Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Maruti Suzuki: Can't depend only on EV subsidies, need to reduce acquisition costs.

- High battery costs pushing up EV prices
- Can’t rely on subsidies which might be withdrawn
- Reducing combustion engine emissions a better option than launching EVs, for now.

Quote:
Srivastava pointed out, “The charging infrastructure is still not at a great level. Even in places where you have good charging infrastructure, you still find the adoption of EVs a little low, which is because of the [high] acquisition cost.”
Quote:
The route to electric cars is through electrification. This means we’ll probably see more hybrid cars coming in before pure EVs.”
Quote:
“If we want to make a difference to the environment, we need to do something for these [ICE] cars [which are in majority].

Not sure if this is indicative of anything, but there seems finally seems to be some progress on Maruti Suzuki's EV plans for India. It would be interesting to see how they catch up to the first-movers after years of resting on their laurels!

Imagine if they are recruiting at the moment, then this person should come and settle down in the company and then start driving things, so their 2025 target is pretty much on track. Of course these requisitions are not the only ones who would work on the EVs and there would have been a lot of work that is already ongoing but if this is any indication then thats definitely not confidence inspiring to me. But since they have support from Suzuki and Toyota, most of the burden of developing a new product is shared. As mentioned in the JD, the manager has to take care of local trends, regulations etc rather than technology and stuff. Hope they get a solid candidate who can do a good job!

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Maruti YY8 will be made at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and will also spawn a Toyota derivative.

Maruti YY8 Electric SUV Maruti has green lighted a new electric SUV project, codenamed YY8.

Quote:
Information about the upcoming Maruti YY8 (codename) is scarce as of now but it will adopt an SUV-ish body with compact footprints.Expect it to compete with the future EV variant of the brisk selling Tata Punch.

While technical specifications are still under wraps, the Maruti YY8 electric crossover will benefit from Suzuki’s partnership with Toyota.

This would mean, the vehicle in question will also be sold with Toyota branding both in India and in select overseas markets. Touted to be ready for the market sometime in 2024 (with a possible debut at the Auto Expo), the electric mini SUV from Maruti will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.

It looks like both Maruti and Toyota have aggressive sales targets for this vehicle, as the expected production target per year is 1.5 lakh units.

With Suzuki’s lightweight Heartect and Toyota’s DNGA at disposal, it is unclear which architecture will the Maruti YY8 adopt. Both platforms are versatile and EV compatible. The Heartect is already heavily localized in India with a well established supply chain apparatus, making for a short time-to-market.

On the other hand, Toyota’s DNGA has a better benefit due to economies of scale on a global level.

This architecture is likely to be the basis of upcoming Toyota / Maruti SUV to rival Hyundai Creta. If that is the case, it implies that Toyota has already managed to localize this architecture to meet mass-market price targets in India.

Expect the electric mini SUV to be priced under INR 10 lakhs. Drive range of around 250-350 kms should be a good place to start for an entry-level EV in India.

The lithium-ion battery is most likely to be sourced locally from the Toshiba facility which is also located in Gujarat. All major OEMs are working intensely on their respective mass-market electric vehicles for India and we expect to see an avalanche of new launches as we approach the middle part of this decade.

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Maruti Suzuki, Toyota India’s first EV to be a global midsize SUV.

The all-electric SUV will be larger than the Creta and have a range up to 500km. Slated for a launch in 2025, it’ll be manufactured in and exported from Gujarat.

Unlike the Baleno-Glanza and Brezza-Urban Cruiser badge engineering exercises, each brand will have its own distinctive styling for this all-electric SUV.

The Maruti Suzuki version (codename: YY8) will sport a new design language that is expected to be futuristic and radically different from the mundane styling of the current IC (internal combustion) engine range.

Quote:
Maruti-Toyota’s electric SUV to be wider, have a longer wheelbase than the Creta
To have a 48kWh or 59kWh battery pack, giving 400-500km of driving range
To be priced competitively, even against the Tata Nexon EV
Quote:
a 4.2-metre long SUV that’s even bigger and wider than a Creta! In fact, for size, it competes more with the MG ZS EV, the largest of the current crop of mainstream EVs.

Like most ‘born electric’ EVs, the YY8 has a long wheelbase, 2,700mm to be precise. Modern electric platforms or skateboards come with slim, flat battery packs designed to sit within the wheelbase for optimal packaging and weight distribution. Hence, a long wheelbase is a key consideration in the development of an electric skateboard as wheelbase length has a direct correlation to the size of the battery.

Quote:
The YY8 is being developed in both two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The base two-wheel-drive variant is expected to get a single 138hp motor and a 48kWh battery pack, which is good for an approximate range of 400km under standard test conditions. The all-wheel-drive variant, powered by two electric motors, should produce a combined 170hp and get a larger 59kWh battery pack, which boosts range to an estimated 500km in real world conditions.

It’s not clear if the all-wheel-drive version of the YY8 will be offered in the domestic market or is mainly for exports.

On the other hand, the Toyota derivative is likely to be launched in India with both two-wheel and all-wheel drive options. In fact, the Toyota badged version of the YY8 will have identical specifications, but external dimensions may vary as the design and styling will be completely different and along the lines of the BZ4X EV.

Maruti Suzuki-Toyota electric midsize SUV: bespoke platform to open up huge cabin space:

Quote:
The YY8 will be based on the 27PL platform, a skateboard architecture meant for small electric vehicles, derived from Toyota’s 40PL global platform. Considering the packaging freedom offered by such a born electric architecture – something that both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will take full advantage of the interiors of the YY8 are likely to be revolutionary.

With no engine compartment, transmission tunnel and centre console to worry about, the 40PL platform will allow designers to push the cabin to all corners of the car, which will free up a huge amount of interior space.
Maruti Suzuki-Toyota electric midsize SUV to use made-in-India battery pack:

YY8 will be extremely price competitive. Sources say that the company is targeting a price in the Rs 13 lakh-15 lakh range, which, given the YY8’s size, specs and tech, makes every other EV, including the bestselling Nexon EV (Rs 14.29 lakh-16.90 lakh, ex-showroom), look overpriced.

Quote:
for sure is that this model will be a game changer for Maruti Suzuki. Built on a dedicated, global EV skateboard, the YY8, with its mix of the latest tech and affordability, could be Maruti Suzuki’s ticket to leapfrog in the EV race

The Maruti Suzuki YY8 and its Toyota equivalent are likely to launch in India by 2025.

Once Maruti brings EV, I am sure they will also start having tons of charging stations at each of their dealerships and service stations and this means the range anxiety will mostly go away and may be help with faster adoption of EVs.

And we all know what Brezza has done to the then-untouchable sub-4m SUVs.

And, they know that there won't be too much that can be earned from servicing these EVs. So, they may charge a handsome premium for the initial product. Also, any product smaller than this car may not come, as they can't charge such a premium from the sub-10L customers - the reason why Wagon-R EV went out of the sight.

I won't be surprised if the expected prices see a jump by the time we reach 2025. 17-20 lakh ex-showroom is my expectation in 2025. I wonder how was ACI able to get the LxWxH and battery capacities even before a test-mule has hit the road unless Suzuki/Toyota have already developed prototypes and are testing the EVs out. And for a Creta-sized car the weight at 1728kg is pretty high when compared to the Nexon EV and MG ZS EV.

My Creta will be 8 years in 2025, will be waiting for Toyota's version in AWD, can be a perfect candidate for an upgrade.

Re: Maruti-Suzuki to launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2025

Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV axed.

Maruti shifts its focus away from the budget end of the EV segment.

Business case does not justify a battery-powered WagonR, which would have had to be priced around 60 percent higher than the petrol equivalent for it to be profitable.

All focus is now on the mid sized SUV ( BEV) YY8, for a launch by 2025.

Toyota - Suzuki EV's for India. These 3 cars will be of interest to India.

It would be unlikely any BEV will be in the sub ₹ 10 lakh range

Maruti, Toyota aim to leapfrog rivals with global EV skateboard, latest battery tech:

As such, the models are likely to make their global debut in Europe around October 2024, before the India launch, followed by Japan in the first half of 2025.

- Target is to produce 1,25,000 EVs for Maruti and Toyota at former’s Gujarat plant

Toyota-Suzuki coalition’s 40PL electric skateboard: EV C.A. Spirit Co – a Japanese EV consortium

Quote:
True to its name, the fundamental objective of EV Common Architecture Spirit Co is to jointly develop a common, dedicated EV platform or skateboard and a parts bin of EV components that will be shared by all the companies in this coalition. And to achieve this, the individual strengths of each member automaker are being used.
Quote:
Denso, for instance, is contributing its expertise in electronics and Mazda is providing assistance in product planning and computer modelling. Subaru is taking the lead in development of certain medium-sized vehicles and lending its 4x4 expertise while compact cars have been assigned to Suzuki and Daihatsu (more on this later).
The new 40PL platform is to the EV C.A. group of companies what the MEB platform is to the Volkswagen Group.

Quote:
The versatility of the 40PL platform stems from the fact that it can accommodate numerous vehicle body types, since elements like the wheelbase, overhangs and the number of batteries can be altered. The only components which can’t be changed are the positions of the front and rear electric motors, the layout under the hood, the position of the driver relative to the front wheels and the width of the battery pack.

The Subaru Solterra, Lexus RZ and the Toyota BZ4X are the first products to be seen on the 40PL new architecture. Each brand has given the 40PL its own name for marketing purposes. Subaru calls it eSGP and Toyota has christened it e-TNGA.
Quote:
This grand alliance of Japanese automakers has huge ramifications for Maruti Suzuki because parent Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) has been given the responsibility of developing a family of small EVs (codenamed 27PL) on the mother 40PL platform. This includes SUVs and MPVs, which will be manufactured in Suzuki’s Gujarat plant for global markets like Europe, Japan and, of course, India.

However, the 27PL series of vehicles aren’t exactly small. As we have exclusively reported, the platform will underpin Maruti Suzuki’s first EV (codename: YY8) that will be even larger than the Hyundai Creta. Toyota will also launch its own equivalent of the all-electric model.
Maruti Suzuki, Toyota electric midsize SUV: launch timeline, volume targets:

Notably, the YY8 and its sister model will be global products, and exports will be a major consideration for Suzuki and Toyota. As such, the models are likely to make their global debut in Europe around October 2024, before the India launch, followed by Japan in the first half of 2025.

An annual production volume of around 1,25,000 cars for both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota is being planned, of which 60,000 is for the Indian market, 40,000 for Europe and around 25,000 for Japan

Maruti Suzuki, Toyota electric mid-size SUV to use locally sourced battery packs

Quote:
The volumes that the Japanese carmakers are aiming for will give the 27PL project good economies of scale and justify a high level of localisation, which is the key to making electric cars affordable in India. The YY8 and all its derivatives will no doubt have a high level of local content, including the battery pack, which will be sourced from TDSG, a large-scale battery manufacturing joint-venture between Suzuki Motor Corp., Denso Corp., and Toshiba Corp., set up in Gujarat to locally manufacture lithium-ion battery packs.

Locally sourcing the battery pack, which is singularly the most expensive component of an EV, will no doubt give a big cost advantage over rival manufacturers who at best locally assemble imported battery packs. However, there are no immediate plans for manufacturing lithium-ion cells, which will be sourced from BYD – one of the world’s leading battery makers in China.
Notably, TDSG will be using the ‘Blade Battery’ cells unveiled by BYD in early 2020. The Chinese EV major claims that the Blade cells are “ultra-safe” and cheaper, since they go directly from the cell to the pack level, without the need for modules, also making the packaging easier. This should make the BYD batteries better suited for Indian conditions, giving the Maruti-Toyota combine a further leg up in the EV race
