The iPhone Thread
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadgets-computers-software/38465-iphone-thread-991.html)
Installed the iOS 16 public beta on my phone a month ago. Have received successive updates with public beta 5 currently on. Few observations that I love about the new update:
1. Lock screens are now awesome. Very customisable. Will appeal to a wide range of tastes. Uses AI to automatically select photos from your phone that would make a good wallpaper. My favourite is iOS using its edge detection algorithm to hide the clock behind the photo subject on the Lock Screen.
2. Photos app now has the ability to detect duplicates and merge them. Same with contacts. U can also pick a photo in the gallery, click on the subject and lift it clean off the background to be pasted onto any other app. The edge detection is so good!
3. Easier access to family sharing options
4. WiFi settings allow you to view the password and copy/share it with others. Something that Android has had for years.
5. Keyboard haptics. iPhones have the best haptic engines available.
6. ‘Scan text’ option is now directly available right after you take a screenshot. No need to add it to photos app to scan text. Super useful!
7. Even though it’s a beta build, I have been getting decent battery build. Only downside is certain banking apps/UPI apps crash on opening.
Has anyone else installed the beta version yet?

Yes running iOS 16 beta and iPad OS 16 beta as well. Trying it on a spare iPhone as I still don't have the courage to use it on my main 13 Pro.
This version is a major improvement and I have noticed the betas are super stable when it is released as a public beta. Earlier versions are only for iOS developers.
Bank apps generally don't support unreleased OS versions due to security issues. Used to happen on rooted Android phones too. Can't wait for September 7th. Final build will likely release along with the iPhone 14.

Not sure which Apple device you guys are using. I have an Iphone 12 mini, which already has smaller battery and not so great battery life. As this is my primary and only device, I do not install any beta versions of software. I had some queries wigth regards to ios 16 -
1. Any idea if the features that have been quoted by you are available on 12 series iphones?
2. While you guys did quote on battery life being ok, has it degraded in comparison to ios 15.x version?
3. I also read that ios 16 supports always on display. can anyone verify that.
4. how is the stability of messaging apps like whatsapp, telegram?
5. I also read that we can now see battery percentage captioned on the battery icon. Can you guys confirm if it works?

1. Though I don’t have an iPhone 12 running beta software, I don’t see any reason why you won’t get the same software experience, unless unsupported by hardware. Hardware change between the 12 and 13 series is minimal.
2. My battery life did initially suffer for the first 2 public beta OS builds. Was getting way lesser screen on time. But with successive builds, the battery life has gone back to iOS 15 levels. Battery health has dipped to 98% though. Mine is a 7 month old phone with heavy use. So this is expected.
3. Always-on display isn’t always about whether the screen is OLED or not. Battery/screen refresh rate is a concern. It is likely that Apple intends to introduce this feature on iPhone 14 models onwards with an OLED with a variable refresh rate (up to 1 hz) hence not affecting battery life. iPhone 13 and earlier are not equipped with variable refresh rates hence unlikely to get AOD.
4. Yea. It’s good.
5. Yes, battery percentage icon works:thumbs up
Guys, what's your views on iPhone SE 2022 vs 13 mini ?
Apart from some differences, I dont see a major reason to spend the extra 25-30k. One thing that does stand out is the screen size where the 13 mini (even 12 mini) is larger.
Not in a hurry, could get one only by Diwali time when there could be some discounts.
Currently have a 2017 SE.

Is this working with 12Mini? I too have the mini, currently on 15.5 with no option to display battery % on the icon.

Kindly note my observations listed in this post is only with reference to iOS16 public beta version 5 or later. iOS16 has not been released officially to the public so far. By the 2nd or 3rd week of September, the iPhone 12 mini too will have iOS16, and therefore the battery percentage option. So unless you install the public beta software, you will have to wait for a few more weeks for iOS16 features.

Yes, I intended to ask about the availability of this feature in iOS 16 only; but since the same was available for 12 but not mini even in the current versions, just wanted to be sure. :) Thanks!

I have 12 mini. Using dual sims in it.
I can confirm the following.
- Lock screen notifications are good and they look great.
- Battery perofrmance is not impacted. It appears, its slightly improved. I am on 16.0
- Battery percentage icon was not available in 16.0. I didnt fight looking for it, so not sure whether it was there in 16.0 or not.
I think, this 16.x beta is good. You can upgrade to it. If you dont like it, you can always delete the profile and go back to 15.x, so, why not try it?

Exactly in the same boat. With iphone 14 launch around the corner, if there is a sweet deal, I would replace my 1st gen SE with a 13 mini. Though SE 2022 seems to be a VFM buy, the form factor is pretty slippery. I have had an iphone 6 for few weeks (around 2018), but the curved edge is a big bummer and I went back to my 1st gen SE ever since. And 13 mini , inspite of being smaller than SE 2022, packs in more screen area and is as chunky/edgy to hold like the SE 1st gen.
One thing I am still fond of is the home button. But I guess we all have to let it go at some point :coldsweat
My primary phone is a S22 ultra and i have an iPhone 12 mini as my office or secondary mobile. Was surprised by the battery backup of the 12 mini! This is one area where samsung is lagging.
I still have 20% remaining after this!

My 12 Mini lasts 2 days (48 hours easily) with normal calling and browsing usage. It is mostly connected to wifi (& not mobile data) and runs only one physical SIM and probably that helps. Only thing I don't run on the mini is whatsapp as it runs on my other phone and I don't want 2 whatsapp(s). In that way, I am quite happy with my 12Mini.
However, one of my colleagues says she needs to keep her 12mini plugged in almost the entire day! Talk about contrast!:)

Battery % is not coming to the mini iPhones, be it 12 or 13 running iOS 16. Plenty of tech reviewers mentioning the same on YouTube.

Major differences apart from the larger 5.4” screen size vs 4.7” on the SE. 13 mini has 4gb ram, a much brighter screen (800 nits) vs the 600 nits on the SE, OLED display with much richer colours, an extra ultrawide camera lens, Face ID which is faster and more convenient than Touch ID, better battery life, A15 chip, cinematic mode, MagSafe charging, and finally Ceramic Shield which actually makes it much more resistant to drops on hard surfaces from significant heights.

Larger screen not a deal breaker since I dont do much with my phone. I dont even have my bank's apps or any finance related apps on it. No movies, games either. Definitely no office related stuff on it.
The brighter (and larger) screen + OLED display may still help to view pics I have taken.
Face ID - no plans to use this.
Following #1 above:
Will the extra Memory make a big difference ?
Battery life is not too different. I still charge my current SE once a day (Till the recent battery life drop). My typical daily screen time is less than 2 hours. May be higher on the days I use google maps when driving.
A15 bionic chip is also available on the SE 2022
Magsafe charging - is it that important ?
Ultrawide camera lens and the Ceramic coating look to be good things to have. I typically have had spigen cases with the run-of-the-mill screen protectors.
:)
So should I really spend the additional 25k is what I am thinking. I have used the SE for 5 years now. Body & screen are still in very good condition. Wonder if Apple will allow their phone to be easily usable in the coming years. The main reasons I am looking for a change is the 5 year ownership and cost of 4k to replace the battery on the current SE.

I too didn’t think much of Face ID but once you use it, it’s so lighting fast you’ll never go back trust me. Yes MagSafe is nice to have as it eliminates the physical scuffs left around the edges of the lighting port with the plastic tab on the charger cable.
I’m honestly the wrong person to ask as I find even the 13 pro max just about enough in terms of camera/battery/screen size/performance (Still can’t run Genshin Impact maxed out without overheating).
So I’d still recommend the 13 mini over the SE, the thick bezels just seem too outdated for 2022. Considering my 6S from 2015 is still getting software updates after 7+ years, the 13 series will be no exception, so you can easily keep it 5+ years. My 6S still runs like day 1 even today (even faster in fact), just change batteries every 3 years.
