Since you are in Bangalore, why dont you contact Jayesh, PhotoCircle. I think you will get a better deal than this. VC is not at all required for a 50mm lens distance, in photography, its a basic requirement to study the art of stabilizing your hand.

You cannot shoot a good photograph from a moving vehicle. So you need not worry too much about the quality of such a shot in any case ;-)

I placed the order late last night and the Flipkart guy called me at 10am from my office reception. I hadn't even reached office by then. I'm amazed at their delivery time.

It seems the good days are gone, I got it for a good discount compared to the others in the market around 3 or 4 years back.

Congrats. Make sure you test the lens focus and calibration with the help of a focus test pattern, it should be perfect and sharp for a good copy.

Congrats. I can feel the excitement !! As our friend mentioned, vibration control should not bother you with such a light lens. To be absolutely certain and eliminate all risks shoot with shutter speed priority, keeping it at around 500 (assuming you will be driving in good sun). At that speed it is more stable than any tripod.

Regarding lens quality, I haven't used this lens before. I have the Tamron 90mm macro. It's a bloody good lens. In fact if your results are good, I might go for it in future. Ever since going full frame I often feel the need for a 50 mm lens.

how is Canon Eos1200d when compared to Nikon 5200 or 5300. I know 5200/5200 are midrange but then for a beginner, how good would be the canon one ?

I think compared the two, 5200 would be better. In Canon, if you plan to be into serious learning mode, I suggest you should start with 600/650/700D.

Thanks Ampere. Just to know more, what major feature is missing in 1200d but present in nikon 5200 ?

Does this difference justify the price difference between the same ?

As of now, could see flipkart selling 1200d at 29k (includes 2 lenses, 18-55 and 55-250mm), which I am unable to find in other models and hence am too tempted to go for this but then at the same, don't want to buy an obsolete/outdated product,hence the queries.

Canon 1xxxD series is comparable to Nikon 3xxx series. Canon 3 digit series are usually compared to 5xxx series. I don't know about above models, as my budget ends there :)

I will say if you have budget, go a step up for D5200. It will be about 10k costlier for similar combo, and you will feel the difference when you hold both cams in hand. Go visit an actual store and get a feel before ordering simply on specs.

I think @Ani sums it up. To add to it, 5200, has larger sensor, better cross focus, more dynamic range.

As a beginner, this combination would be ideal

1. Mid range Camera (Nikon D5200/5300 or Canon 700D/650D) with 18-55 Kit lens
2. 35/50mm Prime lens (Nikon 35mm costs 7k, I think there would be similar lens in Canon too) OR
250-300mm lens if birds/wildlife is primary use
3. Canon/Nikon photography courses (cost less than 2k, are on weekends)

With Prime lens, one really appreciates depth of field and composition.
With mid range cameras, you can change all optical parameters (ISO/Shutter/Shutter burst modes/Aperture/Focus modes etc) without taking eyes off viewfinder. These camera will have better autofocus systems, higher dynamic range and better metering systems too.

If you can spend up to 40-50k, I would suggest D5300 / 700D with prime lens.

If budget is limited to 30 - 40k, Duel lens kit of 1200D or D3300 + prime are good choices. But these would be constrained in tricky situations due to poorer autofocus and poor low light performance (in case of Canon 1200D).

And like Car, accessories will cost too (Camera Bag, Tripod, Filters to begin with) ;)

Get hold of an experienced photographer and with his help get a used Pro level DSLR. Check the listing in jjmehta.com

An old Pro level DSLR with say 60-70k shutter count is anyday better than a brand new semi-pro or entry level DSLR.

And its a myth in statements such as 'I am a beginner and I dont need such hi-fi features' . There is no feature called as hi-fi feature which cannot be used by a beginner.

E.g. low noise at high ISO, easy access to button for quick settings, fast shutter (1/8000), high number of focus points, 100% viewfinder coverage etc. is something which is more needed by a newcomer than an experienced photographer. An experienced photographer knows how to fool a 'bad' camera to take 'good' pictures, a skill which beginner needs time to build upon.
