Wrong..... even the 8GB iPOD nano cost more than that here... It just isnt possible. Airtel isnt gonna give you an subsidies like AT&T and if it does, be ready for a monthly plan of atleast a thousand rupees minimum for 2 years. |

What you heard was correct!! I listened in to the keynote live and Job said that they were gonna price the phone at $199 worldwide. I dont know what exchange rate they will use, though.
ps: That was for the 8Gb iPhone |
Yes I agree. No way is it possible that the iPhone will be priced under INR 10k in India. It will be too 'low' priced for its appeal and risks of losing its niche identity. I am guessing it will be around INR 15-18k

I dont chat usually but my Sister-in-law needs it on every weekend. Emails and browsing works great for me.
This weekend i did not realize this when she asked me for it, simply asked her to go to meebo and log in lol: |

iphone installation process Note from Mod - Please read though your post and correct typos before posting.
Apple is not niche. Apple want to price it at $199. But the custom duty & other taxes will push it to $300 in India. But Apple can still price it at $199 in India, if they set up a local manufacturing unit here in India.

Now that the excitment about the supposed "$199" a.k.a "Rs.10K" 3G iphone has subdued a bit, I thought that I would input my 2 cents here.
1) The $199 price is subsidized due to a 2 year contract with AT&T.
2) You can buy the phone either at an AT&T or Apple Store but have to sign the dotted line stating that you agree to a 2 year contract.
So effectivley getting locked phones (And subsequently unlocking them) from the US will be very difficult because most folks who buy it under the AT&T plan will have to pay significant penalties for terminating their contract.
Other than getting the phone directly in India when it is launched later this year, you will be able to pick up an unsubsidized phone without a contract in July from Europe.
Here is the bummer: €499 for the 8GB and €569 for the 16GB. So you would look to spend about Rs. 26K at the minimum if you want the phone on July 11th.
Unsubsidized iPhone 3G priced at ?499/?569 in Europe - Engadget
P.S. This is simply speculative, but I would expect Vodafone and Airtel to launch the iphone at the 25K - 30K mark since I do not think GSM operators in India have contracts and subsidies (I may be incorrect, though.). Also, Apple does have more of an upmarket image in India and I think their prcing will be in lines with their current product lines so 25K makes even more sense when the iPod touch retails for 17.5K.

Make that Rs.30k - that Euros we're talking about, not Dollars. Big difference these days. That'll be Touch Pro or Samsung i900 for me, then.

Omnia means pure and this Samsung Omnia is pure drool stuff. I was eyeing the Touch Pro but when I saw the specs of Omnia, those plans were shelved. Now I am waiting for this to arrive.

Wow. You must feel quite strongly to make this your first post.
Lighten up, buddy. Its just a phone. Let others enjoy it. :D |
Oh yes sir, i do :)
First of all, most phones in "competition" to the iPhone use a technology that's even more advanced than the iPhone's tap screen, allowing you to actually feel the keys you press as you're pressing them! The technology is called "tactile response," and it allows you to do things like dial a phone number without staring at your screen. In fact, every other cellphone ever made has this technology, sometimes called "buttons." :D
Secondly, On an iPhone, you have to press an additional button that opens up an alternate keypad that will allow you to type numbers and punctuation. So typing something as simple as elipses (...) requires you to tap your finger 9 times.
Aside from these, there are many more reasons for me to feel strongly against it:-
*Can't do fundamental tasks like copy & paste text
*No Instant Messaging
*Can't Record Voice
*No Voice Dialing
*Resolution of 320x480 ...one of the lowest in its segment.
*Can't send MMS messages
*Can't Record Video
*Can't customize ringtones with your own mp3s
whew... also, storage is fixed at 4 or 8 GB(most other phones use 2GB or more hot-swappable mini SD cards, so thats virtually unlimited memory)..
Your phone is hostage to Apple(and/or partners) for new software updates because Apple won't allow everyone to develop applications for it.
You have to send your phone to Apple(and/or partnets) when the battery dies or some other minor issue and risk getting your phone lost, stolen, or damaged in transit.
And ofcourse, The Screen turns into a smudgy piece of **** after a few minutes of use....yeah, I can probably go on...
-----------
See, I don't have any problems with people buying the phone because they think it looks cool etc., Just like i have no problems with people installing spoilers on cars that rarely see above 100 kmph if its just for appearence... the problem is when people go on and on about non existent/unimpressive features/performance(and improved "drag coefficients" from the spoilers).:uncontrol
This was a fun post ^__^
Another point against iPhone is the battery. My firnd always carries 2 charged batteries and changes them if the charge goes away. He can't do that in iPhone because the phone HAS TO be taken to authorized service center to open the battery :uncontrol!!! iPhone comes as a completely sealed unit :Shockked:

clap: Welcome Amien! A 'newbie' I have taken an instant liking to!
I too have been 'bitten' by the iPods earlier, in what can only be termed as 'a momentary lapse of reason'! I advise anyone that cares to listen, to steer clear of these highly dramatized products from Apple.
Completely agree with you guys - Amien and Anup. Have been saying this for years against apple products - but for the UI innovations, overhyped and overpriced.
Even though I recently contributed to gifting an iphone to my best-friend/roomie for his bday, I have been extremely happy with my LG viewty. Same goes with my 30/100/160gb archos portable video player/recorder over the crap ipods.
Apple is good at making drool and hype and cool UIs, but I would prefer state of the art usable technology with an ok-ok UI for the money I spend :)
Ok - the SMSD application fails to launch on my iphone. i installed it via the Installer. I am on version 1.1.4.
How to get it working ?
any clue, at what price the htc diamond is debuting at???
