Vietnam-based EV maker, VinFast Auto, is all set to launch its first EV in the Indian market in April 2024.

According to a media report, the Tesla-rivaling EV maker plans to launch 2-3 electric SUVs starting with the VF e-34 crossover. It is likely to be imported via the CBU route.

VinFast also plans to bring its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs to India. The report states that these would be assembled locally. Subsequently, the brand will introduce more models including a full-size sedan.

The VinFast VF8 was spotted in India for the first time in June last year. The SUV comes in a dual-motor configuration with a combined output of 397 BHP and 620 Nm and has an estimated maximum range of 471 km (WLTP cycle).

VinFast aims to compete with the American EV maker Tesla in India.

Vinfast plots CKD plants for EVs in India and Indonesia.

Vietnamese EV maker’s future global growth strategy involves setting up CKD plants in India and Indonesia, each with total capacity of up to 50,000 cars per year. Production is expected to commence by 2026.

Quote:
VinFast aims to access the tremendous potential for increased EV adoption in India and Indonesia where EV penetration is currently only 1%. The establishment of VinFast facilities in these local markets can provide access to government incentives for local manufacturing, relief from certain tariffs and taxes and access to raw materials at attractive rates.

Each CKD facility in Indonesia and India has a planned total capacity of up to 50,000 cars per year and an estimated total capital expenditure of US$150 million to US$200 million in Phase 1. Production is expected to commence by 2026

It's good that new EVs will enter our market. Their lineup looks good but I saw a few reviews online and they were not promising. Very basic things not working correctly. Let's hope they fix the issues before coming here as they are not going to be paying Indians for each issue we face.

Vinfast's US debut was not particularly well received, based on the observed quality of the media vehicles - a simple Google search will yield details.

If they are now going to sell the same proposition in India at a significantly higher price due to being fully imported, I don't see the business justification - especially for a relatively new manufacturer. New EV makers are also known to lose significant money on every vehicle they sell for a few years before they can optimize production costs and ramp up capacity.

Vinfast eyeing Ford Chennai plant for India entry.

Vietnamese carmaker acquiring the plant could be a win-win situation for both parties.

Construction of VinFast's Indian factory to begin on February 25

Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has announced that construction work on its first manufacturing unit in India will commence on February 25.

Last month, VinFast signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up a factory in Thoothukudi. The company plans to invest US$ 500 million in the first phase of the integrated EV facility.

According to the company, the new manufacturing facility will have an annual production capacity of up to 1,50,000 units. The factory will not only serve the Indian market but will also supply EVs to South Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries. It is expected to generate 3,000-3,500 job opportunities.

VinFast plans to introduce 2-3 electric SUVs in India, starting with the VF e-34 crossover. The carmaker also plans to bring the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs to India.

Re: VinFast to launch its first electric SUV in India in April 2024

Vinfast's reception in the US has been poor. Both software-related and handling problems. Although, this situation might reflect the broader challenges that foreign manufacturers encounter when trying to penetrate the US market.

Has anyone had firsthand experience with Vinfast? While I appreciate the employment opportunities and foreign direct investment (FDI) it brings, I remain doubtful about the vehicles' success.

Add to that, the persecution of Vietnamese citizens by their authorities for highlighting and criticizing Vinfast vehicles on online media.

Re: VinFast to launch its first electric SUV in India in April 2024

Why are they investing so much to export to SE Asia and other countries ? Production for India could be here since our duties on CBU is huge. But not sure why they don't want to invest in Vietnam and benefit there with exports and jobs. Anything extra that we are providing to them ?

Re: VinFast to launch its first electric SUV in India in April 2024

The material quality is being stated to be poor by Americans. Maybe they are too spoiled for choice by the already established manufacturers there like Cadillac, GMC or what not due to which this new carmaker may be facing difficulty to match the already high American standard. Its quite possible that Vinfast may land correctly on India's expectation
