Thanks for the detailed post, I had previously considered the 400 prime but dropped it after going through a few reviews that stressed on the fact that its missing IS. But I am reconsidering it after your post. Personally I don't know how much I will need/miss IS as I have never owned a lens with IS. Secondly I don't know how often I will actually get to shoot anything with a tripod (which is important for a non IS lens?) on Safari Jeeps etc. I prefer something that is handy to carry (both in a bag and with the cam) and use. The last point I want to mention is I might be stuck with a puny 350d body for quite some time still, I don't want big lenses ripping off the mounts etc. :P

What gets me confused is I see a lot of videos on youtube with many serious amateurs/professionals going with a solid smaller mm lens and a TC for wildlife, 70-200 2.8 with 1.7x TC (Nikon), 80-200 2.8 with 2x TC and the 300 f4/L with 1.4X (canon). Since the Canon option of 70-200 2.8 IS with 2x TC is quite expensive I was thinking on settling with the 300 + TC option.

Folks in Hyd, FYI. I visited Reliance digital in the ground floor of Inorbit mall today and out of curiosity checked out the DSLR prices. All prices are for the Kit and standard freebies is the 2GB card. In my opinion they are a bit overpriced and one cannot bargain at such places.

Got the Nikon D3100 this weekend for 30k (bag and 4gb card incl). In addition, bought a UV filter to safe guard the front element of the lens.

^^ I got a SanDisk, class 4 SDHC. Btw, how can we 'check' what class is the memory card, there is no mention of it as such on the packing or the card, just a '4' written in a circle alongside SDHC(different from the capacity one, 4gb)

Congratulations! Welcome to the Nikon club! I have been a Nikon user all my life. I still love my cheap+old D40 with my favorite lense 18-200 VR.

Congrats ! where did you pick it up in chennai ? Iam looking for 550D and Cameraciti looks tad expensive.

Any Indian feedbacks about micro 4/3rds?

Looking at pictures and different exposures at various review sites gives me almost similar picture quality to DSLR but at lesser size/bulk.

Besides, at that price point (~25K) I don't see any Canon or Nikon offering video shooting.

At higher ISOs they have slightly worse noise performance, and very long exposures are usually limited to 4 minutes.
Other than that, they offer more value and are more convenient than normal APS-C cameras.

If you do intend to go for a micro 4/3, I would recommend Panasonic
