Re: The DSLR Thread

Agree with Nilanjan about the flexibility part of these two types of lenses. But the price tag difference is quite a bit. The 24-120 is expected to give better IQ with a little more range, but loses out at the wide end for range.

@Petrol_power could try combinations like 16-85 + 70-300 VR.
Or a 17-70 Sigma + 70-300 VR

I second that.
If you haven't explored all the options with your kit lens, any lens that you buy wouldn't make a difference.
200-500mm lens with a cropped sensor is not a walk around lens. You will need to frequently change lenses if you carry that for a trip.
My suggestion is to explore all the options available with your current kit, understand what type of photography you enjoy and then zero in on a lens. You can also rent out these lenses, use them and decide.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Shot these @700 mm f8 with 200-500 f5.6 on a 14EIII handheld. In very good lights, there appears NO difference in AF acquisition and speed, with and without TC. But the number of keepers in terms of sharpness is understandably less with TC, especially with moving subjects. I would blame it on me rather than the focus accuracy at this point of time. I am yet to fine tune it to perfection though.

Update:
  • Ordered Nikon D3300 with 18-55mm kit lens from Flipkart. Expected to come with 8GB card and camera bag.
  • Ordered one Hoya 52mm UV filter as suggested.
  • Downloaded Nikon Capture NX-D and ViewNX-i software.
  • Started reading up on some basics.
Now the wait begins

Re: The DSLR Thread

Hello Bhpians,

I have used a friend's Nikon entry level DSLR for two of my trips and would like to buy one. Going through loads of reviews and the DSLR thread, I have made my mind to go for Canon 700D having my budget fixed at INR 45000.

Canon 700D with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens and Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens is around INR 36000 on online sites like Amazon, flipkart and snapdeal.

Dilemmas:

1. Is canon 700D ok for a novice like me?
2. Is it safe to buy through e commerce sites like Amazon and flipkart?

You need to check with Canon about that. Usually they have this information on their site.

Nikon doesn't provide warranty support if you buy from Amazon or Flipkart. They won't even touch your camera/lens even if you are willing to pay.

Canon 700D is an excellent beginner kit. Will you be doing wildlife or birding? If not, I would suggest you go for 18-135 or 18-200 lens instead, you will enjoy not having to switch lenses & being able to take much wider range of pics.

Look for "Amazon Fulfilled" & make sure its manufacturer warranty. Should have no problems then. As soon as you get it, try to register it on the Canon website. If you cannot, just return it. I trust Flipkart & Snapdeal less for no-questions-asked returns due to negative experiences.

This cant be true. I know people who have bought Nikon cameras online, as long as the seller sells it with manufacturer warranty, it cant be refused. Same with Canon. jjmehta.com is another good place to buy online.

I will be doing most of the use to capture my travels. Core wildlife or core birding is not my cup of tea. To be precis, my area of usage is a mixture of all viz., people, landscape, streets etc

Then I think Canon 700D kit with 18-135 IS STM lens will work better for you, you can capture both stills & video during travel, a good all-rounder. Make sure to buy a fast class 10 SD card.

Suggestions appreciated. Went to few authorized canon dealers in Mysore. Surprisingly prices are similar to the one in online.

For a Canon 700D, 18-55, 55-250mm lens combo pack below are the offered prices

Canon Authorized Dealer - INR 36500
Amazon - INR 36399
Flipkart - INR 35675
Snapdeal - INR 35375

For a Canon 700D, 18 - 135 IS STM lens, Dealer quoted price is ~INR 61000

Owing to such a huge price difference, I prefer going for Canon 700D, 18-55, 55-250mm lens combo pack.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Processed an old photo from 2012. This was taken with a Nikon D90; that camera was good for its time.

I always had better luck (in terms of peak and tiger sightings) with that camera. Sigh.
