Guys, im new to photography, and im looking at getting a DSLR. There are offers at my side of the world.
The Nikon D3000+18-55mm lens+4gb card+a carry case+a binocular for SR 2,649 @ Rs12 = INR 31,788
The Canon 450D+18-55mm lens+2gb card+case for SR 2,899 @ Rs12 = INR 34,788
The Canon 500D+18-55mm lens, no freebies for SR 3,599 @ Rs12 = INR 43,188
With my budget, i can get either the Nikon 3000D or the Canon 450D, i'd have to stretch a bit for the 500D, plus i'll have to invest in a memory card (not much though) and a case if i get the 500D. I spoke to friend, and he suggested i get the 450D. Which one do you guys think is best for me?

I find some of the posts here very funny - people obsess so much on sensor this that etc. When no one can look at an image and tell which cam shot it :p 30 Photos That Changed the World | Photography Schools Online
Honestly, so many of those photos are not about technology - neither would some highly rated ones on flickr. yet we ruminate so much. buy what fits the budget or what feels good to hold. paralysis analysis led nowhere - and in the end its still a heart decision :) |
+1 to this. And thank you for sharing that link. I personally love Bresson, but many people would still say "He used a leica". Sigh. I have given up on the equipment talk and would add wherever I feel necessary and have accepted the fact that these arguments will keep going on and there's not much we can do about it.

Canon 1000D is a brilliant camera and more than enough for your needs. The kit lens is non IS. IS is a brilliant feature to have, but I don't quite believe that it gives us 3 more stops.
You kit lens is more than sufficient for now. Get familiar with the camera and all it's features. That means getting comfortable in all the manual modes.
3 years down the line, you can opt for a better body, but your lens collection will remain as it is, and can be used till they break.
Last I checked, Canon 1000D was retailing for Rs. 23k with lens and Rs. 20k without the lens. Official figures. |
+1 to this as well. Invest more in glasses, it's worth the investment.
Nikon D3000 will only be able to use AF-S lenses. You will be able to mount the AF lenses, but auto focus won't work. This is the major reason why I would not consider D3000.
Canon 450D has been replaced now with 1000D/500D. Now, this does not mean that it's any less capable. Just a heads up. What is the price of Canon 1000D?
The 1000D retails for SR 2,399 thats INR 28,788 with a 2gb card and a 18-55 lens
there's another offer too, i can pay SR 600 more (INR7,200) for a 75-300 lens.
At the end of the day, it really does not matter which XYZ camera you use. What you need is TALENT. And that's not for sale.
Iam realising this the hard way ;)

A correction 450D is not replaced by 1000D , 1000D is entry level offering and 450D is way above , 450D was replaced by 500D and now latest is 550D.

Is this the older version Canon 75-300 I think it is totally avoidable , Spend some more money and get Canon 70-300 IS USM instead. In this buget Sigma 70-300 APO DG is lot better then Canon 75-300.

Although I agree that 75-300 is avoidable, the 70-300 IS USM cost almost 4 times as the 75-300. I would suggest a 55-250 IS instead of the 75-300.

@amitk26 & Jaguar - That's exactly what i was told. The 450D is supposed to be much better than the 1000D. So do you guys suggest the 450D or the 500D? or the 550D?

My mistake. That's why put in 1000D/500D options. Anyways, what camera you want to get depends on your budget. The more you pay, the better features you will get. But even a entry level camera is enough to produce stunning results.
And there are cameras available at all price points.

If you want Video ( I think Video is required feature) and you have budget of around 45000/- go for 550D , In case you are slightly tight on budget but need Video Capability then 500 D .
If you think you don't need video then it is clear 450D.
In case you need video my suggestion would be to buy a 500D it offers Full HD at 20 FPS and 720P at 30FPS ( HD Ready ) and almost all features of 550D. And invest the money saved in buying a 55-250 IS lens.
450D only if you get a great bargain in price and you are sure you will never shoot video.
^I'm not too keen on videos. I have a comcorder or whatever, bought it 2 years back, and havent used it since. What are the other differences between the 450D, 500D and the 550D?
Right now the 450D works out to INR 34,788. the 550D is INR 43,188. I'm not sure about the price of the 550D.

I wish to know, which camera would be a better deal in terms of quality, durability and usage. I am confused between Nikon D90 & Canon EOS550D. Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm Lens is available for 57000/- & Canon EOS550D with 18-135mm Lens is available for 51000/-.
Now am confused which one is the best buy. Can someone help me in clearing my doubts?

Hi Travelholic.. While I'm no expert to comment on the better equipment between Canon 550D and Nikon D90, I qualify to comment on fact that the 550D, though a plastic build [not magnesium alloy body], it's extremely sturdy and does not seem a flimsy build at all, there is quality in the body. I've had this cam since Sunday and it feels great in the hand, feels solid [I know what solid means, I also handle a heavy magnesium Oly E-20 body].
Durability I'll only know after months/years of usage. For the rest, the experts will pitch in here. Good luck with whatever you end up buying.
