I am not an expert, but my words of wisdom pours out whenever someone is asking a question::)

Offcourse 70-300 is better as it has wider reach. Difference between Canon Vs 3rd party is the difference of your wallet weight after the purchase. Nowadays Sigma/Tokina/Tamron are reviewed to produce equal quality outputs in line with many canon/nikon series. :thumbs up

70-300 with its IS and USM has measurably and significantly better output than the EF-S 55-250 even in small print sizes. Then there is a 70-300 "DO" IS USM. Supposed to be better for portrait work but costs a whopping 90K. Another thing is that the 70-300 is "EF" and will go with the full framers I am sure most of us will upgrade to in the near future whereas the EF-S will be sunk costs then.

But if you are even considering the 70-300 f4-5.6 do consider the the 70-200 f4L. For a not too significant price bump and at a cost of 100mm on the tele end you end up with perhaps the only affordable L glass canon offers.

As for the third party glass, they are not only available, the are much cheaper and many are actually very good. One such example will be the Tamron-70-200mm f2.8 Di-Macro. The similar specced Canon L retails for a lakh!

i have another question,

there sre some lenses(though a bit expensive) like 18-200 etc so it means rather than having a kit lens, one can buy the body and pick a lens like this rather than having a separate 70-300 etc type lense.

Any side effects of having one lens that has bigger range ?

Yes, you might click more and your sensor will be cleaner as you dont have to keep swaping 2 lenses in the bag according to the situation. Thats the only drawback.:). You should look at Tamron 18-270 reviews. Next question please.:thumbs up

18-200 is a popular lens and is not very expensive considering that you were looking at the 70-300. The problem here is that such long zoom ranges invariably (in non L class) means visible aberrations at the wide and long end. But have not seen them affect out really badly in real world. But if you are a pixel peeper and will seek pleasure in blowups, there may be an issue.

But for me the real problem is that I have seen two 18-200s develop mechanical problems after prolonged use and especially if the use has been in dusty environs (that would be anywhere in India!).

But one can strike a balance (or compromise) and consider the EF-S 17-85 f 4-5.6 which is definit

Honestly, you will be most probably need this range more than the long tele unless you are into serious birding or wild life. In most cases, a new photographer is either clicking landscapes or portraits or trying out a few macros... So the long tele is a waste...

simply_sunny, what budget you are looking for? Since you were comparing 55-250 and the 70-300, I have a feeling that you might be referring to the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM which sells for INR 12,075.00 and comparable to the price of EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS at INR 12,275.00

As per reviews, 75-300 is not that great and you are better off with a 55-250 which has IS.

Navin, I got this mixed up, the 33k pricing is US and in Bangalore it retails at 37k.

i am looking to spend 800 pounds give or take and i am not in hurry as i am a novice.

so just trying to understand more by reading into you guys' knowledgeable comments in this thread and comparing prices of the options available.

but this is for sure the more i read the more i get confused.

the bottomline is i am almost decided on buying 550d which i think is a gud DSLR and will serve me for few years well as i learn more but which combo of lenses?

i am not an avid photographer but who doesnt like to shoot better pictures.

Honestly, you would do better to get the 550D and invest time slicking, reviewing reading and more clicking. Yes, good lens means good pics but as a newbie to DSLRs, believe me it takes significant effort and time to figure settings out, understand when to use what mode, shooting in raw, processing raw........ To cut it short, you will have enough on your plate for a few months!
After a few months you will begin to understand your equipment and yourself better as a photographer. A review of your pics will tell you what you tend to shoot more. Like in my case it is landscapes and portraits. So now after an year of owning a 500D and close to 3000 pics, I can with confidence say that I know the lens combination I need as I know what i tend to shoot.

So get the cam and have fun! By the way, even the stock 18-55 is not a bad lens!

@sunny_001, where do you plan to buy the gadgets? From a shop at London or online?
I'm at UK now and just wondering if there are places where I get the best deals.
