I gave a quick glance over. Nice linky. Is it applicable to Nikon DSLR newbies too?;)

The 2nd link - Photo.net - is not canon centric. Nikon, Sony, Pentax are also addressed.

Olympus just reclaimed the Superzoom title: Olympus SP-570 UZ: Digital Photography Review

Whopping 20x optical zoom, but it is the wide end that surprised me, a delicious 26mm. With a 1.7 TC it can go to 884mm. It all looks great on paper, I would be surprised if it performed well. The recent superzooms (560,550, etc) from Olympus were just so-so. But then these cameras are like draggers, don't expect much except superrrr zoooooom.:)

Mine is Panasonic TZ1 - 5 MP with 10x Optical zoom in a smallish size...bought it from Costco to test it out, and the picture quality made me keep it forever :)

Now thinking of giving it away for some price...as I think i have got photographically mature enough to desire Nikon D40! [:D]

Maverick, i think Nikon D40 is a wise choice. But, if cash isnt a problem, i'd rather suggest you go for the higher pixel version ( D40X) as its only 6-7K additional, you won't regret your decision.

I think it would be 32K with all accessories in Bangalore. There would a slight difference elsewhere but rather stick to your local city for easy repairs/servicing etc.

I am looking at a Digital SLR and have to choose between an Olympus, Nikon and Canon. Following are the Olympus and Nikon that I have shortlisted

I haven't got any ideas on Canon's. Which of the above two would you choose. Budget is around $600 - $700.

Currently E-510 is the most VFM and gives most bang for the buck.

But, hold on to your horses. The PMA08 is around the corner and lots of new dSLRs will be announced in the next 10 days, Pentax just announced two more. I believe Canon might unleash something interesting to leap frog over the current entry level leaders you have mentioned.

Holy Cow! That news came out within an hour of my prediction. Since 400D was already long in the tooth compared to competition, besides they lost their dSLR sales leadership to Nikon, so I figured Canon will pull something out.

I see Canon finally gets spot-metering into a entry level model, that was sorely missing for so long. And 14 bit raw, that's nice. Now even Canon offers LV in an entry level model, joining Olympus. How long will Nikon, Sony and Pentax hold out?

Canon has made a impressive range of usage oriented improvements and refinements on the 450D.

Twelve Megapixel CMOS Sensor, 3.0" LCD monitor, Live View with both AF Modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, Spot Metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps Continuous Shooting, a larger Viewfinder, SD/SDHC Storage and a new higher capacity Battery.

That's really a good new, because EOS 400D price will drop significantly.

For those who plan to purchase EOS 400D, please wait for couple of month so can save money.

You mean D3? D300 is already below 2K and is not FF.
