I have a very basic Question, Can I root my phone without an intention to install a custom rom? |
Even I had this 'doubt' in my mind few days back. To get my doubt answered, I rooted my LG Optimus One. The various apps like
AdFree, Root Call Blocker etc works perfectly on my phone after rooting. :D
YES, you can root your phone with/without the intention of installing a custom ROM.
I guess, this answers your query. :)
EDIT: Just noticed
Clevermax's reply.
Technocrat, you can delete my post, if necessary.
My purchase of two Samsung Galaxy S2s (pre-ordered through the xdadevelopers thread) has reached my home in Trivandrum. Whole family seems to be very impressed with the phones, specially with the Super Amoled plus display! Cost being Rs 29,400 * 2. Freebies mentioned with the deal have not reached, and are supposed to be sent only upon confirmation of payment (COD).
I will be getting the phone (One was for bro) tomorrow morning in hand! Super excited!
Anyone knows how/ where to purchase the adapter for connecting to USBs?
^^ rooting can be seen as administrator access to your phone. You get complete control over your phone. You can delete bloatware from manufacturer, install advanced-level apps, control hardware parameters (OC, UV, lcd density etc.), install themes, etc.
And anyhow most "custom" roms are nothing but stock roms with above mentioned changes. They don't really have different framework or APIs like few chosen custom roms. For example: cyanogenmod is built from grounds up using google's source code.
Thanks Guys,
I just found out that there is an easy temp root available for my phone. So I think I will try that out before going the Perm root way :)

Is there any way we can have a messenger similar to BBM in Android?
I want my clients to migrate from blackberry to android phones. The only thing coming in the way is BBM.
Any solution?
Thanks

Here you go :
LiveProfile - Android Market
I haven't tried this app. Thus, I'm not sure whether this serves your purpose.

I would suggest you try whatsapp. It is very good. It automatically checks for all whatsapp users within your phonebook and let you communicate with them. It's a cross platform app. You need no PIN, username etc.

Alright, I successfully rooted my phone with the help of above two links :)
Installed shoot me for taking screen shots. So what else can I do now :)
AdFree
Droidwall
Titanium Backup
Call recorder
The list of applications is endless. Search the market on "root" you'll see a lot of apps which need root. then see what you like

Hi rajanmehta,
thanks for the tip. I am going for this phone, just deliberating between letsbuy and flipkart. price on both is same, just letsbuy gives you an extra 1200 off with icicilb coupon. I just wanted to know how is letsbuy's service? Are they reliable? Also how can we be sure they'll ship a new unit and not a used one. Flipkart, i've read is quite reliable in that respect. Plus, they are here in Bangalore only, so I can drop by and pick up the unit myself.
I just wanted to know more about letsbuy before commiting 30k of my money. Are there any other people here who have done their cellphone shopping with letsbuy? Mouthshut seems to have some mixed reviews for it, but there can be trolls there so I wanted more genuine feedback. Thanks guys.

Which build of CM7 are you using? These are nightly builds and are experimental. CM7 build 12 seems to be stable enough. |

Which one is build 12? Please give a link? I don't see any such numbering for builds in the cyanogenmod site. |
Could you please help me find out which is this build #12? These are the global stats for CM mod.
Here's the
linky.
The maximum number of installs are in HTC Desire, about 55000.

I was in your shoes just yesterday. I was skeptical about placing an order with letsbuy. Even I read through those mouthshut reviews. Those reviews are mostly old ones which were written when the firm had just started it's operations. The latest reviews are 99% positive, one more thing I observed, most of the complaints about late delivery revolve around Samsung Galaxy SIIs, which have a great demand currently. And let me tell you one thing, almost everyone would goto mouthshut.com to write a review when they have a bitter experience, but it's not the same case when everything goes good, they just let it pass by.
I then checked T-Bhp (I came to know of letsbuy thru T-Bhp only), for any posts on letsbuy. Found few and all of them were telling good about letsbuy. (Digi-cam and mobile phone purchases) I then took the plunge and placed orders for 2 Nokia C6-01s. :) I got a confirmation SMS and e-mail from letsbuy with the order number within the next 10 seconds. So, take your call and go ahead.

A friend of mine did buy from Letsbuy, he got his SGS2 delivered in a week from order. Had no issues. Havent heard of issues from those who ordered from Flipkart as well. Prices are the same.

Havent checked them myself. The SGS2 isnt available anywhere in stores ?
I am using go sms pro for sms, and use a security lock for the sms, however the sms's can still be accessed in the default sms app. Is there a way to lock the default sms app as well. I am using a samsung galaxy s2.
