you expect loco pilots who take such risks be responsible for safety of hundreds of their passengers? How can an organization that allows its employees do such things be responsible for safety of millions of passengers who use their services? No wonder Indian Railways has so many accidents.

I’m surprised at your comments!

Would you say the same for an airline pilot if he takes up some repair work himself?

As the term says, a loco pilot is a person responsible for operating, driving and maintaining the train, and ensuring safety of its passengers, much like an airline pilot.

If the locomotive has broken down on a bridge, what do you expect the loco pilot to do? Just sit there waiting for maintenance guys to arrive?

Look the surroundings - a naked bridge and a train full of people, many of whom will be impatient and would do stupid things risking their and other passengers life (let your imagination run wild).

Loco pilots are trained to carry on some repair work themselves. They have to often operate in tough conditions and terrains, while being responsible for thousands of passengers. Just because their job is not glamorous as airline pilots doesn’t mean that they are anything less.

Yes, that's exactly what he should be doing. Wait for people with right safety equipment and training to come. Forget the passengers, he has a duty to go alive to his family who are dependent on him.

There are many organizations in this world where you will be fired for putting your own life at risk at work. The simple reason is if you are not smart enough to take care of your own safety, you might put your coworkers also at risk due to your bad decisions.
