I bet there is a selection process for the single bidder as well. They can't just arbitrarily say we're going with this guy. And the process has to be public. I can understand if the selection process for suppliers to ISRO and Armed Forces are not made public as it is related to national security but vehicle procurement for daily travel?

These processes are in place to make sure that you can't just pay the guy doing the selection and then sell goods to the government at twice or thrice the market price.

Re: Government of India places order for Kona Electric SUV

Unbelievable, a normal person will have to be doing extremely well to be able to afford or even consider a Kona while Babu's are getting these cars with our monies. EV or not, this is unacceptable that they are holding themselves to different standards.

I believe the government should be procuring things for official use which are defined similar to the standards of a common tax paying citizen.

Namely:
  • Not procure a car which would cost over 10 lakh normally on road for a tax paying citizen. Any vehicle costing over 10 lakh in India is considered Luxury and all forms of taxes, cesses and other duties are applicable for these to the common man, hence the figure makes sense!
  • Not have a top speed of over 80km/h as defined safe by the government. Have a siren inside the car blare when car touches 81kmph
  • Length should not exceed 4 meters because it's been scientifically proven to be optimum for reduction of traffic on our roads

Re: Government of India places order for Kona Electric SUV

Politicians or the 'Bada babus' fantasize bigger vehicles is a known fact. Tigor or Verito doesn't meet their so called status level. This would have been a major factor to consider Kona which makes me think it would've been a fantastic opportunity for Tata to push their Hexa or Harrier which are taking the beat left and right. They should've thought of EVs in these vehicles first and supply to the government. Had Hyundai brought EV with an Xcent, would the government consider it? Pity Tata or Mahindra couldn't think and act like Hyundai and gain fatter profits.

You know the number of Fortuners and Innovas procured for Babus? Forget the center, when a State Government changes, hundreds of these cars are ordered at random without even checking allotments. So many are lying unused at the secretariat. So if they have broken protocol and procured Konas, it's good.

If only one were to live in an utopian state, this would happen. Given the amount of usage these cars (ICE till now) were used for private and public use, I would say the Electric car would recuperate most of the expense shortly, not to mention, there is no way to claim fake fuel bills

80km/h top speed is on certain road where as on NH it is 100 and goes up to 120 kph, so that cannot be enforced.

As mentioned earlier here, lot of politicians go and buy a car for their stature, we had one t**d politician here in karnataka who had an Innova allocated to him but wanted a fortuner and he blatantly said innova doesn't suit my position and people should know when i arrive. so when you have these type of guys who get elected based on caste/religion only, we don't have a remote chance for politicians to follow the guidelines you have stated.

It's the virginity factor, many want new untouched cars when the existing ones are perfectly serviceable. In the UK, all cars are in a pool, you get allocated one and you don't complain unless it is a disability issue
