Correct!

I just checked and found that the iPhone no longer comes with dock and power adapter, so thats how the price is coming down.

What's missing?

Unfortunately, we hoped for an even larger bundle of features in this round. Apple still leaves multimedia messaging out of the mix along with voice dialing and video recording. We still don't understand why Apple can't include these basic features, many found in even the cheapest and simplest cell phones. We were also hoping for a landscape keyboard, the capability to cut and paste, Flash support for the Safari Web browser, expanded memory, and additional Bluetooth profiles. Apple, you left us hanging in a big way. It's also disappointing to hear that the dock is now sold separately for $49, but we suppose that helped cut the price. No, you don't need the dock, but it's nice to have. Even the power adapter and the SIM card removal tool that now come in the box won't make up for its loss.

I think i'll be happy to just update the firmware to 2.0 which should give me allot more features!

Any idea when is Apple launching the 2.0 firmware for the 1st gen iPhone?

Software update (Ver 2 for Ist gen) gonna be out in July. Apple has announced the price to be kept under the 200 and 300$ limit world wide ;)

India is in the second list of 48 countries where release is planned, so Sept - Oct is a possibility. As steer mentioned now it has become worthy of a try for Business Users, i think am going for it.

Only issue is the revised tie up plans from the telecom providers which will make it a pain to source the phone easy from US of A. Lets wait and watch. Maybe will have to try how it works out to get it from UK.

Even if it is around $300 in India once it is launched, its below 15K and IMHO its gonna give its competitors a run for their money.

Twice as fast, Half the price, network independent, No unlocking required :D
AGPS included.

Launches on 11th July in lot of countries (India launch still not defined), 200 USD for 8GB. Works on any network, 3G speed, can connect to ms exchange etc. No Unlocking issue.
Two models 8GB and 16GB.

Where did you find that it is network independent (unlocked)?
BTW there are other threads where iPhone 3G is being discussed.

Network Independent?????:Shockked:

Source???

It looks like they took an amazing device and made it significantly better. If the battery life is as good as they claim, we think this will steamroll the competition in the enterprise space. And even if it doesn't, at $199 it's going to be extremely hard for people to resist
So here you go, the 22 countries scheduled to go live with the iPhone 3G on July 11th:

$199 for 8G and $299 for the 16GB model... in the US at least and with a 2-year contract. The remaining 48 countries listed after the break will get theirs "later this year."

Update:
Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry. More details here.

UPDATE:

Just read that
iPhone 3G purchase and activation will be in-store only

Ohh shucks if that happens what will happen to us all !!!:Frustrati

After adding Indian Govt taxes, it will around 18K~20K.
But people in India pay s.h.i.t money to mobiles - as much as one month's salary. No surprise if it sells.

i just hope they dont sell this for 25ooo for 8gb since india sells everything overpriced.

Not sure how much this is true, however they would be shipping unlocked sets to Asia, so no cracking open. Read this on Cnet, Unwired, and some other places...

The announcement talked about the mandatory AT&T subscription. The service provider and Apple are taking on some of the subsidy to get the price down, and therefore is not network independent i.e it is locked. IF it were not, why would anyone subscribe to AT&T?

Just cleaned up this thread.
