Extended charging I'm not sure but I'm sure you wont leave it connected overnight with the PC on.

My ipod takes around an hour and a half. after that I remove it and listen to it connected to the car deck via aux.

3hrs is pretty ok.

Got a Creative Zen V plus 2GB. Happy with it, Cost about 100USD at best buy store. Checked with dealers here to find its more expensive here. The only issue is that it uses software to transfer files. Not USB based, not plug and transfer.
The earphones could have been better. The FM plays cool. Still need to get a travel charger for this. Thanks to all for helping me with this decision.

It doesn't damage iPOD and it sure won't damage your USB
for iPod here is Apple FAQs

Question #7

Quote:
Question: Should I leave iPod connected to the charger or in the dock whenever I'm not using it?
Answer: The battery stops charging when it's full. Leaving it connected won't charge it any more. It's perfectly OK to leave it connected so it can charge overnight, for example
