Yes I understand that Rudra, but I seem to be quite bothered about it since I do many a time end up shooting in bad light/variable light(especially while covering certain events and while shooting wildlife and sport) and also many a time I have had to up the shutter speed to catch a fast moving subject where a bump in ISO became necessary for me to get the right exposure, while maintaining the high shutter speed.

I am actually an admirer of high ISO imagery, especially in black and white. I really like the grainy gritty look there. I feel, the creative can really use it to their advantage.

Really? I didn't realise all Pentax dSLRs came with full magnesium body.

Apart from the weather sealing, magnesium bodies with better ergonomics, FPS and better auto focussing system is what gives you more keepers than a competing entry level cam.

Neither do i think all Pentaxes are Mag alloy made.
But some of their entry level cams like the K200 had full weather sealing with weather sealed lenses. Body is GRP.

If it was me i'd take the 500D kit. The 40D has a lot of features I never use except maybe for the faster fps. It really depends on your need if you need the weight and feel (and maybe better reliability) of the 40D get it if you are a casual family photographer then the 500D makes more sense.

Shame. I would guess we could all learn a but from your photos. 20 minutes with Rudra-da a few months ago more than doubled my knowledge.

Well you did talk about having 2 Nikon bodies and a whole bunch of rather expensive lenses earlier. They have probably not made a bag that can accomodate all your camera equipment but why carry a D90 when you have so many better bodies with you? Size?

Nice price. I was going to recommend the same kit for my brother in law (wife's brother) along with the 55-250 and a 35/2.0 or 50/1.8 this way he could borrow my lenses when he needed them.

in my book...anything bigger than 35mm.

Rudra-da, can these old FD lenses be used on modern day bodies. Will they work? I can also get some 2 Canonflex lenses from my dad's days. A 50/1.8 and a 100/2! How would they compare to the 50/1.4 and 100/2 primes I have now? I dont know where the body went but I remember it to be very sturdy. I had dropped the body (with lens mounted on it) and other than a dent nothing happened. My dad was not even mad that I dropeed the body. I was 11 then. I dont dare drop my 40D or newer lenses!

Come to think of it even my modern lenses are 'breech lock' right? The mount is a bayonet type like Nikon etc.. but the locking is still via a pin that pops and 'breaches' into a corresponding 'nest' in the body. I can feel the 'breaching' mechanisim working atleast I believe I can. Maybe I am just imagining this!

BTW killer photo. If I could ever take pics like that I'd die happy.

I am new to DSLR world and I am in a dilemma in selecting the lens for my Canon Body (APSC). I am interested in Landscape and Portrait Shootings. Basically I travel a lot and using the camera for that.

I have an option for going for either 15-85mm f/3.5-5 IS USM or 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

I know the second one is fast enough and it have a higher Aperture.


This will be my first lens and later I know I need to add other set like 70-200 f/2.8 0r 100-400 f/4 and may be in wide angle side

Please help me in this regard

Current K7 has Mag alloy + Steel sub structure.

Point was a pro will use what fills the need.

I will start posting images on-line in coming future. But there is already a lot available over the Internet to leave. Chase Jarvis and Joey Lawrence have there blogs on-line and provide quite good tips.


D90 is sufficient for day to day use. D3/D3x is good when i need 2 CF cards and tethering but otherwise for everyday use D90 does everything i need.

Even D90 is quite big, i want thinking about D40 but missing af motor makes it a no-go.


AFAIK there was an adapter available but don`t know if its still available. Not 100% sure about it.

Do you plan to move to FF in the next 5 years? If so I'd stick to lenses that are FF today.

The lenses you have listed are all above Rs. 40K in cost. Not cheap. If you are moving to FF in the near future the 17-55 or 15-85 will become redundant.

Do you have any idea what you intend shooting? Will you need a f/2.8 zoom? How wide do you need to go? etc... if you dont need to go too wide or too fast the 24-105/100-400 combo might be an option too.

I have a 40D I have found that I am often quite happy with a 16-35/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 (both borrowed). That gap between 35 and 70mm is hardly missed. On an APS-C body the 16-35 will work like a 26-55. A 24mm on the other hand (like a 24-105/4) will only go as wide as 45mm or so.

If however you intend to choose only between the 17-55 and 15-85 I'd take the former (even though I have never used the 15-85).

No, they cant be used directly. Flange design has changed. Electronic contacts are there now. But there was a coupler ring available years ago to fit FD on AF cameras. Never became popular because there was a slight change in focal length due to coupler thickness.
Are they FL lens? Same problem would come up Navin..fitting. Besides if they’re FL lens then they were designed for stopped down metering. There was issue with viewing too. FL lens being manual, lens was allowing light within given aperture while viewing. So at 5.6 for example, lens will allow you to see a stopped down view.

In 1971 Full Diaphragm lens was introduced to counter this chore.
In terms of optical quality new lens should be better. Computer aided designs have changed a lot of things in our life.
Yes, they were actually built like a tank.No, you’re not imagining. Canon lens is still breech lock. Only difference is this... Those days only rear ring was rotating clockwise and today the whole lens barrel rotates clockwise. :)
A brilliant piece of engineering I think. Another brilliant engineering is their auto focus motor design.

How about 50mm f1.4 and something along the lines of 10-20mm ?

50mm f1.4 will give you 80mm, ideal for Portraits and added benefit of faster lens and still be reasonably priced.

10-20mm will give you chance to both experiment with ultra wide angle (WA on a Cropped sensor) and to do some landscape shots. Remember its easier to do Landscape shots with WA/UWA lenses than Telephoto due to DOF factor.

Or alternatively get something like Tamron 18-250mm, it has a wide zoom range and still acceptable CA and Distortion for a cropped sensor. This will let you shoot without considering lens limitations (in terms of reach) and after few months you will know your most used range and can sell on 18-250mm and get faster lens suited to your range.

yeah! heard similar things from many who come from film days!! One nice gentleman from my office was so impressed to see me using a film camera in the days of digital that he even offered to give his cameras one of them is a folding type which takes 120 film and the another one is a spy cam which takes 110 film. 120 film can bought some how but 110. I need to put some more extra work!!!

Yea, sorry i meant not using it more often. Its this one. I have Nikon 90mm f4.5 with a set of center ND filters and hot shoe mounted range-finder. I got it in a deal as a package with nikon 300mm 3.8 vr.

It takes 120/220 film and makes a negative 6x17 cm in size and is quite hard to use.

I want to sell it on and get Seitz 6x17 digital but before i do that, i want to have a crack at making my own Scanner Cam and see if its worth the effort. stupid:
