The below picture was taken with the central single AF point on the head. In the output picture, the head is not sharp as you may find. |
The focusing is off. The depth of field will be shallow, and you were focusing on plane of the wing/legs etc. It could be due to user error or AF calibration error.
What focus mode were you using?
Did you try manual focusing?
Worst case - if AF adjustment/correction doesn't work out - take it to the Nikon workshop and get the focusing corrected.

Can this not be solved by manually focussing on the head and narrower aperture? |

Aperture priority with single AF point which was placed exactly at the face. But the camera seemed to focus a bit behind and that is my worry.
No I didn’t try manual focus as I wanted the AF to work the way it should.
Will try clicking some more with AF-fine tuning and also manually this weekend and revert.
Team, the upgrade bug has bitten me. I am currently using a Canon Prosumer SX10 IS. Want to upgrade to an entry level DSLR . Have shortlisted Nikon D3300 and Canon 1200D.Nikon comes with single lens while canon has a double lens kit offer going on. Need guidance in choosing the Nikon :) . Also is it ok to buy it from flipkart (30k), ebay is (27k) and stores are selling for 35k in my city.
@Inder -
1. Check if Ebay sellers are authorised sellers - Check with Nikon, not with seller
2. Ani.sh George (check on FB) if you want a seller with good pricing
3. if Nikon, check D5200 vs D3300.
4. Canon seems to have a simpler line up of lenses. Either way, go to a store & Check the gadgets physically for which one you find comfortable.
If possible, look at canon xxx series (3 digits) or Nikon 5xxx series. A step above basic ones, and should keep you happy for quite some time.
Perfectly ok to buy from amazon/flipkart. you will get much better price as well. In fact on paytm, you can get good amount of cashback on dslrs.
Not sure about ebay but sites like flipcart etc are not carrying authorized warranty, read carefully all are sellers warranty which is waste, buying from authorized dealer is better specially for these costly cameras.
Recently i picked Nikon D5300, hunt is on for micro, wide angle and better zoom lenses.

I have purchased D5300 DSLR + 4 lens from Flipkart (WS Retail). Never had any trouble registering those products with Nikon. Products come with official Nikon India warranty cards.
From the D5300 page on Flipkart:
Quote:
Warranty Summary : 2 year Nikon India Warranty and Free Transit Insurance.

As they say, you not only buy a camera but you also buy the ecosystem.
So first you should decide which ecosystem do you prefer, Canon or Nikon. At the end of the day you wont go wrong with any.
Both have a long list of lenses available. By default, Canons have more vibrant colors, depends on what you prefer.
I use a Canon 5D Mark 3, a Nikon D5200, Nikon D600 and also Sony A7S and A6000. So I am well aware of how each of them works.
I would suggest you to strongly stay away from the kit lenses, 18-55, 55-250 etc etc, these have variable apertures at different focal lengths and the widest aperture value is also not too great, will be useless in low light
Try to buy just the body and f1.8 aperture lens, will be good for portraits, will help you immensely in low light. Quality wise they are good too. One such example is Nikon/Canon 50mm f1.8, price around 7k.
Sorry if my long post has confused you, just wanted to help :D
I would suggest you to consider only flipkart, that is what I prefer, seller should be "ws retail". They replace them easily if you find any fault in the first 1-2 days of use.

1. My experience is slightly different. I bought D3300 and got a receipt from a shop in Varanasi, which was authorised Nikon seller.
2. My 35mm F1.8DX came from a different seller. Both these were registered on the Nikon Web site without any problem.
3. Regarding kit 18-55 VR-II lense. This is one of the lightest and sharpest Nikon has produced. At higher apertures, the sharpness on D3300 is same as that for 35mm or 50mm prime. So do not discount this lense.
In my opinion at this level, Nikon has a slight edge over Canon, primarily due to better sensor and more AF points. At higher end, if you want fast burst rate (10fps) and more AF points for sports shooting Canon's new 7D-II is the best VFM. Nikon D4s is marginally better, but it is FF and 4 times as expensive.
My advise would be to get the D3300 with its kit lense only. Go after another lense only after a few months shooting with the kit lense. By then you will get an idea of what you want and what sort of images (hence lenses) you want.

I have one question though, have you used a tripod or was it handheld? There might be back focusing issue but to confirm it first place the camera on a tripod and try to shoot something where you can check the focus easily. A scale or a even a piece of printed paper would work. Shoot at an angle of say 45 degree so that you can see the dof variation. There will be focus checking charts available on the net which you can take a print out and do the test.

I think we very easily discard the kit lenses. They are not as bad as they are being made out to be. Stopping down they would give much better result many times. And most of the time people do shoot stopping down. Also about low-light, why would it be useless at low light? For example, if one is shooting Landscapes(or cityscapes/seascapes/star trails/light trails etc) at low-light with a tripod then what problem can a kit lens can cause to render it useless? Would be very interested to know.
BTW, I do agree with trying a 1.8 type of lens and enjoy those out of focus background/foreground stuff.
Regards,

In addition what has been written already, I will play devil's advocate and tell you first, are you sure this is what you want ?
A DSLR is big, heavy and expensive - you'll have to keep a constant eye on it whenever you take it out, which will be mainly on planned vacations or shooting trips. At any other time, it's too bulky to carry around perennially, hence you won't carry it around - and they the best camera is the one you have with you. A DSLR, you'll end up leaving at home most of the time.
Too big to carry with every time you leave the house = no camera for that in promptu click, or that chance sighting of supercar - you get the idea.
If you're more of a casual, social shooter, who shoots in public areas, mostly people at close range, an advanced compact like Sony RX100 would be a better fit. You may not get the DSLR quality, but chances are you'll be 10 times more inclined to carry it with you, whenever you leave the house.
And some long but interesting reading:

@Inder, further points:
When you have shortlisted,
List out the features. Ask what you will use. Then decide
* Some features like a good sensor - we use it with every shot
* Some features like high fps - will you use it ? ( I dont, so it is not important for me)
* Some features like bracketing - I may use it sometime. More likely for me than a high fps. THis feature helped me pick the d5xxx over the d3300 / d3xxx.
So find what you would be feature set - and hence the suitable camera for you .
Since I already own a Prosumer I wont find a DSLR bulky. Besides for on the spur photos you always have your cellphone which are getting more and more advanced as far as cameras are concerned.
I am not satisied with the low light performance of my prosumer as well as the shutter response. Hence I plan to upgrade to a DSLR.
Mostly it shall be the D3300.

Performed a “back focus” test with my Nikon D7000. In all, the central single AF point was on the 3rd cell. The first two were shot handheld and on a ball-head tripod with the 150-500. I am happy that the Nikon body is not at fault but the Sigma 150-500mm.
- Now with the 150-500 Sigma without any Fine tune
- 150-500 after fine tuned at +20 [maximum]. A slight improvement visible.
With the first two lenses, the focus was spot on as seen in pictures, but the Sigma 150-500 disappoints. It is simply is not sharp.:Frustrati
Will be sending the Lens to Sigma @Shanghai in a week time. The dealer says about a month duration for the repair.

Most of the time the issue would be with the lens only, not the body. And it's a common issue. Let Sigma come back to you with a properly adjusted lens. Wish they could've fixed it here and give it back soon.
