Re: Which Anti-virus software do you use ?

I have used Kaspersky internet security paid version. For temporary leaning of Hardisk and Computer/laptop you may use the trial version.

I have used it for last 10 years. Following are the reasons/comparision:

1. Compared to norton it requires lower computing power resulting lower load on the PC components while giving similar protection level in real world scenario.
2. Windows defender sometimes identify cracks as virus and blocks/removes it while kaspersky’s detection is far superior and accurate.
3. Many a times windows defender does not detect malware while browsing website which kaspersky actively detects and blocks.
4. Any External HDD can be seamlessly used and you don’t require to fully scan the HDD. Kaspersky automatically blocks the virus/malware if it tries to enter the PC.
5. Scanning and deleting virus in HDD or Pendrive may seem the files are delete but that is not the case. Personal files will remain in the storage and you may use CMD to access those files. Formatting will lead to loss of files.

Cracked files usually contain viruses, of course. If Windows Defender detects them, but Kaspersky does not, it might be because Kaspersky is missing the signature for it.

Any recommendation for light-weight and decent AV for MacOS?

MacOS being Unix based does not require an anti Virus. Make sure to avoid any 'third party' apps.

Another point is the Day 0 vulnerability, which is the bane of all OS's.

Re: Which Anti-virus software do you use ?

None for Mac and Windows Defender for Windows have worked perfectly for me for the last 14 years. I use good caution while installing softwares and surfing the web and make sure my system is always upto date.

While following the above I have downloaded alot of torrents (from usual trusted sources) and never had any issue with viruses or my system getting affected.

I have been using QuickHeal Total Security since last 2 years. It is good at identifing malicious files. But it is resource heavy. I also keep Windows Defender on along with QuickHeal.

Using ESET(NOD 32) for more than 12 years and satisfied. I buy for 3 comp for 3 years and works out economical as well. Does not allow opening dangerous sites.

Re: Which Anti-virus software do you use ?

If you are a careful user like me Windows Defender will do take care. Before all these first uninstall chrome and switch to Brave browser. It's chrome minus (UI is similar to chrome) all the bloat and other tracking galore. I only use Brave even in my Android phone. But if you use an Android you have given it all mostly already. Finally do not visit sketchy sites or do not click on links that entice you with unbelievable offers. You should be safe mostly.

Re: Which Anti-virus software do you use ?

1. Windows Defender is always on
2. Genuine Windows installed, regular updates done
3. Minimal/almost no use of USB stick
4. Google Chrome replaced by Brave & Duck Duck Go
5. No knocks on the doors of hanky panky websites

Been working fine for the past five years (touchwood) on three personal laptops and for three years on thirty computers at my workplace.

The last time I paid for an antivirus was probably in 2015-16 or so.

Re: Which Anti-virus software do you use ?

Was on Kaspersky, then McAfee and recently moved to Norton. Norton seems to be trying to do some unnecessary stuff which I need to customize. The earlier two did their job quietly in the background, with nary a pop up.

Reboot the machine into windows once the external drive has been cleared
Downloaded and booted from the rescue disk. However I see only the scan for security threats - both full and quick. I have no option to scan the hard disk. Any pointers to scan and manually remove the files?

Kaspersky guy here. Of all the mainstream AVs on offer, this one seems to do its job whilst also being less resource hungry. The icing on the cake is its free 300 MB VPN daily offer for all my torrent needs

Connect the hard disk after booting from rescue disk and then select full scan. It will then scan everything on your computer, including your external hard drive
