Fast AF may not be the top criteria for F1 compared to other sports. In F1, usually you are behind a fence and often the AF latches on to the fence/mesh and not the car, thereby ruining the shot for you. So you typically focus manually at a spot and wait for the car to enter your frame before clicking or focus to infinity and shoot.

PS: I didn't go through the link you gave, just ranting from my experience.

Actually it all depends on how much of the frame the car fills up. If it is 50% or less you can shoot from a relatively long distance with focus at infinity. But if you want larger frame, then you cannot let the fence interfere, additionally you have to use a longer lense. Prefocussing is alright for lateral shots, but a fast autofocus coupled with a high frame rate is the method to get excellent head on shots.

One thing to keep in mind is the shutter lag. You have to practice shots (as suggested by the link) to compensate for the lag, and get a feel of where the moving object will be when the shutter actually fires.

I had once seen a Nikon demo shot series where they were shooting F1 with a D3X at full frame rate. The focus was spot on.

I've watched the videos/sample pics of both the tamron/sigma 18-200 spec lenses on youtube/other sources, but was wondering if someone here can give me a user feedback on them? What i really cannot understand is the difference in prices between these lenses and the Nikkor (minus the better aperture on the nikkor).

You pay more for the following
1. Image stabilisation.
2. Slightly faster lense.
3. Sturdier construction
4. Nikon name

In the film era, the corner sharpness was most apparent shortcoming of less expensive lenses. As the current sensors (barring few full frame sensors) are smaller this may not be very relevant. The only method of determining the quality is to shoot all the three lenses side by side. Hence please refer to any such comparison reviews.

Though modern software can correct most of the aberrations, more expensive lense may require less corrections, resulting in marginally sharper photographs.

@joshguy: No use attending these photography courses till you are yourself at a decent level. What level would you call yourself at Rookie / Amateur / Professional (smirk for the lack of smiley)

Experiment with long exposures. Make sure you use a tripod.

joshguy, I am in the same boat as you!
Heres what I did to get shots like these,

Change the mode to shutter priority and set the exposure to something around 8-10 seconds.
If you don't have a tripod, try keeping the cam on your car's roof or even dashboard.
Use the timer function on your cam to start shooting.

And best of luck! :)

no option in the new classifieds section for a Want to Buy section: is anyone in Delhi wanting to sell a 18-55 IS canon kit lens.

Thanks mate ,will try this today and let you know the result.

BTW the Canon 500D has a ISO of 3200 and site says expandable till 12000 ,how is this done???

Got the new Nikkor 55-300 after a lot of pursuit. Somehow this lens was never in stock to whoever I called here in Chennai.

Finally got it through Smartshoppers here in Chennai. Went through their shop directly instead of the website of theirs. Still experimenting with the lens, the build quality is solid. Kinda heavy for my D3000. But I am loving it. :D

500D has 12800 ISO, but the 12800 ISO is displayed as H, and 6400 ISO is displayed as 6400 only. Keep rotating the dial till you get 6400 and H.

You have to enable the expanded ISO in the custom function menu, then you can select them when setting ISO. They are useful only in emergencies, the shots are extremely grainy.
