I got a Tata Indicom Walky with a built in modem...and man that thing is SLOWWWWWW. Anyways I'll be moving shortly to another house and will hopefully get a better internet connection..
got a tata indicom 512kbps... test speed shows a 230 kbps
have a asianet cable net 256kpbs connection.but i regularly get 400+ speeds(45-50kBps).i've checked it out at different speed test sites and most of them show between 380 and 420.donno why.anybody has some answers??

So therefore as i was saying, wouldnt your actual data recieved and written to disk be less than the data transfered?
For example
128kbps connection; if /8 =16KB/s which is not the actual speed you are getting your file on disk.
whereas if /10 = 12.8KB/s which is the actual speed your data is being written.
What i mean to say is, in theory a 128KB file will download on a 128kbps connection in 10 seconds and not 8.
And the kbps is the way the ISPs etc market it to you, counting the CRC bits as dataflow (naturally), making it sound faster.
What say?

Are you sure this speed test is accurate? A quick test on my office link shows 88.5 Kbps. This is total nonsense. Our internet link is a whopping 16 Mbps. I sometimes touch close to the max possible of 2MB per second on downloads during off-peak hours!!!
Another test run at
http://www.dslreports.com/stest shows these figures: Download 1352 Kbps and upload 772 Kbps. This is closer to the truth considering there are more than 150 simultaneous users on the internet and the usage is pretty heavy.
