frankly, it's like comparing a manual gear bike and an automatic scooter. price is not the only factor in making a choice right? you need to evaluate your needs and make a decision based on that.

Tilt-shift photography is a technique used to create 'miniature' looks of real world. Technically, a very shallow DOF is simulated on a scenery or a wide angle picture so that it looks like it is the photograph of a scaled down version of the real world. You can google for some images to understand.

I have created this effect using PP, but don't know how to achieve this with the lens adjustments. It is called tilt-shift because there are these two types of movements done to simulate this effect.

Tilt - tilting the lens w.r.t. to the image plane
Shift - shifting the lens parallel to the image plane

Here's a picture with tilt-shift effect given using PP (by me) Not so realistic, but hope it gives some idea.

@amit, sorry if that has hurt you. i was reflecting on my thoughts. i have decided to go in for the 55-250 IS, in the long end, if i am using a tripod, which i am planning to buy, i shall just turn the IS off. i hope the 250mm range is good enough though. that is a major concern.

the speedlite 270EX is going for some where aroung 6k at smartshoppers, is that a good price?

picking up the 55-250 for 10500 with B&W.

lol: why should it hurt me I am not Sigma distributor, Just stated the facts its a 50mm vs IS choice and choice is yours. Since you are inclined to 55-250 IS you should go ahead and buy that's all.

both prices are fair. The 270X is a compact flash - killer for a G11 user for example where a 430 or 580 would be too much flash on too small a camera. If you can afford it get the 430 but the 270 is not a bad flash and excellent VFM.

Finally I am compromising between D60 (present body) and D300s (my wishlist DSLR since 2 months) to a D90 as of now. The reasons are below:

1) D90 prices have come down (body is varying between 34 to 36 since 2 months)
2) Features are almost the same to D300 and D300s with few exceptions
3) Nikon has stopped D300 and might do the same with D300s too, hint through reliable importers.
4) My needs of a new body is all met by D90
5) Not worth spending more money as I dont have any commercial plans
6) A daily carry around purpose is more practical with D90 than other heavy bodies

Now the decision almost made and waiting for the store pick up, I would like to know from other D90 users here, what memory card do you guys use ? I shoot RAW 90% of the time and a single day photo outing scores above 300 RAW images on an average. Since D90 has video, I think a 4GB card may not be enough, so waiting for some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I use "SanDisk 8 GB Extreme III (SDHC) Memory Card". Costs around $30

Presently my bag has Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, Nikon 35mm f/1.8, Nikon 70-300 VR and Tamron 90 f/2.8. Hope thats enough for a life-time !!:thumbs up

Yes I use class 6. You really need fast card like this for continuous shots.

Don't you have plans for a wide lens (like Tokina 11-16mm)?

So far never thought of a wide lens may be because I havent used the 18mm itself to its full potential. I am sure my present bag can keep me busy for an year or more.

Buy a 16 GB class 6 , or 32 GB class 6 , If you are not concerned with brand you can go for "Silicon Power" and buy it on e-bay.

Congratulations. D90 is a fantastic camera!! I have been advocating people(who are buying a DSLR for photography!!) for the last two months or so as the prices have come down. Its fast at auto-focus, bigger viewfinder (penta-prism!!), built-in AF motor and yeah the video option in it!!! Congratulations once again.

Clevermax, yes your image pretty much displayed how the Tilt-Shift works. They all seem like miniature images. Very 'wow' types.


One other question then. What kind of photographers, or for what kind of photography would tilt-shift lenses be used. What application has use of miniature like photos? Advertising? What else?

Edit: I just thought; Tilt-Shift lenses are used for architectural photography, perhaps? But then, would the miniature like photos actually be useful?

I'd suggest that you stick with the same body and buy the lens now.

I don't think tilt-shift photography is of much use in architectural photography, They show very shallow DOF anyway, so may be most of the structure won't be in perfect focus at all. For me, they are interesting to see, and some has that wow factor, that's it. They may be good for some fancy ad stuff by the way..
