Re: BMW iX all-electric SUV with 600 km range unveiled

I got invited by BMW for a private preview of this car. BMW the Netherlands has a special location where they hold these previews. Dedicated building, completely closed off room for the car and a nice reception. No photographs allowed I’m afraid.

At your allocated time slot, mine was this very morning, they take you into this room. The car is there with a cover on it. First you get to watch a promotion movie on a large screen.

Next they unveil the car for you.

My first impression was wow, what a humongous car. And ugly to boot. But then again it is positioned as an SUV and there are simply no pretty SUVs. It’s all very functional.

Most of the sales talk is about how green this car is. The dashboard is made out of recycled this, the doormat out of recycled that. Essentially, iBMW has partnered up with the local waste disposal company it seems.

Last night I had a look on their website. The information is still pretty flimsy. There is a configurator, but the actual variation to date are just a few. This car starts at Euro 86.000 here in the Netherlands.

Early deliveries here in the Netherlands are set for late this year, December 2021.

It’s interior is very modern with mostly fancy touch panels and various pieces of glass stuck to the middle console. It looks a bit weird, in a science fiction type of way.

Leather seats, as always BMW seats for me quite well. I am 1.93 so fitting well into many cars is a problem for me. The adjustments of the seat was a bit limited for a car in this price range. Some of the details and some of the plastic used wasn’t really up to standard either I felt. This is still a pre production model. I pointed it out to the sales lady, asking if this would be any different on the real cars. But no, part of making use of recycled material and going green is that you loose a bit of the high end look and feel it seems.

It was good seeing it I the flesh so to speak. This is very much the electric cars will be developping. If you are in the market for a large, fully electric SUV with decent range, this could be a good choice. Despite it shortfalls, in my eyes at least, I would certainly consider it. I do want to drive it though. So I have put my name onto the list for the demo car later this year.

2021 BMW iX prototype review

Quote:
We’ll need more time to confirm BMW range claims. However, we did see the equivalent of 392 miles on the digital display of the prototype when running in Eco mode. If this can be replicated in real-world driving, it’s going to be among the best in class in this particular discipline.

Quote:
Its styling is unconventional – bewildering even, from certain angles, to these eyes. But if the iX can convince us as much from behind the steering wheel as it does from the passenger seat when we finally get to drive it, the incumbent electric SUV protagonists are set to be in for some extra-stiff competition when it reaches the UK later this year.

Re: BMW iX all-electric SUV with 600 km range unveiled

World’s first view of the BMW iX’s “engine bay”.

BMW discourages users from opening the bonnet as there are no user serviceable items within the bay.

There’s no bonnet release lever that you would find in most other cars. Instead, there are two release cables situated at the left and right edge of the dashboard.

-No bonnet insulator
- no hydraulics nor stands to support the bonnet when it’s open, and one way to do so is to use an Allen key.

Not much to see here, just the 12-volt battery and the coolant reservoir, neither of which requires attention from the owner.

I guess you cannot take this car to one of those "Security obsessed" offices which will open your bonnet every day

BMW iX Flow makes the SUV change color using E-Reader Technology.

The BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink is the first car in the world whose exterior colour can change at the touch of a button.

The colour changes are made possible by a specially developed body wrap tailored precisely to the contours of the iX Flow. When stimulated by electrical signals, the electrophoretic technology - similar to that used in Kindle e-readers - brings different colour pigments to the surface, causing the body skin to take on the desired colour.

Re: BMW iX all-electric SUV with 600 km range unveiled

So with the colour changing tech kind of becoming an feature in many upcoming cars (Apple car concept also has this feature), will we be seeing an end of car wrapping industry?

Just wonder what would be the cost if there is a scratch or dent

Re: BMW iX all-electric SUV with 600 km range unveiled

Since it's e-reader tech, they can maybe have it display text as well - An apology for the way it looks should go down well with everyone who sees this thing on the road.

Jokes aside, impressive flex for the tech if not for the car itself. One of the few realistic use cases could be for company vehicles to display branding, emergency vehicles to alert traffic instead of the usual lights/siren etc. If I see an ambulance barrelling down the road all red and blue I'd know somebody burnt their eyes looking at the new grills on a bimmer.

Can E-ink support color? Don't laugh at me but AFAIK it supports only shades of grey. Not 50 but 4096 shades or so, plus white and (almost) black. I must be outdated perhaps.

Our Netas and other VVIPs will soon be thanking their luck.
