mugen_power your best bet would be the Nikkor 55-200mm VR,brilliant lens and good VFM. Think it sells at between 10-12k in India.
Your kit lens already covers 18-55mm,so ideally you need to look beyond 55mm.
Keep your kit lens for regular shoots as in indoor and family pics.

Thanks rjs..

Why 55-200mm Why not the 18-200mm or 18-135 ?
Can't i get single lens for all purposes ?

If one lens would serve all purpose, why switch to dSLR? You would have been better off with a super zoom P&S. Usually it is wise to stick with zoom lenses that have less than 5x zoom. Any higher than, the lens quality would suffer. The 18-200mm sounds great, but at 11x it is no better than a P&S lens.

Statement holds true in general, but for one lens, the tamron 18-250. Photos are really good (and are now being branded as sony and pentax lens too.) With sony/pentax inbody IS, you have 18-250 IS DSLR.
It may not match the $1000 lenses, but will live upto the 55-200 standards for sure.

The 18-200mm with VR is a wonderful lens and is expensive too. Sells at about 36k here in India.
If you buy the 18-200mm lens, then your 18-55mm kit lens would become stale.

Also please drop the idea of a single lens solution. I was under the same impression and finally dropped the idea since there is no fun in shooting witout changing lenses.

Mugen Power read thru these articles :

1 : Nikon 55-200mm VR

2 : Nikon D40 Recommendations

Lens Suggestions

You're going to get the 18-55mm with the D40, which is great because it's a great lens. It ought to be all most people ever need. If you want a tele lens, try the new inexpensive and lightweight 55-200mm VR. It's perfectly matched to the D40.

I love my 18-200mm VR, but it costs three or four times as much as the 55-200mm VR. The biggest reason to get the 18-200mm VR instead of the 55-200mm VR is not to have to swap lenses to get from one end of the range to the other, or to have instant manual focus override. Optically they ought to be the same and the 18-200mm VR weighs more than either of the others. Any of these are great choices.

Try using Imagicon..works great..you can use it batch converting as well..

Try GIMP.
Its free.
I have used other things like Irfanview etc., but was never satisfied by the resized image quality.
With Imagemagick or GIMP I am pretty happy with the resized images quality.
