Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

Nice thread - brings back the good ol' days when phones were dumb and humans were smart. No offence to anybody

I actually started my journey with a smartphone during its age.

1. 2008: Inherited from dad - Blackberry 7100t. 13 year old me didn't care about anything except a game called Brickbreaker. The phone was on it's last legs and lasted 6 months.
Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-bb7100t_00.jpg
2. 2009: Interited from mom - Moto Flip W220. Put this into the washing machine after a year

3. 2010: Spare phone (used again) from dad's office - Nokia 6070 which was my first phone with a camera
Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-nokia607000.jpg
4. 2011: First new phone after finishing 10th exams - Sony Ericsson Elm - it had GPS, a 5MP camera, multi tasking, and some cool carbon footprint calculator

5. 2013: Got this from dad when I started my undergrad - a used Gold Nokia E72 which had WhatsApp and lasted 6 months

And then I jumped into the smartphone world in 2014 with a gift for the New Year - Nokia Lumia 520 with Windows Phone OS

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I got on the mobile phone bandwagon very early. My first phone was acquired in 1998 (work-provided) - an Alcatel One Touch. But within the company the slightly more recent Nokia 6110 had much higher demand, yet I was able to pull some strings and get one of those for myself quickly (1999). From then onwards I replaced primary phones once every two years like clockwork - breaking the chain only in 2019 when I didn't buy any; instead waiting till Feb 2020 to pick up my current Asus Rog Phone II.

I have had a few work-provided phones too; I'm one of those who carry multiple phones.

I think it was with the Nokia 3310 I entered the WAP age. With the 6100 GPRS came in. Blackberry 8700 ushered the push mail system but the overall dissatisfaction with the work-provided, heavily protected Blackberry resulted in me splurging big money to buy a Sony Ericsson P990i back in 2007. This was the first Symbian phone I had; and the next Nokia E71 with its Ovi system was total wow! then. The N900 brought in a full Linux phone (I could ssh into it, run a webserver etc.) and I think it was the first phone that I owned which could do turn-by-turn navigation with GPS. Android era started badly with a Samsung S2 whose UI I hated; but the subsequent Nexus 5 made me an Android fan forever.

As someone who worked in mobile app development I have used many other phones and tablets for short durations (iPhones/iPads, Galaxy Tabs, cheap/entry-level phones from brands like Karbonn, even an x86 phone from Lenovo) - usually for UAT. I can't even count them all.

I have collected pics of most of the phones I have owned (usually downloaded from gsmarena; in some cases wikipedia or general google search). A couple are missing - most notably a Nokia 1xxx series extremely basic feature phone that a relative brought in from Kuwait (it wasn't launched in India apparently). The collection is here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PJN8wdAwH9F3HK8u6

As per the thread title, I Will stick to older non-smart phones. It's a long list.

I don't remember the order I got them in I put them brand-wise. And I am sure I am still forgetting few of them.

Some of them, I bought to use as 2nd/3rd phone for a short period, or Nokia 6235 for netconnect only.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

My first phone was Siemens , don't remember the model though. It was given by dad in which only incoming was active and outgoing was barred. As I progressed with the gadgets recall using all that Nokia had to offer. My most loved ones being the communicators which was passed from dad again when he used to upgrade his. The 9110, 9210 then the 9210i to 9310i and the last in this league was the E90. They never make anything like them anymore. From all my previous phones I just have one left which is a Haier pen phone still intact in it's jewel case.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

After replacing the screen on my stupid 'big screen' smartphone twice(!) last year while on trekks, went 'back' to the new 'old-style' Nokia 3310 and man I love it!

Switched the sim to this phone and anytime I'm out now, I use this phone. The smartphone stays at home for use only with wifi. Love how this 3310 fits peacefully in my pocket without me having to worry about stressing it when I sit down or ride a bike. Love how I don't care if it falls down, gets wet in the rain, or if someone will steal it (I doubt anyone will anyway ). Bit inconvenient to not have Gmaps and a good camera, but those are the only disadvantages. I was never a person who checked mail on the phone anyway. Significant reduction in time spent on Whatsapp and Insta, an additional bonus! And perhaps it's psychological but I think the saying 'the cheaper the phone, the better the signal' seems to be true!

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

Pretty ironic to see some of yesteryear's smartphones now being categorized as non-smartphones. Phones like 6600, Nokie E71, E72 etc were smartphones with Symbian S60 OS. They even had full background multitasking abilities, which even now iPhone and Android haven't been able to replicate.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I am an old hog that takes a long to understand the functions of Mobile Phone and use them. So try to stick to some phones only, though some actually goes in double figure.
Not repeating the same phones which most of you have mentioned and shown, I would like to add one from my collection.

Nokia Navigator (6110)

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-20200729_102401.jpg

The phone had GPS and came with Pre-loaded maps for the region, it was sold in. It was called by its name 'Navigator' only, rather than its model number.

The old phones of Nokia lacked horsepower of today's phones but did all essential services including applications with real multi-tasking. I still miss my E71, E72 , E6 or my first real camera phone with xenon flash Sony C905. Both Google and Apple have used there financial muscle and illegimate ways to bribe application developers to wipe out Nokia, Blackberry , Palm etc. I am still using a Blackberry Passport silver edition and it is a great conversation starter in any meeting. Hope we can have golden days back where phone was about expression and the feel of flaps , sliders ...miss them.

The big miss in S60 was lack of touchscreen support. So they had to either provision a physical keypad (reducing screen size by that much) or go through some contortions. I remember reading that a version of S60 was planned to have it, but Nokia pulled the plug and threw their weight under the Maemo platform.

The applications catalogue we can assume would have organically evolved had the platforms stuck around.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I got my first phone when I went to college in a differet state. It was a Motorola Rizr z3, which I used from 2008- 2010. This phone met a sad end when my brother dropped it in an oil barrel.

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-motorola-rizr-z3.jpg

Then I exchanged it with my brother's Nokia Xpressmusic and used till 2011. This phone met its end when I accidentally dropped it in the sink.

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-nokia-xpressmusic.jpeg

I got a replacement phone, a used Nokia C500 from my uncle. And used it till 2012 when some bug crashed the os/software.I don't know what exactly happened but the screen went blank and it became unresponsive.

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-noika-c500.jpeg

Again the used route, from a cousin, the Sony Ericsson Walkman series phone. I lost its charger on a train journey and then stopped using it. This was in 2013.

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-sony-ericsson-walkman.jpeg

As a stopgap I was using a discarded Nokia 1600, again a hand me down one. Used it for about 2-3 months.

Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears-nokia-1600.jpeg

Seeing my plight my cousin gave me his iPhone 3GS when he switched to Samsung Galaxy and I used it for the period 2013- 2015.

There was a Coolpad Note 3 which I bought with my hard earned money ('my' first phone) which I used till 2018, till I lost it along with my wallet. Funny story, I placed them on top of my car while attending to my kid and then drove off without taking it inside.

Currently I'm using a Vivo Y83 since 2018.
While writing this, I realised that I have gone through a lot of phones, as per my standards.

P.S. - All pictures taken from internet.

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

oh! so many memories

I had a very long list of feature/dumb phones in my past.
2001-2002: bought a 2nd hand Nokia 3210 from Hyd koti street, when I went for Hyderabad trip with some friends of my engineering college. Took a Spice mobile connection with incoming costing some 1 rupee per minute, the cheapest I guess
2003-2005: my first brand new mobile, Motorola c350, color screen and polyphonic ringtone. Very very small keypad, not for sms'ing. I guess that trauma stayed till date, I don't like to text much.

2006: Sony w300i, my first walkman serise, it went kaput on a rainy day within a year, it was a sad day

2006: Samsung E2550, IIRC, don't remember the exact model now, because the music was so pathetic after having a walkman phone, I sold it within 7 days.

2006-2007: Sony w302i (or something similar), after disastrous Samsung slider, I had to go for a walkman phone

2007: I lost my Sony and settled for Samsung slim phone for 2-3 months, don't remember the model no, but it was advertised as slimest phone, a very basic one

2007-2008: Sony w580i, again back to sony

2008-2009: This is sort of smart phone, HTC touch 3G, a windows phone. Had a camera; which I used, may be, 10 times. First use of touchscreen, a pathetic one, but it was cool for that time

then after all are android phone, from Android 1.6 till date Android 10: in order - Sony Xperia x10, Sony Xperia Sola, Mi 3, Nexus 5x, Oneplus 3T and currently Samsung Galaxy S9.

Out of all these, best experience I had or am having -
Sony w300i for the flip and the sound quality while playing music,
Sony Xperia x10 for its shear elegance that time, capacitive touch and music of course. Introduction of maps and other apps in Google store, it was mind blowing in every sense
Nexus 5x only for its camera
Oneplus 3t for its smooth oxygen OS, near stock android experience and camera
and current Samsung Galaxy S9 for its form factor, size, screen, features

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I have owned only 6 feature phones. I loved small clam shell phones, still miss them in this era of giant smartphones.

1998-2000 Motorola Brick (which model, who cares, who remembers...)
2000-2004 - Samsung SGH-8500 (had to stop using since I switched countries)
2004-2004 - Samsung E715 (just 8 months, dropped it by accident)
2004-2006 - Samsung E600 (Retired after 2 years)
2006-2007 - Nokia N73 (A mistake, too big for me, wrong form factor for me)
2007-2008 - Sony Ericsson Z550i (Back to clam shell and happy)

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

My list:

The first phone we got was the Nokia 3310 in 2000.

1) Nokia 1100: the "buri nazar wale tera muh kala, isiliye is mein torchlight dala" phone. Used it through engineering.

2) Motorola Razr2 V8: the sexiest phone I've owned till date. What a pretty design! Several people back then offered to trade their iPhone 3/3GS for this. Used it for three years but then battery life made it unusable and we preferred to get a new phone than replace battery.

I got my first phone in '05 and by '10, smart phones were routine so got me one of those. (HTC Windows phone)

Re: Tell us about your older non-smart, non-iPhones from the yesteryears

I haven’t kept all my phones that I have used in the past as the resale value used to help me upgrade to a new one

But have managed to retain most of the phones I have used since 2008.

Some pictures

This one belonged to my cousin who was going to discard it back then and I kept it with me as my first phone was a Sony Ericsson T100.
