Entry level costs that much? which DSLR are you talking about? I doubt if Nikon D40 or Canon 350D would cost that much!
with a 70-300 lens along with the kit an entry level DSLR will push 700$. But that will also mean that you can take sharp pics at ISO 1600. with the compact cams, the best you can do is ISO400 and even that is pretty noise.
As for IS, lets say at full zoom end IS gives you a 2 stop advantage.
DSLR ISO 1600 = Compact ISO 200
So you have a 3 stop advantage if you use a DSLR even without an IS lens. this negates the IS benefits of a compact cam.

Currently confused between the S5 IS and DSC H7
DSC H7
- Nah! Don't like the colour/high ISO etc of Sony
S5 IS
- Better than H7...also more 'professional' of the two
I am a bit inclined towards Sony because my current point and shoot digicam is by Sony and I love it!! Well...point and shoot is a completely diffrent category!
Also I love the performance of my Sony's Li-ion batteries. Still after almost 4 years, they last for almost 250-300 photos
I am not sure about the performance of AA NiMh batteries.
Also, reviews say that there is not much difference between S3 IS and S5 IS apart from higher resolution and DIGIC III processor. So is the S5 IS really worth extra cash? Yes! A canon is a canon! ALso companies like Sony often offer well rounded, novice friendly, all sundry feature thrown-in tyoe stuff. Its thier business philosophy! However a specialist manufacturer like canon or nikon will always offer more accurate, proffesionally aligned stuff..its just a diffrent business philosophy! Anywaz..that was my 2 cents! |
Also do chek out Fujifilm FinePix S8000 fd. The S series is often overlooked, but Fuji makes some real sturdy and interesting cameras!

I would suggest you go for the Sony H7 unless you are too used to the Canon's menu and features or are a diehard Canon freak.
I had this tough decision between H9 and S5IS. I just didnt want pay so much for a P&S camera and plunged for a canon DSLR.:D
I hear Olympus E-3 is now freely available in most countries including USA. Many new owners are going gaga. Now, I have no access to any Olympus retail shop. Can somebody swing by your neighbourhood Olympus retail store and see whether it is available in India and check it out personally?please: Thanks in advance.:D
I am going to CP in Delhi in saturday, I will swing by at Palika Bazaar exclusive Olympus showroom

That's great, I hope they have it.:)
Edit: Also checkout if they have the new 70-300mm or any of the SWDs yet.
As I have decided to buy S5IS in grey market at chennai fellow Bhpians pls guide me the best price, points i should take into note while buying and also the accesories that come along with it & any other important thing,as i am new to the grey market trade, thanks bye.
Be very careful Sathyaprakash espicially in Chennai, these guys in the grey market will fleece you. A digi camera in every sense has to be treated more like an investment for life and so please be careful. Ideally the accesories would be a leather case, memory card and possibly a tripod - if you are lucky. If you are looking at Grey market, don't give more than 18K
Finally, its time for me to say that I have ordered my S5 IS. It should be reaching me in the next few days and I coughed up $302 for the same !
rr-zen,
Which website gave you canon S5IS for $302?
I am not getting anywhere less than $330.

The E510 2 lens kit costs around 54K, if you want grey its around 50K.
The E-3 is not launched in India yet, but it will be in 15 days with cost around 75K, grey price will hover around 68-70K. If I am ready to pay some advance they guarantee getting it from Singapore in a weeks time for around 70K
That said the exclusive showroom is a joke. A tiny shop with lots of olympus signboards and a few camera. Maybe they have a warehouse nearby, and display less stuff at shop.
Oly should learn from Canon and Sony about what a showroom looks like.
I can pick up a Canon/Sony camera for zero interest EMI, but for oly I have to shell out the moolah.
