@nileshch : Table is funny indeed , As per this 20gm weight matters but rest everything matters only to Pros lol:.
@ranjith : D3100 has following serious limitiations
1. No AF motor so you can not take advantage of cheaper lenses You know about it but In case of Higher Nikons ( D90) you can use them and same money in long run. In case of Canons all lens have AF motor and pricing is not sky high for AF lens.
2. D3100 does not have DOF preview button , This button has serious use in macros ( not actually for previeing but reversing)
3. If you are going for strobing setup then D3100 can not have master mode flash ( D90 has it and it is not that costly now).
IMHO will repeat again like broken record go if budget is limited look for a used D90 or Canon 550D or budget is strictly a problem and you want new then 500D .
About low nosie output have no worry up to ISO 1600 All the modern bodies are quite usable and Nikons are good in low light.
For ISO 3200 Canon 550D as 500D will give grains on ISO 3200 but this is not a serious limitation becuase in most scenarios you will use till ISO1600 at the max.

Thanks for you update Remington & lightening. My budget is a stick 30K for the camera + 18-55 mm lens. So my best fit is D3100. I see the difference is resolution 14 (D3100) - 18 (5100/550D), Continuous Shooting 3fps (D3100) - 3.7 fps (5100/550D) & video - yes autofocus (D3100)- no autofocus (550D). I happy with this feature of D3100.
On question here, Do you think there might be a huge difference in the photo output/noise of D3100 compared to D5100/550D? |
D3100 is a very good Camera for a Start (I am on a Nikon D60 for the past two years and its been a great learning platform). Looking for an upgrade now.
If you research, all cameras will have some good habits and some bad habits. Pick the one which lists most of your requirements as its good habits.
All the best. Do keep us updated on your purchase.
:thumbs up

Uh-oh, that's an oversight from me. What I had meant was weight in general matters to the newbie. 20 grams ofcourse does not matter :)

Shaju: Surprised to hear that you are contemplating moving to the Canon club. Actually I was thinking on the same lines as well on account of Canon's portfolio of telephotos. |
To avoid any confusion, my thoughts were based on moving to a full frame body. There is a huge saving on Canon if one is comparing the following:
1) Nikon D700, 12-24, 24-70, 70-200 and a 50mm 1.4
2) Canon 5D M-II, 12-24, 24-70, 70-200 and a 50mm 1.4
Other than a better higher ISO performance, I cant justify the Nikon for a higher weight on my wallet. Its purely an end-user opinion, dont connect it too much on the technical view point. According to my short listed interest lines, I should be happy with a 12-24, 50mm and 70-200 that covers all my hobby needs. :thumbs up

Small question, since when has canon started producing a 12-24?
The only 12-24 which is for FF bodies in canon land is probably the Sigma 12-24
Sorry, I am not a Canon guy so far, so what I meant could be EF 16-35mm f/2.8 or you can even put EF-S 10-22mm to fill that gap ! Now someone might say the latter is for cropped sensors :) I am not sure, but hope you got the point what I meant about the affordability.
If you are moving to FF
All you need is
24-105 f/4L IS for walkabouts
Sigma 12-24 as ultrawide
And 70-200 F4 L IS or the 100-400L for telephoto
Yes, thats true Tanveer, that would be an awesome combination under 2 lakhs. One of my friends has gone to Andaman last week carrying the same, I am waiting for him to come back to see the magic he is doing with that combo. He added a CPL and couple of ND filters to his back pack before travelling, and a Manfrotto tripod not to mention.
Anyway these are just homework for deciding between a DX vs FX. I am not yet completely convinced on the excess cost involved in this transfer purely for hobby. Waiting to see if Nat Geo or Discovery will take me as an apprentice :D
When I compared D3100 with respect to 550d, I have watched some videos in youtube, which was taken using D3100 with autofocus.. but I found an issue there with the auto focus, the entire video has the lens moving sound..which is not soo good for your ears and there is no way to pause this auto focus facility...
Canon 550d also will do autofocus..but not as countinous as D3100. But the built in autofocus motor, external mic facility , body quality an all helped me to fix 550d as my companion..
I have visited showrooms like reliance digital, croma, gkvale etc and have tried both of this cameras in each hand...
now the latest price of canon 550d is around 34k and D3100 is 32k.. for 2K canon 550d is the winner..as per me...
Finally after thinking of almost 2 months whether to buy or not, today I ordered Hoya CPL Pro1 82mm for my 16-35 L lens. Thrusday I am going to Italy on holiday, looking forward to have some good photography.

Built in AF motor? 550D has no built in motor. Canon lenses have motors.
USM motors make much lower noise(but USM lenses are expensive).

I have the exact combination. You get a great coverage from 12-400mm with 3 lenses. With a 1.4X converter it extends to 560mm. Its a killer combination even on a croped sensor body!
