Heat can definitely be a concern in the motorcycle scenario, with direct sunlight pounding on the navigation phone, but it will still be usable on the motorcycle, for at least 9 months in a year.

In the Air Condioned Car, heat should be a non issue, as far as my limited testing goes. If you are chilling at 20~25 degrees in the car, why would your tab have any problems, especially when it's location too, is just above the AC vents?

Will keep it further updated.

Cheers...

Re: DIY: Get Android Auto in any Car/Bike for Free (or under 10k)

I definitely appreciate the technical success in installing a tab as the display unit.

But, just last week I saw a white board car, without any other occupant except the driver, with a similar (but smaller) screen playing a movie while driving, near Vega City mall in Bangalore. I was just hoping that he doesn't get distracted, causing trouble for himself and fellow people on the road.

So I am just wondering if this tab is hard-restricted to playing only the Android Auto? Or if required, can all other features of the tab be unleashed - like playing Youtube etc.? I just wish that it doesn't cause any additional distraction!

Or you could just remove the Tab when you hand it to your solo/stupid driver . And I think there is a setting in the Headunit Reloaded app where it can be made to directly switch to the app on powering on or it could be programmed to be done in Bixby routines or modes.

Anyways there is NO solution for stupidity, if a person is hell bent on doing it.

Re: DIY: Get Android Auto in any Car/Bike for Free (or under 10k)

This setup looks wonderful.

Do you or anyone else have any thoughts on what can I do for my Honda City V - 2012. It doesn't have Bluetooth connectivity however does have steering mounted audio controls and has AUX/USB. What I have been doing till now is connecting the Bluetooth via an adapter plugged into the AUX port. However, whenever I need to change tracks or take calls, I can't use the Steering mounted controls. I need to pick my phone up every time I want to do something.

I know I can upgrade the head unit but I don't want to fiddle too much on a 12 yr old car.

Any suggestions would be really helpful.

I am in the exact same boat. I currently use a Bluetooth adapter, but that doesn't help me with navigation. I was strongly considering replacing the head unit, but the 10k ones lag after some time, and others are too expensive.

Looks integrated, but high risk of this entire contraption hurtling towards you/passenger in the event of emergency braking.

I don't know the solution to the steering controls for your vehicle, BUT, if your car has Aux Input, you could always connect it directly to the Headphone Jack of the Tab by a high quality 3.5mm cable, and at least enjoy full fidelity music on it, without using the local bluetooth adapter, which are notorious for poor music output. Maybe your car could even controls the Aux In port through your steering wheel controls? Try it.

What about Idols etc. placed on the dashboard in the event of a crash, that some manufacturers now provide even dedicated space for, nowadays? Or your phone lying on the dashboard cubby holes? Or any such vast permutations and combinations that could occur in real life?

The mount is sturdy enough for any hard braking maneuvers but then as I said earlier, not every possible scenario, can have a solution!

CORRECTION : You need to attach the 3.5mm cable from the Aux in to your main phone and not the Tab, as the sound is being output from the main phone, either through Bluetooth as in my case scenario or the headphone jack/speakers of your main phone. I think your steering controls should also work.

Re: DIY: Get Android Auto in any Car/Bike for Free (or under 10k)

I tried a similar thing with a bit old Google Nexus tablet a few years back on my Figo. There was no Android Auto support, but I was able to stream music from the tablet to car speakers through Bluetooth. Everything was working fine until I kept it in the sun for a full day. The tablet totally bulged, and the screen and battery came apart. I was lucky that I avoided a fire hazard on that day

If that is your usage scenario, then right. But if you want to use Android Auto, why would you need 2 sims operating concurrently in one car? One on your main phone and one on your navigation device (tab or other phone), other than causing battery drain for no rhyme and reason. WiFi Hotspot works perfectly and with better speeds than most sim based data connections, with minimum battery drain.

Cheers...

More or less you have understood me correctly. Not exactly a standalone device altogether.

My concern is, i would rather not have my phone in the picture at all. Like you mentioned, i think there is a way to turn your old tab or phone into a standalone android auto. (something to do with the developer options and booting directly into android auto. Very vague, but i remember watching a video explaining the process. It pretty much makes normal usage of the device (that is normal media consumption at home, playing games etc non existent and turns the phone/tab into a portable android auto. Couple that with cellular data and you have pretty much a plug and play situation without having to use your main phone at all. The device also maintains its basic features like bluetooth and whatnot, so it can be wirelessly connected to the speakers of the car (if the car has the bluetooth function)

All in all, a true, wireless, portable android auto

There is Android Auto support now as has been amply detailed. For paranoia, you can always carry this little tab with you, or remove it and keep it in a safe place, away from heat and watchful eyes. The convenience of the setup outweighs the inconvenience of a few standard hand movements required to remove it from the cradle

Re: DIY: Get Android Auto in any Car/Bike for Free (or under 10k)

@dkaile

Thanks for this wonderful DIY, I was lazily living with the 2016 Ecosport that has a small analogue display

Your thread got me going, did some reading and bought the Real me pad mini for 7499/- 3GB RAM and 32 GB ROM extendable through SD. Installed the HU reload app and followed the Youtube video. worked on the first attempt with my Vivo 27 Pro phone

Now deciding on the holder for the tab and ordered tempered glass for protection

Cheers

Actually it will hurtle forward with emergency braking / frontal head-on collision. For hurtling back to the driver/passenger, one needs to be suitably rear-ended.
