Thanks for the reply.
I am skeptical about the iPhone 4 for those reception problems. Yes, i meant the 3GS. 3GS is not good enough? And both the 3GS and 4 can be used in India with any GSM operator? |
iPhone 4 is clearly a step up from 3GS, in terms of specs and features. If I were to buy an iPhone today, it would be the new one, not 3GS, unless someone gives it for free :)
Well, about the reception problems, it seems that the problem exists in 3GS too.
An iPhone Lover’s Take On The iPhone 4
PS: that review is from a self proclaimed iphone fan boy
If you are getting an official unlocked phone, it should work with any operator.
Consumers Reports has said that it is not recommending the Iphone 4 due to its antenna reception issues.
Maybe Apple should do something about this. Its clearly a design flaw.
^^ last i heard is that they are planning to fix the reception issue by releasing IOS 4.01. Not really sure how they will manage to fix a hardware problem with a software :)

So i installed OS4 on my 3GS yesterday. Apart from all the listed features, i really liked the following two:
1. Now i have ITunes on my phone
2. The camera's shutter has become super quick!
Cheers

Apparently, as per some researchers and testers, the problem won't go away. only the perception of iphone 4 users will change.
here is the linky:
Why Apple's iPhone 4 Update Won't Fix Your Reception Problem
i am terribly disappointed, i am getting an upgrade in September and this came up. i am not too sure if i will still opt for it. on top of that ATT also changed data plans.
Guys! is it worth buying an iphone 3gs, now in India?
considering that it is costing me 35000 bucks with bill.

Why would you want to be stuck with a 3GS when the iPhone4 is here. Def not worth 35k !

Get a 3GS instead of iPhone4. Its definitely worth it. iPhone4 has so many issues, call dropping, death grip... you have to buy a freakish looking bumper on top of your Rs65000 phone! Totally not worth the hype.
3GS is stable. You can get plenty on eBay.in too.
I would say, boycott the iPhone4. Imagine having this in your tight pocket or a stuffed bag and you don't get any calls because the bars go down? They say the drop is caused due to some insulation on the antennae. Don't see how software Patches is going to help.
Guys waiting on iPhone3GS 5.12.01 new firmware unlock - This could be the solution.
Here we are looking for model numbers and officially supported network carriers... and this guy activates an iPhone with a simple phonebook sim card.

I ordered one from Ebay :D Lets see how that goes.
BTW, I tried 02 activated sim card on my iPhone, it did not work.
well it is 100% correct that only user's perception will change.
user associates number of bars with quality of reception and for ages apple was cashing on this by showing more bars then rivals.
With iPhone4 antenna design the bars were still more when they should have dipped when capacitance offered by hand attenuates the radio signal.
In other words Steve should have said we tried cheating you by showing more bars but that did not work out due to another problem so we are rolling back and will give correct picture :-)

Sorry dude, mine is a factory unlocked one. All i did was plugged it in and fired up iTunes. Had to make some room on the C Drive thanks to crappy Vista :Frustrati but thats another story.
Regarding reception, i have noticed that now the bars go down significantly even on my 3GS running OS4. But the call quality has not changed.

Hi Amitoj, How much did you pay? where did you buy it from?
Thanks. -Rishi
Well - for all those concerned about the iPhone 4 reception issues, there is some good news.
If you are an existing iphone user - you can enter *3001#12345#* to activate Field Test Mode. Here you can see the actual -db signal strength. Also If your iPhone is jailbroken, you can get sbsettings and go to more+extras then toggle 'Numeric GSM'. All phones have a Field test option (google it!) which will allow you to check the numeric signal measure.
-51db is the best possible signal with 5 bars.
-121db is worst possible with less than 1 bar. BUT still reasonably good for calls + data!
The iphone 4 loses a maximum of 24 -db with the death grip.
I've been driving around for the last 10 days in and around Delhi/NCR - the worst signal I got was -81db in Sainik Farms. So, even with a worst case drop of -24db, I will still be more than ok for almost all the places I go to frequently in Delhi. I haz iPhone4 early August!
