Since he will be using it on basic process any off the two would be good. But E4500 would be better one.

Need help in shortlisting a Graphics Card

I am looking at replacing my graphics card on my current Dell Dimension 8400 desktop. This currently has a 3.0 GHz P4 CPU with 1.5 GB of system memory. Presently I have a Radeon 300 SE graphics card (128 MB VRAM).

I was thinking of shifting to a Diamond ATI HD2600XT Graphics card. Do let me know if this is a good choice. My system has a 350 watts SMPS and I have a 24" Wide Screen LCD display. I am not really into gaming but do play around with High Definition Videos.

Laptop for dad

My dad is looking to buy a PC for home needs (internet, word processing and occational gaming by my nephew during vacations). He was looking for a desktop initially. The price from HCL for standard config was in the range of 25k. I suggested him to buy a laptop (a low end one) and add a USB keyboard for my nephew.

Could you please suggest which brand will be better (in low end segment)? Acer or Compaq. I guess Compaq will win. But considering the fact that he is a beginner to PCs will Acer be also Ok? Any suggestion for good models

Are unbranded laptops available? Mainly looking at branded as my dad might need support as he is new to PCs.

Help needed for buying home PC

Ok tech guys, need your expertise. I am looking at buying a home PC - I junked the HP machine I had because of chronic BAD service in Gurgaon, from the AD. I have vowed not to ever buy any product from HP/Compaq. (if you are working in HP/Compaq show this note to your CEO). My requirements are basic - all Windows applications like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Email, music downloads, a good quality CD burner a good sound card and reasonable graphics. I also use Skype for chatting with friends overseas. I want a flat screen monitor (LCD?) not one of those ancient boxes.
I was sold on the Mac which comes loaded with Windows and their own OS but the dealer would not extend any support if Windows malfunctioned. SO thats out.
Please suggest best choices - budget is not a constraint I want something that is robust.

Also please suggest a LEGAL site from where I can download pop/rock/blues (preferably 320kb format). I used to do it from Allofmp3.com until I found it was shut down because it never passed on the money to the copyright holders.

Thanks in advance. Bomi.

Buy the MAC. If windows malfunctions, you can reinstall it. Take backups and everything should be fine.

Look at Dell machines. They are of good quality & their service is top-notch. They'll come to your place next day whenever you have a problem.

even if the sky is the limit, do post the ballpark of the figure you're planning to spend. your requirements could be satisfied by a PC for anywhere from 25k upwards

Thanks Iraghava. I had contemplated Dell but hesitated because they do only mail order and I had doubts about their service capability. Now that you endorse their AS* , I will venture forth. Bomi.

I can give an idea.

Just before sometime, I had assembled a PC for my friend.

Here is what I have to say:
Processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Rs. 9800
Motherboard: Intel Original G33 chipset motherborad: Rs. 5600

Cabinet: iBall iBenz ( With 400w SMPS ) RS 1700
RAM: 2 X 1GB DDR 2, 667MHZ , Transcend. RS 2000
Hard Disc : Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA RS.2700
Optical Drive: LG 20X DVD Writer wth Secure Disc: Rs 1200
Keyboard and Mouse: Logitech Combo Rs 850.
Speakers: Creative SBS 245 Rs. 500.
Graphics Card: 8600 RS 6000

So it works out to RS. 30,350.

Procesor option 1 : E8400 ( i.e. Penryn, 45nm ) that will cost you around Rs 9000. So the entire set up will be Rs. 29550

Processor option 2 : You can also try E6700 ( I consider this to be ideal for you). RS. 7800.
Total : 28, 750.

Dont go for ASUS. It uses dual layer PCB, so there are more chances of the motherboard getting weared out quickly. The RMA or replacement is also not very fast.

Now with the recent april 20 price cut, Q6600 ( intel Quad core, 2.4 GHz, 1066 FSB.) is costing around 9800. I would suggest you go for Penryn, as it is modern, more power effecient. I dont see any point going for quad core. The real need for quadcore will be by 2010/2011, and at that time you can upgrade as the G33 chipset motherboard from intel is Quad Ready.

Basically, I am a student of BCA( Bachelor in Computer Application ) in MSU, Vadodara. We have to use very heavy softwares like Oracle 10, etc that are basically meant for servers. I have seen that Intel works with amazing stability with heavy loads.

The PC i had assembled for my friend uses Windows Vista Business edition which he won in a competetion. it is working like a dream.

Dont go for AMD as it has severe overheating problems even in Brisbane core. I am having AMD X2 5000+ ( not black edition ), 2 gB Dynet Ram, 7300gT point-of-view graphics card ( with only passive cooling so temperature ranges from 80-90 deg. celcius for this card ) ,msi K9n Neo V3 560 chipset.
This pc overheats so much that the processor temperature is 63-38 degre with moderte load.

So intel is the best or rather, the only sensible option.
