Battery Charger & Rechargeable batteries

My Kodak digital camera works on AA batteries. I hardly use
the camera so I was just using regular Duracell Alkaline batteries
till now. Now I need AAA batteries regularly for a different gadget
so I am thinking of getting a battery charger & rechargable batteries.
I was wondering if it's possible to get a charger which charges both
AAA & AA batteries. If yes, what brand of charger & brand of rechargeble
batteries are good value for money.

I can buy 90 duracell batteries for this price. It will take me a
really long time to run through 90 batteries - i won't break even
the cost of the chargers. Are all chargers so expensive - if so I'll
skip the idea of going for rechargeble batteries.

good old eveready also has a Rs700 product. i use it for my digital walkman which as you know consumes very less power. it has been working fine so far. but the battery charge won't last for cameras i guess. i also happen to own that Sony charger esteem_lover mentioned.. but i guess it was a lemon as it never really worked the way it was supposed to.

i use rechargeable batteries because i feel guilty whenever I see dead duracells in my house. rechargeable batteries are somewhat better on the environment. i hope!

I got a charger free with my cam, dont know how much it costs but yes got 4 AA 2500mAH batteries free. Guess most of them cost about 1-1.5 k. They work fine for me, and they last pretty long with my kinda usage (that is using the zoom, lcd etc)

I have used eveready too, but the batteries are just 700mAH which is not adequate for a digicam.

@carboy, 2.2k includes 4 2500mAH AA size sony rechargeable batteries too. How long does a duracell last on a digicam ?

On rediff shopping, I saw several for 200-400 Rs.
Ni-Cd Multi-Cell Charger (Free 4 Sanyo AA Rechargable Batteries) gifts in india at rediff shopping

Are these not good? This mentions Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries.
Are these the right ones to use for digital cameras.

It lasts a long time for me :-)
I take pictures few couple of times a year. Each time, I take maybe
5-10 pictures at time. My last duracell (Rs. 50 for 2) lasted more than
a year for me, I think.
So it would take me 45 years to break even on the cost of the
charger, ignoring the cost of charging (i.e. electricity).

Upto 500Rs for a charger cum batteries would work for me, that too,
only because I have this other gadget which I would use more
frequently, but still not enough to warrant 2200 Rs.

I guess that explains it. My usage is very different from yours.

Rechargeable batteries need constant discharge/recharge cycles. They won't be useful for your usage pattern - irrespective of the economics. I thought heavy usage when you mentioned camera ;-)

Read my first post again. This isn't for my digital camera, mainly. There
is another gadget which I will use more frequently, but still not more
than once a month or so for which I need rechargeable batteries.
However, I use up one pair of duracell fully during that one use.

I would suggest this brand called Chameleon.
They're a specialist battery brand and absolute VFM.

Battery charger and prices

here are basic comparisons with price
Battery Current Price Chargeable(times)
1. Normal AA 500mA Rs7/per N
2. Alkaline AA 500mA Rs25/per N
3. Eveready AA 500mA ~Rs175/4 Y ( 50 times)
4. Ni-Cd (?Any? AA) 700mA ~Rs700/4 Y ( 100 times)
5. Ni-MH (Sony AA) 1700mA ~Rs880/4 Y ( 1000 times)
2500mA ~ ??

3,4,5 - prices include charger with place for AAA too. And these have specific chargers and charging time( specially 3 & 4).

Memory effect - 3 ,4

Recommended - 5 (Sony)

now make your mind. I use Ni-MH for my worldband radio. Sony is best

The prices you say differ from what some others in the thread said
- i.e. Sony for Rs 2200.

Where can I get a Sony NiMh for 880?
