Rudra for a bag I am torn between using

a LowePro Off Road Lowepro - Off Road
or Off Trail 2
Lowepro - Off Trail 2

or a Tamrac Modular Accessory system which means I have to buy the body/lens case (515), each lens case (2 x 5378), 2 flash cases (2 x 5384) and filter case (5388) seperately but i like the idea of only carrying as much as as you need to.
Tamrac - Modular Accessory System
Tamrac - Model 515 Compact Zoom Pak

You should get a Nikon or Canon in that range in Bombay.

consider the Canon 350D with the 18-55 lens
Canon EOS 350D Digital SLR Camera - 8 Megapixel
CANON Digital Camera & Video Camera Prices
however if you can find a good condition used 17-85/3.5-4.5 lens it is a nicer lens.

JJ mehta is expensive so you can get the 350D kit for under 25K elsewhere.

How is your dads eyesight. I own a 350D and I think I have very good night vision. Even then I am very frustrated with the dim viewfinder of the Canon. The D50 from nikon which I briefly used had a brighter Viewfinder.
I don't know how much improved is the 400D viewfinder. That will cost you 28K with the kit lens.

Yeah! its for the beginnners and not going into those exceptions and nitty gritties of the chips and sensors.

Its aimed for P&S cameras and not the professional ones.

It is not nearly necessary that 8mp resolution will always get you a better picture than a 6mp. Many a times the manufacturer takes the same sensor which was sporting the 6mp resolution in the last year's model and come out with an "upgrade" that gets you 8mp. However as the pixel count goes up on the same sized sensor it crams up the chip so badly that you may start seeing some color bleeding, noise problems etc.

Thanks a lot @Rudra Sen, navin and tsk1979 for your reply guys. Will have a look between 350D and 400D. Dont mind spending a tad bit more, if i get a better camera. Thanks a lot for the links Navin, gave me a rough camera pricing. Will surely post in which camera I opted for. Thanks for the info.

Canon India is offering 350D at Rs.28995 with 1GB card. Is it a good buy as compared to the Nikon D40? I thought its wise to invest in SLR than ultra zoom models which I was after.

Will I miss something on the Canon 350D than I may get on the Nikon D40?

Canon 350D with canon india warranty is available for about 26K here in Hyderabad. But, it makes sense to buy a slightly higher version say a 400D or Nikon D40X for about 4-5K more. And, Canon, indeed has a dim LCD screen.

Btw guys, i finally got myself my first DSLR Nikon D40X a couple of days back and fiddling with it since then. I got a query, in playback mode, the overexposed areas are highlighted and keeps blinking, whats with it? I find it irritating:). And, the image edit in the camera option is just awesome!!!

A very wise decision. A DSLR is anyday better if you take things that you do seriously. And that includes photography. A DSLR can also act as a P&S if you so wish but then as you will progress you will find that a DSLR presents infinitesimally more options than a P&S camera. Yes, you do get a lot of bells and whistles with a P&S (foldable back screen, face detection and such crazy stuff) but when it comes to pure unadulterated photography under any condition only a DSLR can help you out.

Between the 350D and D40, the 350D has lot many more features than the comparable D40. I won't compile them here (there are lot of sites which will give you those details). However, out of the box, with their respective kit lenses the D40 always gives you much better pics than the 350D. Also, my personal take is that the Canon lenses are always costlier than the similar Nikon lenses.

When was that  . Last I used a P&S was over a year back.

Thanks Zappo. From speaking to the dealers, I have a notion that the 350D may be phased out shortly. But that wont affect me as the 350D will be enough for my needs for atleast 3-4 years of serious amatuer photography.

And yes, Canon and even Nikkor lens are expensive for a person with my kind of interest. Will consider a Tamron telephoto lens once I get a hang of using the cam.

Thats definitely your call... but I personally like the Nikon D40s directly-out-of-the-box performance much more than that of the 350D. By the way, Nikon D40 is cheaper than the 350D as well.

Also, I think all-round performance wise the Sigma telephoto (18-200mm) is better than the comparable Tamron. Of course thats my view again.

EDIT: I do not think the 350D is going to go anywhere in a hurry. Not as long as the Rs.10000+ difference between the prices of 350D and 400D remains.

Congrats on your DSLR purchase. I too bought a D40 with 18-135mm lens couple of weeks ago. If you dont want to see the overexposed areas then just press up/down on the 4 way selector, the overexposed areas will not be highlighted.
