When we talk about EVs, its the tip of the proverbial iceberg, just the visible part of a massive backend system of EV capable grids, charging infrastructure, vendors, IP with Indian players, battery tech available in India, battery manufacturing capability.... The list goes on and on and on...

Bottom line is, all the major players are playing a wait and watch game (Tesla included) to see which way the winds are blowing before launching their vehicles.

I am almost a hundred percent sure, Tata's Altroz (maybe even the Punch) and Mahindra's 300 based EV are already ready for launch, but they are delaying their respective launches as they are worried that people wont buy the vehicles due to

1. High vehicle costs due to economies of scale not yet kicking in (and batteries being imported)
2. Worries about the charging network which is currently causing a great deal of range anxiety.

Point being, unlike the US or EU, where the private sector lead the charge for EV uptake, in India, due to the wafer thin margins, the government needs to step in and help develop the charging infrastructure (at the very least) to promote the sale of EVs in India.

In addition the government needs to bring in the CAFE type requirements for 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler manufacturers which forces them to invest more in EVs than in traditional ICE vehicles.

The decade holds great promise for the Indian automotive scene.

Very well said. In a county where powercuts are the norm, we really need to think about expanding the power generation and distribution infra to handle the delta EV loads.

While it is praise-worthy that Mahindra is introducing smart features in these EVs, the execution and reliability of the interface remains to be seen. They (Mahindra) need to do numerous tests in all kinds of climate, terrain, while continually keeping all the touch/smart features actively working so that they can iron out all the usual teething troubles and niggles that are associated with their first batch of cars always. Indian Car Manufactures have shown the world that we can make great looking vehicles, great performing, feature packed, comfortable and supremely safe vehicles. Our Engineers do a great job at perfecting everything. All we need to do now is to remove the fear of unreliable lemons off the buyers' mind.

Mahindra to launch all-electric XUV800, electric coupe by July 2024.

XUV800 EV based on XUV700 to debut Mahindra’s new all-electric platform; will launch alongside electric coupe SUV based on upcoming XUV900.

On August 15, 2022, Mahindra will have a grand showcase of its ‘Born Electric Vision’ – or future EV plans, but rather than three futuristic concept cars as originally previewed, there will now be five; talk about two of them.

The most significant among the EV concepts being shown at the Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) studio in Oxfordshire, UK will be a near-production-ready electric version of the XUV700, which will likely be called XUV800 (codename: W610).

The XUV800’s design is expected to have a clear visual link to the XUV700, and will, in fact, share the ICE SUV’s ‘top hat’ or bodywork, and even its 2,750mm wheelbase. As such, expect the overall silhouette to remain the same, a fact that was alluded to in Mahindra’s teaser campaign for the EVs, where one of the SUVs looked pretty much identical to the XUV700. What’s likely to change, however, are the front and rear end of the SUV, with the grille likely to be blanked out and the bumpers and lights getting a redesign. Some futuristic detailing to better reflect its all-electric propulsion can also be expected.

But while it may bear resemblance to an XUV700, the XUV800 will use Mahindra’s new born-electric skateboard platform underneath. This may not be Mahindra’s first electric SUV (the all-electric XUV400 will come first in early 2023) but the XUV800 marks the debut of Mahindra’s first bespoke EV platform.

Mahindra and Volkswagen joined forces in May this year to evaluate component sharing for EVs. This partnership will bear fruit with the XUV800, which will source electric motors and battery cells from VW’s MEB modular electric platform. The prismatic cells will be imported from Volkswagen’s plant in Salzgitter, Germany, which will be VW’s first EV battery hub and part of its new PowerCo battery business unit. Except for the battery cells and motors, all other electrical components like the battery pack, the BMS and other ancillaries will be locally made in Mahindra’s plant in Chakan, Maharashtra.

While the final battery size and motor outputs are not known, it’s safe to take the Volkswagen ID 4 as a point of reference. After all, the German crossover’s 4,580mm length and 2,760mm wheelbase are not far removed from the XUV700’s. Therefore you can expect a battery capacity of around 77-82kWh, with a range rating of over 500km; the real-world range will likely be less. Much like the VW, and in keeping with the XUV700’s philosophy of offering AWD on the top variant, expect the XUV800 to offer the option of a dual-motor powertrain that drives all four wheels. The difference is, as with many BEVs, the 2WD model could be rear-wheel drive, unlike the ICE XUV700, which is front-wheel drive.

Coupe versions could be called XUV900 and XUV1000 (EV):

likely be christened the XUV900 (codename: W620). It is expected to draw design inspiration from the XUV Aero concept from 2016, share its powertrains with the XUV700, albeit with potentially higher outputs, and of course be restricted to a five-seat layout.

as part of Mahindra’s EV push, there will, of course, be an electric version as well (codename: M310), and this too will be represented by one of the concept SUVs shown on August 15. Going by Mahindra’s apparent SUV naming practice with ICE and EV counterparts taking on alternate numbers – XUV300 and 400, XUV700 and 800 – this coupe SUV EV could very well end up taking the XUV1000 name. Like the XUV800, it will use the same top hat as the XUV900 with the BEV skateboard platform and powertrains underneath.

Launch timeline for Mahindra’s new electric SUVs:

- XUV300-based XUV400 EV that will be shown in September, with a launch expected in early 2023.

- XUV800 (W610) will follow next with a start of production (SOP) date of 2024. Incidentally, this SOP date is shared with the XUV1000 electric coupe (M310), which means we could very well see both models launched around the same time.

Volumes:

- For the XUV800(W610), suppliers have been told gear up for a volume of 9,000 units in the first full year of production, rising to 12,000 in the subsequent year, whilst the XUV1000 electric coupe (M310) has a more modest volume target of 2,500 units in the first year, rising to 10,500 units thereon.


This falls in line with Mahindra’s plan to launch eight new EVs by 2027, accounting for 20 percent of its total UV volumes.

Mahindra Automotives new electric vehicles will be developed under two brands - XUV and BE.

Well, that was a let down. Not even a prototype. All we got to see were renders. A few points i noted down before i gave up on making notes:
- Two electric brands - XUV(Twin Peaks) and BE
- Two brands will share same platform.
- 5 new models.
- inglo - Name of Mahindra's new born electric platform.
- blade and prismatic batteries.
- 60-80 kwh batteries. 175kw peak charging. 80% in 30 minutes.

No confirmed start of production or launch dates.

I saw the unveil, was expecting a demo vehicle or a concept vehicle, but in the end all that was shown was great renders. I hope Mahindra did not spend all this time trying to complete these renders. They were impressive but I will not hold my breath for Mahindra until I see something concrete.

The BE models will feature a new and aggressive design language, and will consist of three new EVs – BE.05, BE.07 and BE.09.

The Mahindra XUVe9 is an all-electric SUV coupe and the first of the two models under the electric XUV sub-brand.









Highlight of the cabin will be the massive pillar-to-pillar triple screen set-up which comprises a panel housing three high res 12.3-inch displays.

Interesting stuff in the presentation. If you take away all the razzmatazz and the rave like aesthetic of the presentation - there are 5 models, all SUVs which will be primarily funded ($250 million) by British International Investment. There are no dates or prototypes of any of the models, neither do we know what stage the current development is in.

But I am still happy to see Mahindra taking this step albeit maybe 3 years later than ideal.

No XUV 300/400 electric announced in this video. Although such rumours exist, the car will not be based on the INGLO platform which this event presented. It might be a separate car which is based on retrofitting an electric battery/motor to the current XUV 300.

From what I inferred, the BE brand will be city focused with aggressive styling and coupe like designs (link Land Rover Evoque) while the XUV E series is more traditional SUV with the boxy shape and will probably be larger as well with 7 row seats. This is just speculation, and seems like Mahindra were doing the same.

At the end of 20 minutes presentation (or a lecture on adjectives), Mahindra said "Today, we are bringing the vision into reality". In reality, it's "Today, we are bringing the vision into renders".

From the event, it's clear that the event is geared toward investors rather than customers or enthusiasts. They don't even have a working prototype to showcase after hyping it for months. No wonder, they have to rely on silly adjectives and third-grade renders. After all this fuss, the first product is expected to be available 2.5 years later.
