Will pick up a lens on my next visit to US.

Before buying from any tom dick or harry, please refer to resellerratings.com
Low price digital is just a search engine which will give you store names.
After you select a store search from the ratings to see customer feedback.
There are many stores like usacamera etc., who sell at 100$ below the reputed retailers. but swindle you by sending cameras without chargers etc., etc.,

Not even thinking about it. I have better lenses, so no kit lens is needed. Now the E-510 body is available on Amazon for:
That's a crazy price, it happened after E-3 was announced.

The E-3 is not launched in India yet, but it will be in 15 days with cost around 75K, grey price will hover around 68-70K. If I am ready to pay some advance they guarantee getting it from Singapore in a weeks time for around 70K

That's like US$1923 as opposed to 1699 list price. Still thinking about when...

If uou bargain you can get it for 70K with 2 years warranty from Oly india.

The best site is froogle.google.com
Find your store, and then check resellerratings.com

Man, that's a lot of money to shell out just for an upgrade. :-(

If the E-510 had bigger OVF, all cross-type AF (very fast) and articulating LCD, it would have been a no-brainer.

Am yet to get my camera, Sathya. The thanksgiving fever is catching up big time and orders will keep flowing in. I am expecting mine in a couple of days. Will post my review once I have it in my hands.

A pertinent question that anybody will raise if a product is sold at a lesser price. The key lies in doing a lot of research before you buy. There are a whole bunch of customer reviews posted for each of the vendors. Most of them offer a 1 year US warranty with option to purchase an extended warranty. I bought a Canon powershot SD 700 more than a year back and at a very good price. The camera is flawless and is working fabulously till date. The only thing I noticed was that the camera was a "Japanese make" and the naming convention differed from the US version. Other than that, everything else was the same. In fact am glad that I have a camera that was made in Japan than in the US or any other place. No offense here though.

You have an option of returing the goods if they are not upto your standards and your money is refunded (minus shipping, of course). So, IMO, if you have done your homework right then you can get a pretty decent deal.

If that was the case then who will buy the E-3
If you want all those features at a lesser price, there is a camera called the 40D :uncontrol

I almost settled for a Canon 40D, 17-55/2.8 IS, 70-300/4-5.6 IS. I find the 17mm on a 1.6 crop (28mm) still too wide (I need 24mm in FF to cover me). Then I wondered if I should wait for Canon to produce the IS version of their 24-70/2.8 and then get a FF DSLR but given FF DSLR prices I dont see that becoming affordable for 2 years or so. For a moment, out of desperation, I even speculated about getting an older Sony R1 (it's sensor is about the size of the 40D, bigger than the E3 and a bit smaller than the Nikon D300) but could not find one locally.

Now I am seriously considering a E3, 12-60 SWD and 50-200 SWD. Samurai any idea of the price of such a system?

BTW what are the advantages and disadvantages of haveing IS built into the body vs the lens?

Navin, What was the best quote you had for the 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM?

Will a tripod of this size be able to hold a DSLR properly?

I am confused here. Last month i was at the Olympus authorized dealer in Hyderabad (Shetala) The price of 510 with double kit lens with bill and international warranty is around 41000 and that sounded very close to US price too. I remember the dealer saying the mrp on the box is 50K+. Link to the dealer site is Shetala Cameras

C'mon, it doesn't have body IS, no articulating LCD and I need to rebuild my lens collection. It will be more expensive for me.

That would be a dream system. The E3 is $1700, the 12-60mm is $1000 and 50-200mm (available in Jan08) is $1200. This is supposed to be the fastest AF system in the world, people who have tried them report getting instanteneous lock even in dim indoor lights.

When the IS system built into the lens, it is optimised for that lens, hence it is said to be better. But E3 supposedly has done some breakthrough in body IS technology, they are claiming 5 stop advantage. The initial buyers (in dpreview forum) are simply stunned by the IS advantage, the link I gave before was shot entirely handheld in high ISOs. I can't give you first hand report since I too haven't used it yet. Check out the Olympus section in dpreview forum, they are full of first hand reports from new E3 owners.

You need a more solid and heavy tripod to support a dSLR. At least aim for 4Kg or above, it will be mentioned in the tripod specs.

You may want to consider a Canon 10-22 USM f3.5-4.5 AFS lens. (effective focal length 16-35 mm). If necessary, you can save money on the body by buying 400D instead of 40D and use the money towards the lens.

I had (still have) a EOS ELAN film camera with 28-105 mm USM lens. When I bought the 300D body about 4 years ago, the lens became 45-160 mm lens and I didn't have wide angle capability. When the Canon AFS 10-22 mm USM lens was announced a few years back, I bought it though the price was steep ($700). I am quite happy with it. At that time I was worried that the lens cannot be used when full frame cameras became 'affordable'. At that time it probably cost $6000 or more --- now full frame 5D is available for $2200 and in a year or two should be available for under $1500. But by that time I would have taken enough shots with the 10-22 to justify the cost. If you want to check out the quality of the pictures I can point you to some of the pictures I have taken with it. Though my canon 300d is probably worth less than half what I paid for it, the price of the 10-22 mm lens now is only about $60 less than what I paid for it.

Regarding IS in body vs lens, there is some info at The Online Photographer: More on In-Camera vs. In-Lens Image Stabilization
