does anybody else think memory card encryption (at least in HTC) is useless?
If the phone is stolen, one can easily connect a USB cable and extract all the files, even of the phone is locked. It should not allow a connection unless the phone is unlocked.

I am planning to buy a Nokia E5. Please let me know is there any minus points or disadvantages of this mobile. I am buying this phone for mainly
- Checking and sending mails both Yahoo and office mails.
- GPS as my navigator
- Chat thru G-Talk mostly. ( can I chat without wifi means can I chat while travelling).

Just go and check the user reviews in gsmareana. Lot of users have complained about freezing and restarting problem with this set. It is a good set with some good features on paper but quality and performance of those features, I am not very sure e.g camera is really bad. Its a 5 mp camera but without auto focus. It could not take a single usable pic when I tested it sometime back at nokia showroom. So, if camera is your need then this is not for your but otherwise for the needs you mentioned above it seems a good option.

The 'phone lock' is only meant to disable the User Interface (keypad, keyboard or touchscreen), not any other interface method to the device. If you encrypt the card contents, and someone connects to the device via USB, they would still need to answer the decryption challenge on the PC, right?

I have been using the E5 for over two months with loads of third party apps installed and NEVER has it frozen or restarted. It is extremely fast and truly VFM. Yes the cam is not upto the mark, but which 5mp phones take decent(?) pics? Not many.

I have never used HTC but well have you verified that the files are not actually encrypted ?
When phone is locked there is no reason to disallow the connection. Even if someone copies the encrypted files he need to decrypt them before use.
So I would call it useless only if encryption does not encrypt the files.
Currently I am using Nokia 6600. I am bored of using it since last one year. So, now I am planning to get a new Garmin model.
I am looking for a new mobile phone. I do not need any fancy features so have shortlisted these two. I want to know which is better among these two. I am really confused between these two. Thanks in advance.
Go for Nokia 5233. Its a Series 60 phone, has more internal memory plus supports 16GB extended compared to 8GB in C3 apart from big screen, better screen resolution and better hardware.
Its ok if you are comparing with C3, but otherwise Nokia 5233 are way behind the competition except for its nHD screen with 16M colors. Its 2 MP cam is perhaps the worst 2 MP cam I'v seen.

there is no challenge. the encryption is tied to the phone. you have the phone, you have the key. you hard reset the phone, your encrypted files are lost forever. If I had to copy the files form my PC to phone and then to another PC, there is no place I will have to provide any password, in fact, there is no password.

Not sure, I am getting mixed results now when I experiment. But in any case, if I was using it for data transfer as mentioned above, there should be some place where I need to provide a password.

Why don't you tell us your requirements, we may be able to suggest the best phone for you.
Instead of 5233, I would suggest 5230. For another 1K, you get GPS navigation along with memory card and car stand included in the sales package.
If you don't need GPS, the newly launched 5250 is a thinner and lighter option to 5233.

That does not explain what happens when a (so called encrypted) memory card is read via a card reader on a PC. There must be a declaration of some sort how this use case is handled. Even encrypted files in on-board memory (they are erased on a hard-reset) would follow the same logic. On a read from a PC, some sort of a challenge would be required to open such files.
What are you using (since you are talking of file transfer PC > mobile > another PC) to encrypt the file? Or are you talking of encryption on the mobile after receiving it from a PC? Possible, but it would be really strange behavior if the encryption is limited to opening on the mobile, equivalent of invisible ink for kids. Quite a travesty of security implementations!
Urgent-
A friend lost the phone and wants a new one.

Thanks.
Hello Team-BHPians,
Looking forward to your inputs on buying a new mobile, budget would be 10-15K.
Priorities will be given to:(in no specific order)
1. Battery life
2. Touch screen
3. 3G
4. WiFi
5. A decent camera with flash
6. A decent OS & UI without lags.
I was looking at the Samsung Wave 723 and it seems to tick all the boxes. But I want to know if there are better options in the market. I even tried out the 8500 wave used by one of my colleagues and it was impressive but for the price. I was almost sold out on that when I experienced the Samsung Jet (used for over 6 months) from another colleague.
There was some kind of a sound and disturbance when the phone's touch screen was being used. Hence I have become apprehensive of the touchscreen phones from Samsung; I know that it is not from the vibration feedback that is available on certain touchscreen phones hence I would like to know about the experience of using Samsung Touch screen phones from people using it here.
And whats the deal with Android OS? People here simply seem to be in awe of it in their mobiles:)
Currently sitting with a Nokia 6303i which is doing extremely well on battery and pics front. But the screen seems too small for browsing news/web pages.
